Furthermore, you can find information about the public transport system and a list of things you could see in Stockholm. 5 1. Nobel Museum Stortorget 2, Stockholm On the first day of the conference, Tuesday 16 of December, a welcome reception will be held at the Nobel museum. You are welcome to join the guided tour, starting at 19:00 at the entrance of the museum. After the guided tour there will be a welcome-reception. In the museum you can find information about the Nobel Prize, its founder and also the Nobel Laureates and their creative endeavours. At 18:30, an organized group will depart from the big Christmas tree, at the entrance of the KTH. Please bring a valid travel card with you. Information to obtain such a travel card can be found in this document. For those who wish to travel on their own, travel instructions can be found below. Public Transport To get there from Tekniska Högskolan station, take the red subway line towards Fruängen or Liljeholmen and exit at Gamla Stan station (7 min). Then it is a short walk to the Nobel museum, see map. 4

6 By foot (34min, 2.6km) Cross Valhallavägen and follow Engelbrektsgatan Turn left towards Birger Jarlsgatan Take a right turn to keep on the Birger Jarlsgatan Turn left towards Norrlandsgatan Follow the road towards Kungsträdgårdsgatan. Keep heading straight on Strömbron over the bridge After the bridge take a slight bend to follow Skeppsbron. 7 2. Vasa museum Galärvarvsvägen 14, Stockholm On the second day of the conference, Wednesday 17 December, a dinner is organized at the Vasa museum. You are welcome to join the guided tour, starting at 19:00 at the entrance of the museum. The dinner starts at 20:00. The Vasa museum is dedicated to the ship called Vasa, which capsized at its maiden voyage in In 1961, the ship was salvaged and since 1988 it is on exhibition in the Vasa museum. At 18:20, an organized group will depart from the big Christmas tree, at the entrance of the KTH. Please bring a valid travel card with you. Information to obtain such a travel card can be found in this document. For those who wish to travel on their own, travel instructions can be found below. Public Transport To get there from Östra station (Bus station at KTH), take the bus line 44 towards Skansen and exit at Nordiska museet/vasamuseet (12min). From there it is a 5min walk to get to the Vasamuseet. 6

8 By foot (33min, 2.7km) To get there by foot, Walk towards the south-east direction along Valhallavägen. Turn right towards Artillerigatan Turn left towards Östermalmsgatan On the roundabout take the road towards Narvavägen Walk over the bridge (Djurgårdsbron) Take the right to Galärvarvsvägen. 7

9 3. KTH Nuclear reactor Drottning Kristinas väg 51 On the third day of the conference, Thursday 18 December, a farewell reception is organized for those who chose to attend it. At 19:00 a welcome drink will be served with a short talk about the venue. Thereafter a Swedish julbord (Christmas buffé) will be offered together with seasonal choir music. The reception will be held in the building were the first (experimental) nuclear reactor of Sweden was situated. At 18:45, an organized group will depart from the big Christmas tree, at the entrance of the KTH. For those who wish to travel on their own, travel instructions can be found below. From the Tekniska Högskolan metro station it is a short walk to go get to the nuclear reactor (7min) 8

11 4. Lab tour There will be a lab tour organised at Thursday 18 December at 17:15. The tour will be showing the Odqvist Laboratory at the KTH campus which is collaboration between the laboratories of solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, light weight structures and the Marcus Wallenberg laboratory. If you wish to join the lab tour, there will be an opportunity on the first day of the conference, Tuesday 16 December, to sign up for the tour. 10

12 5. Public transport To travel with the public transport (bus, metro, tram), there are two options. The first is the use of an electronic smart card, SL-card. It can be purchased at the SL-center located in the Tekniska Högskolan metro station. The card costs 20 SEK. The card can be loaded with credit at a vending machine or the SL-center and the minimum amount is 100 SEK. Each trip within central Stockholm costs 25 SEK. Alternatively, the card can also be loaded with a travelcard which gives unlimited access for a certain amount of time; the prices are 24 Hours 115 SEK, 72 Hours 230 SEK, 7 days 300 SEK. The second option is to buy a zone ticket at a vending machine or the SL-center. With the zone ticket you can travel within one zone for a limited amount of time (75min). For zone 1 the ticket costs 36 SEK. If you plan to travel more than twice with the public transport during your stay, the SL card is the best option. If you intend to travel more than 9 times within three days a 72 Hours ticket is the most cost effective. More info on ticket prices can be found at Metro Map 11

13 6. Things to see in Stockholm 1. Gamla Stan Gamla Stan is the living cradle of Stockholm's birth more than three quarters of a millennium ago. There's been a settlement here since at least 1252, though now the locals are more likely to run taverns and waffle-shops than fishing boats or pillaging raids. Take a historic tour through its maze of winding medieval alleyways, small squares, ancient churches and Royal Palace. It can be reached by taking the subway to Gamla Stan. 2. Vaxholm Idyllic archipelago town with many well-preserved wooden houses from the turn of the last century, painted in the archipelago s typical delicate pastel tones. Vaxholm has numerous charming restaurants, cafés and shops. Vaxholm is easily accessible year round, by Waxholmsbolagets boat traffic or by bus which takes approximately 1 hour. If you take the bus, the trip is covered by Stockholm's public transport service. 3. Fotografiska museet Fotografiska is an international meeting place where everything revolves around photography. Located in the heart of Stockholm, the museum has an exhibition space of 2500 square meters, and features 4 major exhibitions per year and approximately minor exhibitions. The exhibitions are among the city's most popular attractions. Fotografiska museet is located at Stadsgårdshamnen 22, Stockholm. From T- Centralen it takes approximately 20 min to get there by bus. 4. Skansen Skansen is the world's first open-air museum, founded in Here you can stroll through five centuries of Swedish history, from north to south, with a real sense of the past all around in the historical buildings and dwellings, peopled by characters in period dress. One can also see both domestic and wild Nordic animals such as bears, wolves and lynx. Skansen is located at Djurgårdsslätten 49-51, Stockholm. From T-Centralen it takes approximately 15 min to get there by tram. 5. City Hall The Stockholm City Hall is one of Sweden s most famous buildings, and one of the capital's most visited tourist attractions. It houses offices for 200 people including the Municipal Council, and is also famous for its grand ceremonial halls and unique art pieces. The Stockholm City Hall is the venue of the Nobel Prize banquet held on 10 December each year. The city hall is located at Hantverkargatan 1, Stockholm. From T-Centralen it takes approximately 8 min to get there by tunnelbana. 12
