COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT NOTICE OF INTENTION TO DESIGNATE PROVINCIAL HISTORIC RESOURCE (Historical Resources Act) File: Des Notice is hereby given that sixty days from the date of service of this Notice and its publication in the Alberta Gazette, the Minister of Community Development intends to make an Order that the structure known as The Fensala Hall, together with the land legally described as Plan RN21 (XXI), Block 2, Lot 3, excepting thereout all mines and minerals, and municipally located at Markerville, Alberta be designated a Provincial Historic Resource under section 20 of the Historical Resources Act, R.S.A ch-9 as amended. The reasons for the designation are as follows: Fensala Hall, constructed in 1903, is a very good example of a simple Prairie Settlement style of recreational/assembly type facility with a medium or normal front gable housing a central main entrance. In 1920 the hall was enlarged with a small north or rear addition that reflects the original style and design. The historical significance of the site lies in the role that it played in facilitating the preservation and promotion of the Icelandic culture in Alberta throughout the 20 th Century. The site is closely associated with the internationally known Icelandic poet, Stephan G. Stephansson and was important in keeping together the strongly knit Icelandic Community which grew up around Markerville and nearby Hola. Fensala Hall has and continues to be a very important community centre and regional landmark. It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the resource is in the public interest. Dated April 14, Mark Rasmussen, Assistant Deputy Minister. Cultural Facilities and Historical Resources Division. Des Notice is hereby given that sixty days from the date of service of this Notice and its publication in the Alberta Gazette, the Minister of Community Development intends to make an Order that the structure known as The John Snow Residence and Studio, comprised of the residential structure and studio, printing press and historic objects and furnishings that relate directly to the creation and production of John Snow s work, together with the land legally described as Plan 4453L, Block 14, the west 25 feet of Lot 7, and municipally located at th Avenue, S.W., Calgary, Alberta 1126

7 be designated as a Provincial Historic Resource under section 20 of the Historical Resources Act, R.S.A ch-9. The reasons for the designation are as follows: Constructed in 1912, the John Snow house is a modest two-storey wood frame structure which exhibits elements of the shingle style and is typical of local vernacular Calgary buildings of the time. The historical significance of the site lies in its direct association with the internationally recognized artist and lithographer John Snow who resided and produced much of his work there from 1951 to the late 1990s. Snow had served in the armed forces during World War II, and upon his return to Calgary, studied art at the Provincial Institute of Technology. One of his instructors in life drawing was the noted architect and artist Maxwell Bates. After graduation, Snow concentrated on lithography, a pursuit facilitated by the acquisition of two lithographic presses and some limestone blocks from the Western Lithographic and Printing Company in With Bates as his mentor, Snow began to establish a reputation as a fine-art lithographer, and eventually produced 410 pieces, with showings throughout the world. Much of the work was produced in the basement of his home. During , Bates undertook to design a special studio adjoining the house where he and Snow continued to produce their work. Snow s contribution to the Arts in Alberta was profound. Alberta s international reputation as a printmaking centre is, in a large part, due to the pioneering work of John Snow. His contribution to the arts was recognized in 1996 when he was inducted into the Alberta Order of Excellence. It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the resource is in the public interest. Dated April 14, 2003 Mark Rasmussen, Assistant Deputy Minister Cultural Facilities and Historical Resources Division. File: Des Notice is hereby given that sixty days from the date of service of this Notice and its publication in the Alberta Gazette, the Minister of Community Development intends to make an Order that the exterior envelope and the main structural features of the building known as: The Hull Block, together with the land legally described as Plan D, Block 19, Lots 27 and 28, excepting thereout all mines and minerals, and municipally located at Street, Edmonton, Alberta be designated as a Provincial Historic Resource under section 20 of the Historical Resources Act, R.S.A ch-9. The reasons for the designation are as follows: Designed by the architect E.C. Hopkins, the Hull Block was constructed in It is a very good example of the Edwardian Commercial style which was quite common for its time, but for which few examples survive. The exterior of the building retains many of the characteristics of this style such as; tall ground floor retail frontage with large display windows and transom above, continuous lower metal cornice above the store fronts, two floors of commercial frontage with regular repetition of wood double-hung windows, continuous upper metal cornice with dentals, tall parapet with two arched pediments, one on the south facade over the entrance and one in the west facade, four projecting vertical pilasters along the west facade and at the corners of the south facade, solid brick facade 1127

8 construction above the storefronts. The exterior envelope of the building retains a very high degree of its original integrity. The historical significance of the Hull Block lies in its representation of the tremendous commercial growth of downtown Edmonton during the early part of the 20th Century. It is also representative of the kind of commercial structures intended to evoke the ethos of a large office complex, but owing to its central location near a large population, also made to facilitate small retail businesses and apartments dwellers. The Hull Block is the largest and most significant building in the historic Chinatown district of Edmonton and plays a critical role in the maintenance of the character of the historic streetscape. It is a very significant landmark in the McCauley district of Edmonton. It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the resource is in the public interest.
