What do you think is the answer? If you are not sure - GUESS! Choose YES' or NO! A: The Sagrada Familia is predicted to be completed in B: On its completion it could hold 130,000 people inside. C: When the architect died, about 25% of the basilica had been built. Location 1 GAP FILL Read / Listen to Location 1. What is the correct answer for each space? Write one word in each space. Unfinished Masterpiece Good evening and welcome to ENWs first day in Barcelona! We arrived late this 1: on a flight from Newcastle in England and after we checked into our hotel ENW has decided to head out into the Barcelona 2:. It has just gone 19:45 and after a 50 minute metro ride we have reached our first stop on our first trip to Barcelona - the Sagrada Familia. In case you are not sure what this place is, it is perhaps along with the Camp Nou football stadium, the most recognised 3: in the city. The Sagrada Familia is an unfinished basilica, or very big church, that was first started in 1882 and is still being built today! Currently the predictions are that this Gothic-Art Nouveau inspired 4:, which with 2.8m annual visitors is the most popular attraction in Spain, will be finally completed in The architect of the Sagrada Familia is a Catalan-born maverick by the name of Antoni Gaudi. From 1883 until his death aged 73 in 1926 the 5: was set out to Gaudi s extraordinary vision. His idea was for a building with 17 towers - all over 100m high and big enough to hold 13,000 people. At his death only about 25% of the building had been completed and lack of funds, a 6: -war and arguments over its future has held up completion. That being said, under the Barcelona night sky and 7: by lights the Sagrada Familia is truly outstanding. Q & A 1 Who is the architect of the Sagrada Familia? 2 What style is the basilica inspired by? 3 How many annual visitors a year does it receive? 4 How long was the metro train ride? 5 What time did ENW arrive in Barcelona?
[4] Location 2 Part 3 Reading & Listening 2 ENW 330 Montjuic Read the title for the 2nd part of this special Barcelona podcast! Next read the three statements below. What do you think is the answer? If you are not sure - GUESS! Choose YES' or NO! A: Montjuic Fortress was originally built in B: The name translates as Jewish Mountain in English. C: The Montjuic cable car is 7,500 metres long. Location 2 Wrong Word! Read / Listen to Location 2. Circle the six mistakes in the text. Then write the correct words below. A Cable Car Ride ENW has decided to be a combination of lazy and the boring on Day 2 of our trip to Barcelona as we will be travelling, for the first time on one of our special travel edition podcasts, by cable car! The Barcelona cable car is not quite like the one you might see in camping resorts as it is only 750 metres long with a maximum height of 84.5 metres. But it will allow ENW to have a great view of Barcelona as we travel to the bottom of a hill. Which hill is ENW going to travel up and why? Well the answer to the first question is Montjuic which can translate as Hindu mountain in English. And the third reason is because we are going to Montjuic Fortress, which defended Barcelona for hundreds of years. Montjuic Fortress was first built in 1640, but was completely coloured-in between 1779 and This month the fortress is holding a special exhibition on Barcelona during WW2, and the role of sport in the city. The good news is that because ENW is an educator the ticket to the fortress is free! OK we have paid our 12 for the cable car and we await a free car Write the Correct Words! 1: 2: 3: 4: 5: 6: Q & A 1 How much is the cable car ticket? 2 What is the highest point the cable car travels to? 3 What exhibition is held this month? 4 How much was the fortress ticket for ENW? 5 What years were the fortress rebuilt?
[5] Location 3 Part 3 Reading & Listening 3 ENW 330 La Rambla Read the title for the 3rd part of this special Barcelona podcast! Next read the three statements below. What do you think is the answer? If you are not sure - GUESS! Choose YES' or NO! A: The Plaça d Espanya is located at the top of La Rambla. B: La Boqueria is a food market just off La Rambla. C: A monument to Christopher Columbus is located at the bottom. Location 3 Jumbled Paragraphs Read / Listen to Location 3. What is the correct order for the sentences in each paragraph. Shops, Stalls, a Market and a Tree Lined Street (a) The tree-lined pedestrian street stretches for 1.2km connecting Plaça de Catalunya at the top with Monument Colom or Cristopher Columbus Monument at the bottom. (b) Along the street are some of Barcelona s most famous buildings including the Teatre Principal - the oldest theatre in the city which first opened in (c) For the 3rd location on ENWs trip to Barcelona we have come to a former sewer-filled river bed that has become the most famous street in the city - La Rambla. (a) Not to be put off we have meandered down La Rambla first stopping off at the glorious food market La Boqueria that is situated just off the main street. (b) ENW has been slightly unfortunate with the weather as it is a blustery and damp day, with light but persistent rain. (c) Even though it is mid-march and the weather is not great, the street is still bustling and ENW has also been warned to look out for pickpockets who prey on distracted tourists. (a) We cannot but agree with Catalan poet Federico García Lorca who said of La Rambla, the only street in the world which I wish would never end! (b) OK, but where is the monument s entrance? (c) La Rambla is lovely with many sights, sounds and smells. (d) ENWs aim is to wander down to the Christopher Columbus Monument, pay 9 and get a lift to the top so we can view the whole street. P 1: P 2: P 3: Q & A 1 How long is La Rambla? 2 What building first opened in 1568? 3 What lines the side of La Rambla? 4 How much is the ticket? 5 What monument is located at the bottom of the street?
[6] Part 3 Reading & Listening 4 ENW 330 Location 4 Museum of Chocolate Read the title for the 4th part of this special Luxembourg podcast! Next read the three statements below. What do you think is the answer? If you are not sure - GUESS! Choose YES' or NO! A: Chocolate first arrived in Europe in the 16th Century. B: The chocolate museum building used to be a police station. C: The Temple of Augustus is a Roman ruin. Location 4 Which Word? Read / Listen to Location 4 Read the 7 words in the box and then put them in the correct place. 1 podcast 2 heavy 3 mainstay 4 memory 5 wandered 6 monastery 7 fountains Chocolate s Journey It is our final morning in Barcelona and in truth ENW could have chosen anywhere of a hundred locations to visit and report on. During our stay in Barcelona we have aside from the three places included in this 1:, been to the Camp Nou to watch FC Barcelona, 2: along the beach front, visited Roman remains at the Temple of Augustus, chased away pigeons in a couple of spectacular parks and wandered past churches, shrines, 3: and so much else. Barcelona is a brilliant city, but our last location before our long flight back to Japan, is all about chocolate! Just around the corner from the Arc de Triomf Metro station is a former 4: that traces the history of chocolate since its arrival in Europe in the 15th Century. Inside the Museu de la Xocolata are imaginative displays that showcase how chocolate has become such a 5: of world cuisine. It also explains some of the myths, images and legends of chocolate and explains how chocolate should and should not be eaten! ENW is waiting patiently to pay our 6 ticket and on this lovely sunny, if slightly damp Monday morning it is with a 6: heart that ENW will soon be getting in a taxi to the airport. Barcelona is a fantastic city, full of so many sights, sounds and smells. We have had many highlights, but our favourite 7: is the Sangrada Famillia illuminated at night - it is truly spectacular! Q & A 1 What is the name of the metro station? 2 How much did the museum ticket cost? 3 What did ENW chase away? 4 What was the museum building used for? 5 What was ENWs favourite location in Barcelona?
[7] Part 4 Post Listening / Reading ENW 330 Writing Which One? Writing Which as your favourite Barcelona location? Write as many reasons! Research the city and find TWO more locations you would like to visit. Write about your choices and explain why you chose them! And finally Did you Know..? (T) These include Bulgaria, Palestine, Beirut, Ethiopia, Greece, Malta, Russia and England! (U) His flag is a red cross on a white background - which is the national flag of England and Georgia and can also be found on the city emblems of Beirut, Genoa, Milan, Preston, Barcelona and Moscow! (V) That the patron saint of Catalonia is called Jordi, or George in English. (W) So popular is St George is that he is the patron saint of 12 countries! (X) It seems that St George is a pretty busy saint then! (Y) His saints day is April 23rd and it is suspected that originally he was a Roman solider who was born in Syria around AD280. (Z) The most famous story connected to Saint George is that he rescued a maiden doomed for sacrifice by a killing a dragon.
