8 Practical information about Veraldarvinir Worldwide Friends Iceland Veraldarvinir - Worldwide Friends (WF Iceland) was founded in 2001 as a non-profit, non-governmental organization promoting peace, friendship and international understanding. We host short-term voluntary work camps, mid and long-term voluntary projects (3-12 months), seminars (suitable for both young people and adults), youth exchanges, educational programmes and campaigns in Iceland. We also send abroad Icelandic volunteers who wish to have similar experiences. We host and send volunteers through the Youth in action programme our EI number is 2009 ISL 6 Veraldarvinir/WF aims at: Promoting inter-cultural learning, exchange and awareness Preserving Icelandic nature and raising awareness about environmental issues Promoting voluntary work and a culture of volunteering Our headquarters are located at the following address: WF Iceland / Veraldarvinir Hverfisgata Reykjavík Iceland Website: Telephone/ Fax Emergency Phone

9 E mail addresses for placements and all general information about workcamps for accommodation and minibus for other requests Phone numbers and personal addresses Iris Þórarinsdóttir director of Veraldarvinir Antonio Perez social and artistical activities Mariana Smith placement officer Tóti Ivarsson, president of Veraldarvinir iris@veraldarvinir.is antonio@wf.is workcamps@wf.is toti@veraldarvinir.is General information about our International workcamps Age limit: In general, our volunteers should be at least 18 years old. There are no maximum age limits in the majority of our workcamps. The Work: Workcamps usually last two weeks. Working hours are about hours a week (six/seven hours a day, five days a week). Any exceptions are mentioned in the projects descriptions. Accommodation: Local community centres, schools, Youth Centres or other houses owned by the communities. The accommodations are usually in good conditions and include a shared kitchen and bathroom. In some cases we will have to take a shower at the local swimming pool.

10 Food: Food will be provided and volunteers are expected to do their fair share of the cooking/cleaning. Camp Language: English is the language spoken in our camps. Volunteers are required to have a basic intermediate knowledge of the language. Should the camp language be different from English, it will be specified in the work camp description. Camp Leaders: There are always one to two leaders in each camp. They represent the link between the hosting community and the group of volunteers. They coordinate the work, organizes free time activities, plan excursions, shopping and cooking sessions. Apart from these responsibilities, they are equal to the other volunteers. Most of our camp leaders are foreigners and we are very open minded in hosting international leaders from other organizations. Extra Participation Fee: This year we are charging an extra participation fee for our camps. We are still looking for funds and therefore it is possible that some of the fees will be lower than originally specified. We will provide you with updates about these changes in the event they occur. Volunteers are expected to pay the workcamp fee in cash upon their arrival to the camp. WF Iceland charges a participation fee for the following reasons: a. Lack of support from the government and other sources. b. In some of our workcamps WF itself has to supply food which is quite expensive in Iceland compared to other European countries. c. Most of our partner organizations in other countries cover their administration costs through the fees they charge to the volunteers they send abroad. We do not send enough volunteers abroad in order to cover our administrative expenses so we need to charge a participation fee from the volunteers we receive. Insurance: Veraldarvinir provides a basic insurance for the volunteers during the duration of the camp. We strongly recommend that the volunteers who plan to travel beyond these dates purchase a separate insurance. European volunteers should bring the European Health Card (former E111).

11 Some practical matters We highly recommend the volunteers to bring a sleeping bag, basic work clothes, hiking shoes, swimming suits as well as warm and waterproof clothes. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring information about their country, photos, music, songbooks, games, musical instruments, etc. Volunteers with special needs Our camps are open to everyone. If you have volunteers with special needs, please contact us. We will do our very best to find a way to host them. Information Sheets We will send out detailed information sheets with practical information and camp details the same day we accept the volunteers. All our information sheets are also available online. Our website We encourage all our partners and volunteers to check out our website for more information about our projects. There you will find more detailed information, videos and photos from our workcamps. Getting to the campsite Iceland s public transportation is expensive and not very efficient. We will arrange a minibus trip from Reykjavik to the most of our workcamps. The participants can choose the minibus option to reach the workcamp location or traveling independently using public transport (e.g. buses, flights). The minibus fee will be published in the information sheet. However, beware that traveling with our minibus is usually the most convenient option. Exceptions are the destinations near Reykjavik. WF organizes excursions around the South at a very economical price for those heading from Reykjavik to nearby camps. This is a great chance for the volunteers to meet before the camp starts and discover some of Iceland s unknown and less-traveled areas on their way to the camp. Every participant who wishes to take the minibus has to inform us before arriving to Iceland.

12 Workcamps 2010 Iceland

13 Workcamps in Reykjavik and the capital area Project and location: In Reykjavik you can experience easily the pure energy at the heart of Iceland s capital city - whether from the boiling thermal energy underground, the natural green energy within the city and around it. Think of the qualities of a great city - fun, space, clean air, nature, culture - and Reykjavik has them in spades. It has the features of a modern, forward-looking society which are complemented by a close connection to beautiful nature. The population of the Reykjavik Capital Area is about 200,000. Reykjavik is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean on almost all sides. In this time of the year when conditions are favorable you can see the Northern lights (Aurora borealis) glowing curtain of greenish yellow lights, dancing in the distance to a spectacular, multi-colored fusion stretching across the sky. The world s northernmost capital is framed by the majestic Mt. Esja, which keeps a watchful eye on the city, and the blue waters of Faxafloi Bay. On a sunny day, the mystical Snaefellsjokull glacier appears crystal-like on the western horizon, while mountainous moonscapes spread to the southeast.

21 The power of the Runes and the old Viking religion WF ART 8 vol WF ART 8 vol WF ART 8 vol WF ART 8 vol WF ART 8 vol WF ART 8 vol WF ART 8 vol WF ART 8 vol During this project we will collect volcanic stones from specific places in Iceland where nature has shaped and made really beautiful magic stones, afterwards we will convert them into runes in our workshop in Reykjavik. There are different places around Iceland where we can collect the stones. We will explain to the volunteers the history of those places and the importance of the healing energy from the stones. We will visit the following places: Snæfellsnes, where you can find the glacier Snæfellsjökull which is famous for the power and energy that many spiritually-minded people sense. It is said to be one of the seven greatest energy centres of the earth. Reynisfjara, the black beach of Vik which is without a doubt the most beautiful beach in Iceland. 23 Viking festival in Hafnarfjörður WF FEST / MANU/ CULT 15 vol Project and location: Hafnarfjörður is a town with a population of people. It is located 10 km away from Iceland's capital, Reykjavík. Hafnarfjörður (harbor fjord) is named after its natural harbor. The town is first mentioned in the medieval "Book of Settlements," and the earliest reports of voyages to Hafnarfjörður date back to the end of the 14th century. Today, Hafnarfjörður is one of the nation s largest fishing centres and the site of Iceland s first fish wholesale auction market. The town is famous for having one of Iceland s largest settlements of elves, dwarves and the so-called Hidden Folk. Centuriesold folklore has it that whole clans of such beings reside in the rocks that make up part of the town s centre. We do not doubt this at all. Though elves are visible only to those with second sight, many Icelanders believe in their existence. Indeed, there are many stories to support this belief and reports of cases where the construction of new roads or housing developments were hindered by strange happenings abound. Hidden Folk are highly respected all over Iceland, especially in Hafnarfjördur. There is even a Hidden Worlds tour that takes to their home sites, including Hellisgerði Park and the base of the cliff Hamarinn, which is said to be home to the Royal Family of the Hidden Folk. Along the way, the guide relates ancient folk tales of the magical hidden worlds and narrates how the town developed in harmony with the Hidden Folk. For more information take a look at: The Vikings settled in Iceland around the year 874 A.D. and Icelanders are very proud of the brave people who dared starting a new life here, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The work camp will take place I a small Viking village in Hafnarfjörður. This tiny village is built around the Viking restaurant owned by local people. The festival is a project supported by the city council of Hafnarfjörður but the owners of the restaurant are also the founders and organizers of the festival.

Additional information can be found online at: Work: The volunteers will help with the preparation before the festival and afterwards help the organizers to run the festival. Our host is the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic which is a part of the Nature Health Association of Iceland located in Hveragerdi. The Clinic is a place of choice for all those who are in need of rehabilitation, regaining their strength or simply in need to rest. It has earned a solid reputation, both in Iceland and internationally, since its foundation in 1955 for personal and effective care of patients. 43 Eldfell the volcano in Vestmanneyjar WF ENVI 10 vol WF ENVI 12 vol Project and location: The Westman Islands consist in a group of fifteen beautiful islands which are situated at a short distance off the south coast of Iceland. They are so named because the Nordic settlers in the country called the Irish after which the islands are named after "westmen" (=the men from the west). All the islands have been created in submarine volcanic eruptions during comparatively recent geological time. The colorful town, the beautiful bird-cliffs, the new lava and volcano and the landscape in general give the islands a scenic interest as varied in character as any in the country. Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island in the group and is Iceland s longest off shore island with an area of 13,4 sq. km. Fishing and fish processing and subsidiary trades are the main source of income. Heimaey is sheltered to the north by low mountains and the imposing bird-life Heimaklettur, which protects the narrow cove at the end of which the harbour lies. Eldfell is a composite volcanic cone just over 200 metres high. It was formed in a huge volcanic eruption - the name means Mountain of Fire in Icelandic. This volcanic eruption is considered the largest natural disaster in Iceland in recent history. The eruption begun on January 23rd 1973 on the island of Heimaey, after the evacuation of the inhabitants, and during the 5 months while the eruption lasted, there was much uncertainty as to whether or not the island could ever be repopulated. The eruption, the destruction of a large part of the town, and the changed landscape of this tiny island made world news and when it was over, tourists and scientists alike from all over the world visited the island to witness the fury and the results of nature's forces.

44 Now more than 30 years have passed and the memories and signs of that spectacular natural fury are somewhat fading, but the lava and ash of the eruption silently covers almost 400 homes and buildings, a third of the town in Work: The volunteers will help the locals to preserve the Volcano Eldfell and fight the erosion. Heimaey is sheltered to the north by low mountains and the imposing bird-life Heimaklettur, which protects the narrow cove at the end of which the harbour lies. visit for more information. Now more than 30 years have passed and the memories and signs of that spectacular natural fury are somewhat fading, but the lava and ash of the eruption silently covers almost 400 homes and buildings, a third of the town in 1973.

71 Neskaupstaður WF ENVI / MANU 10 vol WF ENVI / MANU 12 vol WF ENVI / MANU 13 vol Project and location: Neskaupstaður is a medium size town by Icelandic standards. With its inhabitants, it has the largest population in the East Fjords. The town has been growing and prospering since the early 1900 s and is almost completely self sufficient thanks to the fishing industry. Nestled in the middle of nowhere, the town has all the necessary facilities and stores: a bakery, local dairy products, supermarkets, banks, a post office, a school, sports hall, a swimming pool, a church, a hospital, the harbor, a airstrip, a hotel, a jazz club, a rescue centre, etc. In fact, it seems to have all the services you would expect in a larger town, all but an optician! On the east side of town a wildlife reserve and recreational area face the ocean. In the lower section of the reserve, called Hagi, lies the famous Páskahellir (Easter Cave), a rock vault over the shore. Holes left by thick, 10 to 12-million-year-old tree trunks may be seen inside the vault and, in the best Icelandic tradition, various folk tales are associated with the cave. Neskaupstaður can be reached only by driving through a one-way tunnel. Fjarðabyggð is an association of different communities in Icelandös Eastfjords. It includes the towns of Eskifjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður, Mjóifjörður, Neskaupstaður, Reyðarfjörður and Stöðvarfjörður. They are all small fishing villages with steep mountains towering just behind the houses. In this area you will see some of the features that make Iceland a unique place on earth: spectacular fjords with a rich sea life, a great variety of birdlife, and countless breathtaking hiking paths. You will explore the area during your stay in the east. Our tasks will depend on the general situation in Fjarðabyggð, the working site of this camp. Work: During this camp we will mainly help cleaning and beautifying the town and its surroundings. We will also continue collecting waste on the shores, planting trees, weeding and building hiking paths. Other tasks might also involve doing some repair work at a nearby community centre which will host the volunteer groups arriving later in the summer. The work will depend on weather conditions and that s why we have to be flexible. Please, keep in mind that the work might be physically hard and you should be prepared for rough and unfriendly weather, even though, hopefully, it will be nice most of the time.

80 Lunga in Seyðisfjörður - Art festival for young people WF20 07/07 21/07 20 vols ART/FEST Project and location: The long, calm, deep fjord of Seyðisfjörður twists and turns for 17 kilometres from its mouth to the end of the fjord, where the town by the same name finds shelter under Mt. Strandartindur and Mt. Bjólfur. In the valley above, the river Fjarðará falls from the edge of the heath above in innumerable beautiful waterfalls, down to Lón (the lagoon) at the end of the fjord. A road starts at the fjord and runs along the river until the Hérað district, 26 kilometres away, across the Fjarðarheiði heath. Once a hazardous place to travel, today the heath can be crossed in just half-hour on a pleasant and scenic road. The route (Stafirnir) that goes down into Seyðisfjörður by the Fjarðará river, is one of Iceland's most spectacular roads. For more information, see: Lunga is an art-festival for young people.
