Natural harbours depict postcard-like fishing villages and seemingly never-ending roads cross the region, providing beautiful views. "Fjarðabyggð" is an association of villages in the Eastern fjords of Iceland. It includes the towns of Eskifjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður, Mjóifjörður, Neskaupstaður, Reyðarfjörður and Stöðvarfjörður, all tiny fishing villages with steep mountains towering just behind the houses. In this area you will see some of the features that make Iceland a unique place in the world: spectacular fjords with a rich sea life, a great variety of birdlife and countless breathtaking hiking paths. You will explore the area during your stay in the east. Work: The main task of the camp is to remove the Alaskan lupine from certain areas where other plants are growing. The lupine is not a native plant in Iceland, but it was imported into the country to help prevent erosion in areas where almost nothing grows. The lupine is now overrunning native species in many areas, so it is very important to control it. The group will also do other environmental work, if needed. Our work will also depend on weather conditions, which is why we have to be flexible. You should be prepared for unfriendly weather, but hopefully, it will be nice most of the time. This is a perfect camp for people who like outdoor work and physical challenges. Working hours are about 6 hours a day. Leisure time: Worldwide Friends volunteers have free access to the local geothermal-heated swimming pool in Eskifjörður. Traditionally, natural pools have played an important social role in Icelandic culture. Most Icelandic pools offer indoor and outdoor swimming, as well as hot tubs and saunas or steam rooms. The area in the east is also good for hiking, so please bring your hiking shoes. WF Iceland will organise reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs. We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture in an informal way. It can be a presentation, a game, theatre the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers. This workcamp gives you the opportunity to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge with each other while exploring creativity, environmental issues and intercultural learning. Accommodation and food: Volunteers will be staying in the WF house in Eskifjordur. Beds and sheets are provided, however, everyone is asked to bring their own warm sleeping bags and towels. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge. Food is included for the duration of the workcamp, however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favourite recipes from home. Language: A basic knowledge of is required for this workcamp. Terminal: Intl. Keflavík (KEF), Reykjavík. The closest national airport is Egilsstaðir airport, which is located 40 km from the camp location. Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik. WF Iceland will offer a minibus trip from Reykjavik to the east for a fair price (180 for the round trip which is almost 1,400 km in total). On the way to the camp we will drive through the south to the east of the island. After the camp, we will drive through the north and west to Reykjavik, if the road conditions are favourable. This trip includes unique Icelandic sights, such as glacial lagoons, waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava fields, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs. Additional information: There is an extra participation fee of 180 euros for this workcamp. Página 1 de 15

This friendly little community sits on top of a highly active geothermal field, which provides heat for hundreds of greenhouses where fruit, flowers and vegetables are produced throughout the year. Even bananas grow in these greenhouses! The name Hveragerði means hot springs garden. Geothermal energy is Hveragerði s lifeblood, and you probably won t find such a natural wonder in the middle of a populated area anywhere else in the world. Nearby you will find an even more geothermally active site: Gufudalur, the lovely Steam Valley behind the town. This whole valley is full of hot springs, geysers, mud pots, fumaroles and steaming vents. Our host is a non-profit organisation called the NLFI Rehabilitation and Health Clinic, which is a part of the Natural Health Association of Iceland. Every year approximately 2,000 patients and other guests enjoy their diverse rehabilitation programs, which are focused on an approach that builds self-confidence and personal responsibility for the patients own health. The clinic has earned a solid reputation, both in Iceland and internationally, since its foundation in 1955 for personal and effective care of patients. It is one of the two most important rehabilitation clinics in Iceland. In the last years this ongoing camp has been the most popular camp in our organisation. Work: The Natural Health Association has a horticultural and environmental department, including forestry, gardening, and greenhouses, which is where Worldwide Friends volunteers work most of the time. Volunteers will help with growing the tomatoes, cucumbers and making tea made of Icelandic herbs and also do some environmental work around the property. The nature of the work depends largely on weather conditions, which can change quickly. Volunteers should bring clothes appropriate for outdoor work, but also clothes for working inside the warm greenhouses. Working hours are usually from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and volunteers will have a one-hour lunch break. Leisure: Worldwide Friends volunteers have free access to the local geothermally-heated swimming pool. Traditionally, natural pools have played an important social role in Icelandic culture. Most Icelandic pools offer indoor and outdoor swimming, as well as hot tubs and saunas or steam rooms. Hveragerði is known for having great areas for hiking, including the hot river in Reykjadalur. WF Iceland will also organise reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights, such as glacial lagoons, waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, geysers, lava forests, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs. Accommodation and food: Worldwide Friends volunteers will be staying in a fully equipped bungalow consisting of several double bedrooms and a living room. Volunteers need to bring their own sleeping bag, but beds and sheets are provided. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge. All meals are provided and cooked by our hosts, the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic. The menu for the project is primarily vegetarian, but two times a week it includes locally-caught fish. The food at the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic is known throughout Iceland for its high quality. The standard of food and accommodation does not get better than in this camp. Language: A basic knowledge of is required for this workcamp. Terminal: Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik, Iceland. WF Iceland will offer a minibus trip from Reykjavik to Hveragerdi for 60 euros, which includes the Golden Circle South Iceland excursion and the return trip back to Reykjavik. Additional information: There is an extra participation fee of 180 euros for this workcamp. Página 7 de 15

If you want to see the most famous or up-and-coming musicians in Iceland, then this is the camp for you. The Westman Islands consist of a group of fifteen islands, which are situated within a short distance off the south coast of Iceland. They are named after the Nordic settlers in the country, namely the Irish, which is why they are called the "westmen" (the men from the west). All islands were created in submarine volcanic eruptions during a comparatively recent geological time period. The colourful town, the beautiful bird cliffs, the new lava and volcanoes and the landscape in general give the islands a scenic interest as varied in character as any in the country. Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island in the group and Iceland s longest off-shore island with an area of 13.4 km2. Fishing, fish processing and subsidiary trades are the main source of income. Heimaey is sheltered in the north by low mountains and the imposing birdlife of Heimaklettur, which protects the narrow cove at the end of which the harbour lies. The festival: On the first weekend of August, Icelanders celebrate the 1874 grant of Icelandic sovereignty with a huge festival in the town on Heimaey. The celebration takes place in a tent city in Herjolfsdalur, west of the town, where an extended weekend of bonfires, dance and song takes place with the most famous bands in Iceland entertaining the guests. This festival is the most popular one in Iceland. Work: Volunteers will help keep the festival area clean. They will work 4 to 5 hours a day, after which they will have free time enjoy this amazing festival, which is number one in Iceland when it comes to culture and music. Leisure time: Free access to the local swimming pool. Free access to all festival activities. Accommodation and food: Worldwide Friends volunteers will be staying in a community centre in Heimaey, offering basic facilities. Participants are asked to bring their own warm sleeping bags and mats. Food will be provided for the duration of the workcamp, however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favourite recipes from home! Language: A basic knowledge of is required for this workcamp. Terminal: Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik, Iceland. WF Iceland will offer a minibus trip from Reykjavik to the camp and back for 110 euros, which includes the Golden Circle South Iceland excursion and the ferry trip to the island. Additional information: There is an extra participation fee of 180 euros for this camp. Página 12 de 15

Powered by heat from the earth below, with ever-changing weather sweeping across the landscape, its natural features are matched by the energy of its residents. Think of the denominators of a great city - fun, culture, nature, clean air - Reykjavik has them in spades. All the advantages of a modern, forwardlooking society are complemented by the beautiful natural setting. In a country of only just over 300,000 people, the Reykjavik Capital Area has a population of about 200,000. However, since it s the only major city in the country, Reykjavik has a lot of the amenities that you would only expect to find in a much larger centre elsewhere in the world. Reykjavik is the world s northernmost capital city and is centred on the Seltjarnarnes Peninsula. Reykjavik is framed by the majestic Mt. Esja and the blue waters of Faxafloi Bay to the north, while rugged lava-fields spread to the southeast. On a clear sunny day, the Snaefellsjökull glacier glitters on the western horizon like a crystal. The Gay Pride festival in Reykjavík will take place in the last days of the workcamp on 6-11 August. During those days, Reykjavík is full of life. A huge, merry and colourful gay parade will take place at the centre of town, followed by a grand outdoor concert attended by over seventy thousand people lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender and straight people, friends, relatives, fellow citizens and numerous foreign visitors showing solidarity for the gay cause. Please see information on Work: The work related to the festival will mostly be helping the organizers with the preparation of the festival and some manual/environmental work in green areas. The group can also prepare their own event for the parade which is the highlight of the Gay pride every year. We would also appreciate if the group could take photos and write short articles about the different parts of the event. Leisure: On weekends, the volunteers can enjoy Reykjavik s amazing nightlife, which is world-renowned for its wide array of bars, clubs, and concerts. Accommodation and food: Worldwide Friends volunteers will be staying in a house offering basic sleeping and cooking facilities. Volunteers need to bring their own sleeping bag and towels, but beds and bed linens are provided. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge. The accommodation provided by Worldwide Friends Iceland for volunteers in Reykjavik is located within a 25-minute walking distance of many urban amenities, including: banks, pharmacies, supermarkets, public swimming pools, restaurants, cafes, libraries, theatres, shops, museums and bus stations. Food is included for the duration of the workcamp, however, everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favourite recipes from home! Terminal: Flights arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), just south of Reykjavik, Iceland. WF Iceland will offer a minibus trip from the meeting point of the camp to the accommodation for 60 euros, which includes the Golden Circle South Iceland excursion. Additional information: There is an extra participation fee of 250 Euros for this workcamp. Página 13 de 15

Reykjavik Culture Night has become an essential part of cultural life in Iceland with thousands of people strolling down the streets of the city on this exciting and eventful night. Culture Night offers a chance to enjoy a variety of activities ranging from traditional shows and exhibitions to more unusual happenings. A number of cultural institutions, such as galleries, ateliers, shops, cafes, churches, restaurants and bars in downtown of Reykjavik stay open late. The immensely popular Reykjavik Marathon takes place on the same day and we encourage our volunteers to participate. Work: On 19 August, we will take part in Reykjavik Culture Night, performing in the streets and enjoying Iceland s biggest cultural event. Every year WF Iceland hosts hundreds of international volunteers participating in projects all around the island. WF Iceland publishes a magazine called UNA, where people can read about the life of the organisation. In the beginning of the project, volunteers will receive an introduction about the tasks - afterwards we will choose a topic for the newsletter. This is a great opportunity to step into different projects and get to know Reykjavik even better. The group will take photos, create videos and conduct interviews with volunteers, local hosts and people living in the area. The outcome will be published in the UNA WF magazine. At the end of the project, we will prepare the final version of the magazine and publish it online. Leisure: On weekends, the volunteers can enjoy Reykjavik s amazing nightlife, which is world-renowned for its wide array of bars, clubs, and concerts. WF Iceland will also organise reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer.
