4 Description: Ter Dennen is a Red Cross centre for asylum seekers. After arrival in Belgium, refugees are sent to a centre where they receive food and shelter. Ter Dennen is a quite isolated place in a green surrounding. Around 218 refugees from over 20 countries stay there, of which 70 are children and youngsters. Since a lot of people from different backgrounds live together there and the asylum procedure is not always successful, life in the centre is not always easy. Type of Work: You are going to organize activities for people staying in the asylum centre. These activities might be for children, youngster, adults or for the whole group. What we are going to do depends entirely on your motivation and creativity, so your ideas are more than welcome! Keep in mind that people staying in Ter Dennen are passing a very difficult time and it s in our hands to make their lives a bit brighter. Therefore we expect you to be very motivated.you will work 5 days a week and have free weekends. It s up to you how you will spend these. Study Theme: Besides the work itself, a study part is foreseen. The director of the centre will tell you how the centre works and provide you with a basic idea concerning Belgian procedures for asylum seekers. We will also discuss advantages and disadvantages of these procedures. However depth of the information session will of course depend on you as well - on how much interest in this issue comes from the group itself Accommodation: You will sleep in 2 large sleeping rooms in the centre itself. Beds and bed sheets are provided. Good news is that you do not have to cook. We will eat together with inhabitants of the centre. In case you are a vegetarian, please let us know in advance! Language: You should know that you are coming to Flanders, north part of Belgium, where Flemish (= Dutch) is the official language! But don t worry, we do not expect you to speak Dutch. The camp language will be English, though any other languages such as body language or music is also possible. Requirements: Prepare for warm, sunny as well as for cold, rainy weather, Belgium is unpredictable!!! Approximate Location: Food and sleeping place are provided by the project, so the only money you will need is some pocket money for activities in the weekend. Please, keep in mind that the centre is practically in the middle of nowhere, so it will be difficult to go out for a drink in the evening! (The centre will provide some bicycles that can be used during the camp) Notes: When to arrive? It is best to arrive before 5 pm. If this is not possible, please contact the Red Cross centre and inform them about your arrival time.
