1 /C'II I ;LEN C.. s,nderson WATERFOWL CENSUSES ON CERTAIN RESERVOIRS IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS Glen C. Sanderson, Head Setion of Wildlife Researh inois Natural History Survey Urbana, inois August 198 INTRODUCTION From the fall of 1972 through , from 9 to 12 aerial waterfowl ensuses were made at approximately 2week intervals on 6 or 7 reservoirs in southern inois (Sanderson 1978). In 1972, Lake Springfield, Sanghris Lake, Carlyle Lake, Rend Lake, Baldwin Lake, and Coffeen Lake were ensused. In 1975, Shelbyville Lake was added, and from through the 7 reservoirs were ensused eah year for waterfowl. In , the Central 111 inois Publi Servie Co. (CIPS) Lake near Bogota and the inois Power Co. (IP) Lake near Clinton were added; however, CIPSBogota was ensused only 5 times and IPClinton only 4 times. During , Lake Springfield, Shelbyville Lake, Carlyle Lake, and Rend Lake were eah ensused 5 times; Baldwin Lake 1 times, Lake Sanghris 11 times; and Coffeen Lake 4 times. In 19798, the same 9 lakes were ensused, but IPClinton was ensused 7 times, Lake Shelbyville 4 times, CIPSBogota 8 times, and the other lakes 9 times eah (Table 1). Fog prevented ensuses one eah on Lake Shelbyville, Baldwin Lake, CIPSBogota, and IPClinton. More ensuses were not made on Lake Shelbyville beause it required extra flying time and on many days depending on the weather and number of birds to be ountedthere was not enough time to ensus it. Exept for the ensus on 13 Deember, ensuses on IPClinton were made during the 11 northeast 11 flights instead of with the "southern" flights. Thus, they were of ten made on different dates than the ensus flights on the other reservoirs. Although few birds were ounted on Coffeen Lake, it was ensused beause of its onvenient loation and relatively sma 11 size. These surveys have been made in the same manner and by the same individual (Robert Crompton, inois Natural History Survey). Nine flights were made in eah of the first 3 seasons and on most of the reservoirs in 19798, 12 flights were made in , and 11 flights were made in eah of and , Dates of the initial flights ranged from 27 Otober 1978 to 6 Deember 1973, Dates of the final flights ranged from 21 Marh 1973 to 13 April 1977, Only those speies of waterfowl listed in Tables 2 and 3 were identified during these flights. Birds ensused on these flights inluded 19 speies of duks, two speies of geese (small raes of Canada geese were reognized for the first time in ), oot, bald eagle, ormorant, mute swan, and ommon loon. Only one speies (loon) was identified for the first time in 19798, and 3 speies or raes (wood duk, small Canada geese, and mute swan), ounted in 1 or more previous seasons, were not seen in

2 Sanderson 2 From through waterfowl ensuses on the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri, to Cairo, inois, were onduted under a series of ontrats with the Corps of Engineersfirst with the Waterways Experiment Station, Viksburg, Mississippi, and more reently with the St. Louis Distrit, 21 North 12th Street, St. Louis, Missouri. The results of the ensuses on the Mississippi River were reported by Bellrose et al. (1973) and Sanderson et al. (1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, and 198). The results of the earlier ensuses of the reservoirs were reported by Sanderson (1978 and 1979). The present report presents the results of the ensuses of the reservoirs in Most of these ensuses were onduted on the return flights from Cairo after the Mississippi River was ensused. In 19798, Commonwealth Edison ontributed approximately $2, for ensusing ooling lakes at Commonwealth Edison power plants, and inois Power Company provided $43 for ensusing Clinton Lake in RESULTS The total number of eah speies ounted on eah flight and the dates of the flights are given in Table 1. The total number of eah speies ounted and the average number of eah speies ounted per flight are shown in Tables 2 and 3. These figures are not diretly omparable beause Lake Shelbyville was added in and CIPSBogota and IPClinton were added in Also, not all reservoirs were ensused during eah flight in and Mallards were always in first plae in the total number ensused during the season and in the average number seen per flight. The total ount of this speies ranged from 151,381 in to 1,145,88 in The total ount for was 833,395, up 8.4% over the total ount for the previous season. The average number of mallards per flight ranged from 16,82 in to 97,662 in The average number seen per flight in was 92,599, up 32.4% from The Canada goose was always seond both in the total number ounted for the season and the average number ounted per flight. Total ounts of Canada geese ranged from a low of 112,953 in to a high of 571,825 in The total ount for was 23.3% higher than for the previous season. The average number of Canada geese per flight ranged from 12,55 in to 63,536 in The average ount per flight was 27.7% higher in than in , Other speies whose ounts averaged 1, or more per flight in one or more seasons (Table 3) were the blak duk, ommon goldeneye, ommon merganser, pintail, oot, Amerian wigeon, lesser saup, ringneked duk, anvasbak, lesser snow goose, bluewinged teal, and Amerian greenwinged teal. The two teals were the only speies on this list for the first time in The bluewinged teal made the list beause of 6,5 birds ensused on Carlyle Lake and 4,9 on Rend Lake on 25 Marh 198. There were also relatively high ounts of Amerian greenwinged teal on this same date on these two reservoirs.

3 Sanderson 3 The average number of waterfowl ounted per flight was slightly less than 111, in (Table 3). In the average ount delined to slightly less than 39, per flight. There were substantial inreases eah year from through , when the ounts averaged slightly more than 157, waterfowl seen during eah flight. Most of this inrease ame from mallards and Canada geese and perhaps indiates the inreased use by these speies of some of the relatively new reservoirs in southern inois (Fig. 1). The average number of all waterfowl ounted per flight delined in to slightly more than 111,, probably as a result of the prolonged severe winter weather present in inois during the winter of Most of the deline in was aused by a redution of more than 46, in the average number of mallards observed per flight (Table 3). The total ount inreased slightly to about 115, in , The average number of mallards inreased by about 2, from to , but at the same time the average number of Canada geese delined by about 28, seen per flight. Sanderson et al. (1979) reported the highest ounts in for all speies seen during a 7year period on the Mississippi River from St. Louis to Cairo. Thus, the severe winter weather that ontinued in and the old, wet spring and floods in the spring of 1979 probably influened the distribution of the waterfowl between the reservoirs and the Mississippi River in inois in Speies showing the highest ounts per flight in for the 8year ensus period were the Canada goose, ommon goldeneye, ommon merganser, pintail, oot, Amerian wigeon, lesser saup, northern shoveler, ringneked duk, lesser snow goose, bluewinged teal, Amerian greenwinged teal, gadwall, ruddy duk, hooded merganser, and bufflehead. The inrease in Canada geese and mallards from to aounted for muh of the inrease in total waterfowl seenfrom 114,96 in to 26,215 (79,4%) in Sanderson et al. (198) reported a deline from 62,337 seen per ensus flight on the Mississippi River from St. Louis to Cairo in to 58,24 (6.6%) in Thus, the inrease in waterfowl ensused per flight on the reservoirs in over the previous season was aused to a large degree by something other than a movement of birds from the Mississippi River to the reservoirs. The high average ounts per flight for the ommon goldeneye and the ommon merganser observed in and ontinued to inrease in The high average ounts for both speies in were on 13 Deember, whereas in they were 48 January. For the first 6 seasons, the highest average ount per ensus for the oot was in (Table 3), The average ount for oots in , 8,768 per flight, was 115% higher than in , but the average for this speies per ensus in was 16,44, an inrease of 87. 1% over the previous season. The highest ount of oots on the Mississippi River from St. Louis to Cairo in was on 25 Marh (Sanderson et al. 198); the same date as the highest ount on the reservoirs (Table 1, page 7), During the previous season, the highest ounts of oots on the river were in late Marh and early April, whereas the highest ounts on the reservoirs were in late Otober, early November, and early Deember (Sanderson 1979),

4 Sanderson 4 Both total numbers (from 188,535 to 571,825) and average number seen per ensus (from 17, 14 to 63,536) inreased substantially for the Canada goose from to on these reservoirs in southern inois. There were substantial dereases in both total number and number per flight from to (Sanderson 1979). It was speulated that the severe winter weather may have been responsible for the hange. Sanderson et al. (198) reported a derease in total numbers from 162,59 to 112,855 and in average number per ensus flight from 14,781 to 11,286 from to in Canada geese on the Mississippi River from St. Louis to Cairo. In , only one individual ount exeeded 1, Canada geese on a single reservoir64, on Rend Lake on 8 January 1979 (Sanderson 1979). In 19798, 13, Canada geese were ensused on Carlyle Lake on 48 January and from 12, to 94, were ounted on Rend Lake on eah of 7 flights from 2 November 1979 through 3 Marh 198. The highest ount was 94, on 4 February 198. Exept for a deline in , Canada geese on end Lake have shown a fairly onsistent inrease in number ounted per flight from through (Fig. 2). In ontrast to Rend Lake, Canada geese on Lake Carlyle have remained relatively low and stable, exept for slight inreases in and (Fig. 3). The mallard showed the reverse piture. Its numbers remained relatively stable on Rend Lake from through exept for a moderate inrease in followed by a moderate deline in (Fig. 2). On Lake Carlyle, the mallard dereased from to , then inreased from 2 seasons, dereased slightly from to , dereased substantially from to , inreased to an all time high in , and delined to its levels of and in Exept for when mallard numbers were about the same on Rend and Carlyle, the mallard has been more numerous on Lake Carlyle than on Rend Lake.
