2 An exceptional year, an exceptional On Catalonia celebrates its, which commemorates the final defence of Barcelona during the War of the Spanish Succession in In a year when Catalonia is also commemorating the tercentenary of these events, the represents an opportunity to make this date something truly special. It is a day on which we not only honour our past, but also give voice to the desires of the Catalan people with regard to our collective future. The exceptional nature of this anniversary has prompted a wide range of participative, public-spirited activities to affirm our national identity, all linked by the common thread of Catalan culture and its universal scope. They will take place from 5 to 21, when Cardona will commemorate the fall of the last Catalan stronghold at the hands of the Bourbon army. On 10 the presidents of the Catalan Government and Parliament will pay their respects at the Fossar de les Moreres, a memorial plaza dedicated to the memory of the heroes who died defending Catalonia and the generations after them who defended our identity. This will be followed by the traditional official ceremony, which this year takes place at the Llotja de Mar. The evening of 10 will witness the celebration of Nit Blanca, or White Night, which is held in collaboration with the organisers of Catalonia s leading scenic-arts festivals. The neighbourhoods of Ribera, Born and Ciutadella will play host to numerous free cultural events, in which citizen participation takes centre stage. On the morning of, to coincide with the moment when Chief Minister Rafael Casanova was injured during the fighting, a performance by 300 cellists will feature in a ceremony of symbolic resistance incorporating music, poetry and song. The whole of Catalonia will celebrate the and there will be a series of events in locations that played an important part in the War of the Spanish Succession, such as Sant Boi and Cardona. Barcelona, which was the capital of Catalonia in 1714 and remains so today, will be the epicentre of the commemorative activities and on 10 will host talented performers drawn from local festivals throughout Catalonia, from locations as diverse as Tàrrega, Reus, Lleida, Vic and Manresa. 2
3 The image The poster Responsibility for creating the image of the 2014 was entrusted to Mario Eskenazi, who has imbued the project with his own distinctive talent. Using simple, flat colours and clearly drawn lines to produce visual elements reminiscent of Catalonia s national flag, Eskenazi has expressed the continuity and persistence of the Catalan identity and the inseparable link between 1714 and The versatility of the design allows these visual elements to be used in various different formats, meaning they will be present throughout the. The artist Mario Eskenazi (Córdoba, Argentina, 1945) is one of our most prestigious graphic designers; he has won multiple Laus awards and, in 2000, received the highest accolade in the field of Spanish design. Having fled the military dictatorship in Argentina, Eskenazi eventually arrived in Barcelona after spending time in Palma working as a teacher in the field of architecture. He has enjoyed a solid professional career, specialising in corporate identity, signage and editorial design, and has had his own studio since His style is notable for its simplicity and clarity, with compositions that are free of surplus elements. 3
