2 Itinerary Day 1 DEPART AUSTRALIA Departure from Sydney. Fri 30 May Day 2 ARRIVE AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND Sat 31 May Welcome to Amsterdam! Arrive in the morning and after clearing customs we will be transferred to our hotel in central Amsterdam. The hotel has been carefully chosen for its close proximity to the boat docks for easy access when time to board. After check-in the day will be at your leisure to explore this vibrant city. Holland's sophisticated, modern capital has a rich 700-year-old history and a distinct ambiance. You can stroll through the lively marketplace or see the works of famous Dutch masters at world-renowned museums such as the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh. Evening introduction to European agriculture and Dutch production systems, before dinner tonight at nearby restaurant The Stork overlooking the city and harbor. ( - - D) Movenpick Hotel or similar Day 3 AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND Sun 1 Jun Breakfast today, before a guided morning excursion into nearby Dutch agricultural areas. Visit properties with both sheep and cattle production, on the famous Dutch polders. This afternoon we transfer to the docks to board our Magnificent Europe cruise boat. The Avalon staff will be waiting at the docks to greet us and assist us onboard the river boat. This evening we will have a chance to get to know the crew at an evening welcome reception. ( - - D) Avalon Cruise Day 4 AMSTERDAM Mon 2 Jun There is no better way to see Amsterdam than by canal boat, cruising Day 8 STRASBOURG, FRANCE through the elegant grachten lined with stately homes dating back to Amsterdam's "Golden Age." Afterward, bid tot ziens (farewell) to Holland and set sail for Germany. After leaving Amsterdam we cruise the Amsterdam canal (with our first experience of a massive lock system) which will link us to the Rhine River. Cruise overnight leaving Holland, and moving into Germany. Day 5 COLOGNE, GERMANY Tue 3 Jun Today, enjoy a peaceful morning of cruising before reaching Cologne in the late morning. The boat will dock in the city centre, which provides easy access to the city, and the cathedral. One of Germany's largest cities and capital of the Rhineland, Cologne straddles both sides of the Rhine, and is known for its soaring, twinsteepled gothic cathedral. Choose between an included guided city walk or jewish heritage walk. The Old Town abounds with cafes, shops, and taverns. Be sure to try a Kolsch pale lager, locally brewed in Cologne for over a hundred years! Rhine Valley wine town, visit Siegfried s Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum, where you'll see and hear a large collection of self-playing calliopes and music boxes from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. Free time to pick up some souvenirs on the narrow, cobblestoned Drosselgasse, where colorful flowers, open-air wine gardens, and live music add to the festive atmosphere. Day 7 EXCURSIONS TO MAINZ AND HEIDELBERG Thu 5 Jun Strategically located at the confluence of the Rhine and Main Rivers is Mainz, with "civilized" origins dating back to around 38 BC. Today, this is Germany's largest and most important wine market. Join your Local Guide for a guided walk through the Altstadt (Old Town) with its many intriguing shops and the whimsical Fastnachtsbrunnen (Carnival Fountain) on the Schillerplatz, a tribute to the jesters at the city's annual Carnival celebration. Gutenberg, father of modern printing, was born here, and you'll visit the captivating Gutenberg Museum. After lunch, travel to Heidelberg, home to the oldest university in Germany. With a Local Guide, visit the imposing ruins of Heidelberg Castle, towering magnificently over the city and among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps. You'll also see the famed Great Vat, the "World's Largest Wine Barrel." At nearly 7 metres (23 feet) high and 8 metres (28 feet) wide, the cask holds over 219 Litre (58,000 gallons) of wine and has a dance floor built on top of it! Alternatively, you might prefer to spend all day in Heidelberg, foregoing the morning visit of Mainz. Fri 6 Jun Situated on the border of France and Germany, Strasbourg blends the cultures of both countries in a delightful way. As capital of the Alsace region and seat of the Council of Europe and European Parliament, it is without a doubt an important city that manages to retain its historic charm. On your guided sightseeing tour, visit the monumental red-sandstone gothic cathedral with its ancient murals, stained-glass windows, and fascinating astronomical clock, as well as the magical La Petite France district, home to half-timber houses, quaint shops, inviting bistros, and a waterfront promenade. Also spend time exploring Place Kleber, a large historic square in the heart of the city, and Place Gutenberg in the heart of medieval Strasbourg, which features a statue of the inventor of the printing press. An optional excursion into the Alsace wine country is available today. In the afternoon enjoy a hosted excursion into the nearby wine and agricultural region of Germany. Day 9 BREISACH, GERMANY (BLACK FOREST) Sat 7 Jun Located at the foot of Kaiserstuhl Mountain on the French-German border, Breisach is the gateway to Germany's Black Forest region, an area of unrivaled natural beauty with its forests of thick pine trees. The area got its name because the forests are so dense that local residents described them as black. Surely the most well-known products from this region are Black Forest ham, Black Forest cherry cake, and cuckoo clocks. After an early breakfast, depart for an excursion into the Black Forest region. Farm visit followed by lunch. Return during the afternoon with a visit to the charming village Colmar. Evening farewell gala dinner. Dinner featuring local foods, and talk on local agricultural production. ( B L D) Florence Day 14 FLORENCE Thu 12 Jun After breakfast, you will be hosted to a guided tour of the city, including the Piazza Del Duomo (cathedral), the Uffizi Gallery and the charming Ponte Vecchio, as well as the Pitti Palace. ( B - -) Florence Day 15 FLORENCE - PISA - NICE Fri 13 Jun Depart after breakfast and travel to Nice in France with a stop en route to see one of the world s most astonishing sights the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Built as a freestanding bell tower (campanile) behind the city cathedral during the 11th and 12th Centuries, the Leaning Tower of Pisa was originally intended to stand vertically, however the tower now leans towards the south-west due to uneven foundations in the loose earth. Travel on to France, a country that seems to have it all, where agriculture plays an important role in the country s economy and the people live from the land, eagerly awaiting the first luscious strawberry or first white asparagus of the season. Arrive in Nice on the French Riviera and take a stroll along the famous Promenade des Anglais on the waterfront. (B-D) Nice Day 16 NICE - AVIGNON Sat 14 Jun After breakfast visit the local market then depart for the drive westwards through the sun-drenched south east region known as Provence. This region is known for its fields of lavender, olive groves and contrasting terrain of plummeting gorges, salt flats and spectacular beaches. The food flavours here are intense with tomatoes, olives, garlic and peppers, the staples of Provencal cuisine. Stop for lunch in a traditional village and visit a typical farm cooperative en route to Avignon, known as the City of Popes. Massive ramparts enclose Avignon and the city is dominated by the huge Palais des Papes where seven official popes and two anti-popes lived, however the city has many other sites to explore. Stop at a winery along the way for an inspection visit to see how fine wines are produced in this region and also visit a Charolais beef operation. Stop for lunch in the beautiful town of Dijon, known for the splendor of its architecture as well as its mustard and gingerbread. Return to Beaune.
