2 Pompeii holds an intense fascination for visitors today. Following the eruption of the Volcano Mount Vesuvius in the year 79 AD, Pompeii lay buried and forgotten for hundreds of years. The Town is high on the list of Wonders of the World and the excavations which began in the 18th Century are still being carried out today. Our guide will take you through some of the ancient streets of Pompeii where you can see Baths, Forums and Villas built by the prosperous Romans in the year 80 BC. Marvel at the fabulously preserved Frescoes which adorned the walls and floors of the Villas. Even if your interests do not lie in history, this is an archaeological site that cannot fail to impress. 3 Our journey takes us along the gorgeous coastal road through Castellammare di Stabia and out along the highway to Herculaneum. Herculaneum was destroyed along with Pompeii in 79 AD, and rediscovered in It was a residential town without Pompeii's commercial importance, surrounded by the villas of the wealthy Romans.When the catastrophe of 79 AD occurred Herculaneum was submerged under a torrent of mud and lava that hardened into a soft tufa (a kind of coarse rock) that preserved many of the timber features and household objects which can be seen today. A large portion of the old Herculaneum is still buried under the modern town and to this day, excavations are still being carried out to discover what treasures lie buried under the rock, to the extent that some families are being rehoused so work can continue. 4 Full Day Tour POMPEII & VESUVIUS( 8 h ) The itinerary is the same as Pompeii Half Day Tour, however after the visit we will move to Mount Vesuvius dominating the Bay of Naples. It is the only active volcano on the mainland of Europe. The slopes were once covered with vineyards and woods and provided an innocent looking backdrop for the bustling town below. The coach will take you to within metres of the top of Vesuvio and from here you can walk to the highest spot possible and admire the splendid panoramic views across the bay. From the blackened crater, a single plume of smoke arises, a reminder that the volcano is still active and only at rest for now. 5 Full Day Tour POMPEII & HERCULANEUM ( 8 h ) Depart Sorrento and travel to Castellammare di Stabia where we take the motorway and reach Herculaneum. It was once a residential coastal town, and it has been superbly preserved due to the fact that it was covered in Volcanic mud during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Your guide will give you the chance to view the town from above, so you can see the amazing extent of the ruins, before heading down and beginning the guided tour which should last about an hour. The buildings have been so well preserved that you can walk down the streets just as the Romans would have done over 2000 years ago! The tour takes in the House of the Argus, a grand place judging by its courtyard, which is dwarfed by the Casa dell'albergo across the street, initially thought to be a hotel, which covers a huge area. The frescoed floor of the House of Neptune, has a sparkling mosaic floor, as well as a portrait of the household owners and flower and vegetable mosaics. Along with the shops and gymnasium a fascinating tour of possibly one of the best preserved examples of a Roman residential town in the world. Following the guided tour you can enjoy some free time before departing for Pompeii. Housed in the magnificent Cathedral are the remains of the Patron Saint of both Amalfi and Scotland, Saint Andrew. 8 Visit the only active Volcano on Europe's mainland, that dominates the Bay of Naples. Drive up through the old original crater to approx.3000 feet above sea level, and then make the final 20 minute climb on foot up a path covered in volcanic gravel. Once at the top, you can walk halfway around the crater and take a look inside, and from this height, you can admire the view of the bay stretching out below. The downhill climb will take approx. 30 minutes. On your return to Sorrento a stop will be made at VicoEquense to visit the mineralogical museum where you can see approx. 230 varieties of Vesuvian Minerals as well as thousands of other examples from around the world. You may wish to visit Anacapri and the fabulous villa of Dr. Axel Munthe, a Swedish doctor whose best selling book "Story of San Michele" tells of his time on Capri. You can enjoy your first views of this volcanic island dominated by Mount Epomeo, as you travel across the Bay of Naples by hydrofoil, on your way to discover Ischia further. 17 Prestige Full Day POMPEII & HERCULANEUM SELECT Tour( 8 h 30 m ) Travel from Sorrento, along the scenic route out of the Sorrentine Peninsula, and onto the motorway until the exit for Herculaneum. Herculaneum was a residential coastal town which has been superbly preserved after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. On arrival at the entrance of the site, your guide will wait for you to pay your entrance fees and you will then have the chance to view the town from above, before heading down and for the guided tour, which lasts about an hour. It is incredible to see that there are still original timbers showing in the buildings and clay pots stored as they would have been at the time of the eruption. It was believed that many of the inhabitants tried to flee unsuccessfully towards the sea to escape the lava, unlike those in Pompeii who did not have a chance to move before being overcome by the lava. After a visit lasting 1 hour and a half, proceed to Pompeii, stopping first for a light lunch, a 3 course menu included in tour price. After lunch the guided tour inside Pompeii's ruins will take you to the House of the Argus, a grand place judging by its courtyard, but which is dwarfed by the Casa dell'albergo across the street, which covers a huge area. 24 - GENERAL TERMS & CONDITIONS AGREEMENT BOOKING - CONFIRMATION All tours have to be booked with Gartour by (gartour@gartour.net or through our web site Some tours/excursions are on Free Sale basis (with automatic confirmation), while other tours/excursion are On Request and can be considered valid only after our booking confirmation. Upon confirmation we will advise whether free pick-up service from hotel is possible (if so, we will advise pick-up time) or if clients will have to make their own way to meeting point to join the tour. All the rates indicated are in and intended per person. PICK-UP IN HOTEL / PRESENTATION AT MEETING POINT For those tours including pick-up from hotel, clients have to be in the lobby of hotel waiting for tour representative on time. Then clients will be accompanied to the meeting point and shown the particular bus or guide for their specific tour in their language (please note that all tours may be performed in more than one language). IMPORTANT: At certain times there may be unforseen delays in the arranged pick-up times but we kindly request clients to wait in the hotel lobby. For those tours not including pick-up from hotel, we ask to all clients to be at the designated meeting points at the advised time in order participate (usually meeting time is minutes prior departure). No reimbursement wil be granted to clients who is not at the indicated place of pick-up/departure at the time established. Similarly, no reimbursement will be granted to clients who depart the tour prematurely, lose contact with the guide or who do not complete the tour/excursion. CHANGES & CANCELLATIONS It may happen that, due to operational difficulties or reasons beyond our control (travel conditions, strikes, changes in opening hours, closure of museums, delays or other unforseen circumstances) tour providers may be forced to change or cancel a tour. Tour companies reserve the right to cancel a tour without prior notice due to reasons beyond their control with the only obligation of reimbursing the cost of the tour. In this case, clients may claim reimbursement only of the amount paid. In the event of unforessen schedule or itinerary changes beyond control, tour companies reserve the right to provide no reimbursement. LIABILITY Gartour and partnering tour companies are not responsible for any loss of personal valuables, luggage or objects during excursions, or for any loss of personal items which are left on tour coaches, or for any damage casued by third parties to personal items during the tour. We are not also responsible for partial or total closures of museums, monuments and churches, delays or irregularities caused by third parties. Then an alternative itinerary and visits to other museums wil be proposed, without any variation to the established tariff, and clients will be informed prior to departure. In the event of unforeseen schedule or itinerary changes beyond control, tour companies reserve the right to not grant any reimbursements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND NOTES Please note that Italian laws do not permit selling alcoholic beverage to teens under 18 years of age; therefore clients under-age will be served non-alcoholic beverages. We regret that not all the tours are accessible to guests with wheelchairs or physical impairments requiring special assistance. Please let us know in advance of any special needs or clients' impaired mobility in order to determine whether participation in a particular tour is possible. COMPLAINTS Any client complaint must be communicated to Gartour in writing within and no later than 10 working days after the date of the tour. Thereafter Gartour is not obliged to review complaints and no reimbursements will be approved.
