GETTING THERE Lyon is right in the heart of Europe, midway between London and Milan, Brussels and Marseille, Munich and Madrid. With Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport, France s TGV, high-speed train links, and a network of major European motorways, Lyon and the Rhône area are at one of Europe s major transport interchanges Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport The Lyon Airport, 25 km east of Lyon, is a key transport hub where air routes, high-speed TGV train and major European motorways all meet. The TGV station, located in Terminal 2 of Roissy-CDG airport provides for quick and easy connections between the train and the aircraft. Trains reach Lyon in 2 hours, every 1 hour. Train ticket and seat allocation have to be booked in advance. HOTEL ACCOMMODATION Block bookings have been made in various hotels in downtown Lyon from 12 to 20 October 2002 (see list of hotels overleaf). The map of Lyon indicates the location of these hotels, the Palais des Congrès and the TGV train station. You are urged to reserve your accommodation as soon as possible as October is usually a very busy period in Lyon. 4 4.2. HOW TO BOOK A ROOM Reservation must be made through the attached reservation form only (see page 7) which has to be sent by fax or to Package. Refer to the above hotel list, then mention in order of preference, 4 hotels. Reservation cannot be processed without payment of the requested hotel deposit, which is two nights in advance of your first hotel choice. The remittance balance of your stay must be paid at your hotel in Lyon. Methods of payment in : cheques, bank transfers, credit cards (VISA - EURO-MASTER CARD - DINERS) payable to Package. Once your request has been received and processed by Package, confirmation of your reservation will be sent to you by air mail with a receipt of payment, a brochure of your hotel and a practical information document. THURSDAY 17 OCTOBER 2002, 20:00 23:00 Conference diner at «Brasserie Georges» : 55. This 100 years old brewery is one of the highlighting places in the gastronomic Lyons. It s a typical restaurant with a surprising and original architectural style. Guests enter the place and discover the "French bistro s" setting and musical mood. Tables and chairs are conveniently located throughout the room, for comfortable seating. The first pleasure is to taste the Beaujolais primeur wine and goat s milk cheese. Here, a kiosk is set up in the middle of the room, displaying a cask of new wine, manned by waiters in traditional Beaujolais dress. Then each guest finds his place and dinner is served, featuring a traditional Lyonnais Menu, accompanied by Côte du Rhône wine. 5 6.2 ACCOMPANYING PERSONS PROGRAMME DISCOVERING THE HISTORIC SITE OF LYON : UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE MONDAY 14TH OCTOBER :30-17:30 A.M. Lyon, listed as a Unesco World Heritage, a meeting place of men and ideas, is a truly exceptional town which has been shaped by history over the last 2000 years. From the top of the hill looking down from the promenade, one can admire a wonderful view over Lyon and even, if the weather is clear enough, Mont Blanc. Traditionally, on Fourvière Hill, there were several monasteries hence the name, the praying hill. The Basilica was built at the end of the 19th century by a Lyonnais architect, Pierre Bossan. To the south-east of the hill: the Gallo- Roman sites. The founding of Lugdunum in 43 B.C. where one can visit an excavated theatre (the oldest in France). Walking down the hill towards the old town by attractive streets, lunch will be enjoyed in a traditional Bouchon restaurant. P.M. The splendour of the 15th and 16th Centuries still lingers on in Lyon. A wonderful ensemble spreads out along the right bank of the Saône, through the districts of St Georges, Saint-Jean and Saint Paul. It is one of the largest (8 acres) and finest Renaissance districts of France in fact, it is the largest after Venice. In the heart of the old town is the Saint Jean Cathedral. It was started in 1180 and took 300 years to build. Stained windows, a profusion of sculptures, pinnacles, triple arches and spiral stairways, hanging gardens and stone banisters greet the tourist s eye at every turn. Enthroned on its hill, Pérouges has remained a perfect example of a city of the Middle Ages. Village of craftsmen, it has no rich remains, but a unity without parallel, in which the houses give to its winding streets with their uneven paving their picturesque appearance. Lunch at the Hostellerie du Vieux Pérouges, where Bill CLINTON ate a few years ago, an old inn whose rooms are unchanged in appearance from the olden times : a monumental fire-place, a collection of pewter and earthenware; the whole is classed as a Historical Monument. Walk in the city: its narrow streets, its admirable facades, its gates and heavy doors... The show rooms enable you to follow the technical developments which the weaving industry has witnessed, from Philippe de Lassalle s 18th century drawloom to the 19th century Jacquard looms, leading up to the 20th century power loom. THE TEXTILE MUSEUM The Textile Museum is situated in the heart of the city between Rhône and Saône rivers. It s a place of history and contemporary spaces of culture, dedicated to the conservation and the brilliance of our patrimony. Successor to the Museum of Arts and Industry created by the Lyon Chamber of Commerce in 1864, the Textile Museum is now housed in the "Hôtel de Villeroy", former residence of the governor of the Lyon province in the 18th century. Its collections, among the largest in the world, trace the development of textile weaving over 2000 years and are an integral part of Lyon historical city, listed as a Unesco World Heritage. POST CONFERENCE VISIT TO CADARACHE (Issue2) on Monday 21 October morning Cadarache is one of the ten research centres of CEA (Commissariat à l Energie Atomique the French Atomic Energy Agency ). Cadarache is located in the South-East of France, 40kms from the city of Aix-en-Provence and is one of the official candidates to host ITER. Guests will have there the opportunity to: - Have a general overview of the centre hosting 18 nuclear facilities and more than 5000 people. - Visit Tore Supra, the largest superconducting Tokamak worldwide. - Get the latest information about the possibility to host ITER in Cadarache ( ). Bus shuttles will be offered from Lyon to Aix-en-Provence on Sunday morning (free lunch, afternoon and dinner in Aix). Transfer from Aix to Cadarache on Monday morning by bus. Technical visit in Cadarache. Lunch in Cadarache guest-house. End of the tour : 14h30 Those who will attend the ITPA Expert Group meetings in Cadarache from 21 to 23 October 2002 are kindly requested to fill the appropriate box.
