2 SORRENTO DUOMO Located in the heart of Sorrento, the Cathedral dates back to the X-XII centuries, when it was transferred inside the urban surrounding wall. Sorrento Cathedral is dedicated to the Saints Phillip and James and it is said to be risen on the ruins of an ancient Temple dedicated to Jupiter. The Church houses paintings by artists from the Neapolitan school of the 1700s, an archbishop s throne in fine marbles (1573) and a wooden marquetry work of Sorrentine craftsmen of the beginning of the 19 th century. In the last chapel on the left an important nativity scene of the Neapolitan tradition is kept. The poet Torquato Tasso, the best known citizen of the town, was baptized in the church's baptistery. DOMINOVA SEAT This is the only remaining testimony of the old noble seats and dates to the XVI century. The 17 th century cupola is formed by green and yellow majolica roof-tiles. THE OLD WALLS A part of the Greek defensive wall still remaining is under the road at the Porta Parsano Nuova and can be viewed close to the same door. CLOISTER A few meters from Piazza Sant Antonino, where the Basilica dedicated to the patron saint of Sorrento stands, in Piazza Francesco Saverio Gargiulo close to the Villa Comunale rises a historic triptych set in a volcanic tuff wall known around the Peninsula Area as conventual complex of San Francesco d Assisi. The elements which characterize the triptych are: the Church, the Monastery and the Cloister. During the summer period, the Cloister is transformed and becomes the background for works of art exhibitions and of the Sorrentine Musical Summer, an extraordinary continuation of appointments bound to music with the presence of artists coming from all over the world.

La Mortella Gardens: One of England's most important contemporary composers, Sir William Walton, spent much of his life in Italy. He particularly loved the area around the Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast where he found inspiration for much of his early music. In 1949, he and his wife Lady Susana purchased property on the hill of Zaro in an attractive corner of the island of Ischia. Here they could get away from London city life and William started to work on his lyric opera "Troilus and Cressida". Naming the site "La Mortella", after the wild myrtles found growing there, they built a house carved into the native volcanic rock. The garden, started in 1956, was created on the site of a gigantic stone quarry, and designed by English landscape designer Russell Page, containing many beautiful and innovative concepts. Extending over an area of 16,000 square meters, these beautifully landscaped gardens complete with pools and fountains have thousands of unusual, rare specimens of Mediterranean climate plants from around the world. Sir William Walton died in 1983, Lady Susana still lives at La Mortella. Guests usually get 2-3 hours in gardens. Before the visit lunch stop. Pompeii and Herculaneum are the largest towns of the five buried by the Vesuvian eruption of 79 AD, and they are also the most fully excavated, although they were buried by the same eruption, Pompeii was covered mainly by ash, and Herculaneum by mud and lava, it is interesting to compare building techniques and life style walking round the sites, as Pompeii lived off commerce. Whereas Herculaneum was a fishing community, but by the first century it was becoming a fashionable holiday resort both towns were discovered and excavated mid-18th century. About 75% of Pompeii has now been excavated, compared to 25% of Herculaneum, where the new town been built over the archaeological site. There is free time lunch between the two visits, and return to Sorrento is in the late afternoon. Arrive at Terminal Busvia del Vesuvio in Boscoreale in Via Cifelli (entrance of Vesuvius National Park). This is not the main entrance, so is not crowded, and it will drive up the hill of the National Park of Vesuvius. Arrive at the Reserve AltoTirone, disembark the bus and begin the nature trail along the old road Matrone's Road which takes about 25 minutes to reach the top Piazzale Superiore which is at 1050 meters altitude. This path is much quieter than the main route where the coaches stop. Walk along the path that leads to the large crater, with an Alpine guide (required for access to the crater). Here, there are spectacular views spanning the entire Gulf of Naples, the Sorrento Peninsula and the islands of Capri and Ischia.
