1 INDICATOR RESULTS FACT SHEET SET08: ACCESSIBLE SITES OF CULTURAL DEFINITION - OBJECTIVE The indicator determines the important areas of tourist interest of Zone ΙV that are accessible via an interchange of the axis and in particular (a) the position, (b) time distance of the closest Egnatia Motorway axis, (c) the number of visitors they accept, for which official information is available and (d) the total tourist movement per Prefecture of Zone IV. The indicator s objective is to determine the operation effects of the Egnatia Motorway as regards the access to areas of tourist interest and consequently the acknowledgement of tourist assets in the area affected by the axis. RESULTS- ASSESSMENT In this phase, the indicator represents the tourist movement in the area of the Egnatia Motorway Impact Zone IV 1. The primary information is provided by NSSG and concerns: arrivals of foreigners per means of transport and entrance station, arrivals and overnight staying at tourist accommodation units hotel capacity, tourist visits to museums and archeological sites and finally ticket collection for entering museums and archeological sites. According to the elaboration of NSSG data for the last decade, carried out by the Observatory of Egnatia Odos, the zone crossed by the Egnatia Motorway covers a percentage of approximately 25% of the tourist arrivals seeking for accommodation and 16% of the respective number seeking for an overnight staying of the total of the country, having as main poles the Prefectures of Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, Magnissia, Kavala and Pieria. Generally, we observe that during the time period from 1996 to 1 The 5 Regions crossed by the Egnatia Motorway are: Epirus, Thessaly, West Macedonia, Central Macedonia, East Macedonia & Thrace.

2 2006, the tourist accommodation units number on the impact zone of the Egnatia Odos Motorway has been substantially increased, surpassing the average increase of the country (45.5% as opposed to 14.4%). During this time period, West Macedonia Region has doubled the amount of tourist accommodation capacity offered (increase by 100%, the peak noted at the Prefectures of Grevena and Kastoria). A big increase has been observed in the number of hotel units in the Region of Epirus (65.3%, the peak noted at the Prefectures of Ioannina and Arta) and Central Macedonia (57,9%, with a peak noted at the Municipality of Pella). A substantial increase has also been observed at several Prefectures of the zone during the period , with an average of positive alteration of 6.3%. The Prefectures with the highest increase are the following: Thesprotia, Arta, Pieria and Halkidiki with alterations for the time period from 7.5% to 30%. During the same time period an increase has been observed at the Regions of Central Macedonia (5.5%), East Macedonia & Thrace and Epirus (2.3%), while the Regions of Central Macedonia and Thessaly have shown a reduction of 1% and 0.3% respectively. 2

4 INDICATOR RESULTS FACT SHEET SET08: ACCESSIBLE AREAS OF TOURIST INTEREST As regards the arrival of foreigners, it should be pointed out that they are recorded on the Impact Zone of the Egnatia Motorway and are connected either directly (Kipi- Prefecture of Evros), or through a perpendicular road with the motorway. It should also be pointed out that arrivals by car do not concern exclusively the tourist movement but they also serve commuting (eg immigrants, businessmen etc). An increase in the four most important northern city entrances to Greece has been observed (Evzoni, Kakavia, Krystallopigi, Promahonas), while the remaining have shown no signs of change. In particular, for the time period from , the average highest amount of arrivals in Greece is recorded at the border station of Kakavia (24.3%) followed by Promahonas (23%), Evzoni (21.8%), Krystallopigi (14.1%) and Kipi. (6.5%). The remaining increases are divided between the stations of Niki at the Prefecture of Florina (4.7%), Doirani at the Prefecture of Kilkis (2,6%), Ormenio and Kastanies at the Prefecture of Evros (2.6% και 0.5% respectively). In the majority of road border stations with the exception of Doirani, Kastanies and Krystallopigi, there has been an increase of arrivals by 16.6%, 15.1 and 6% respectively, during the years The highest increase has been recorded at Promahonas (35.7%), Kakavia (18.3%) and Kipi (18.1%). The remaining border stations have shown during the same time period an increase of 4.8% (Ormenio) up to 17.8% (Evzoni). Generally at the Prefecture level and for the year 2006, Thessaloniki comes first in the number of tourist arrivals, with a percentage of 24.1% (one fourth) of the total of arrivals, within the Impact Zone of the Egnatia Motorway, followed by the Prefectures of Halkidiki and Magnissia.
