LOCATION: The West Fjords are among the most breathtakingly beautiful places in Iceland, with its high mountains and dramatic fjords cutting deep into the landscape. The Lonely Planet travel guide put the area on its top 10 list of regions in the world to visit in Tálknafjörður is located in the southern Westfjords; it is one of three communities in the southwestern area of the Westfjords. Tálknafjörður is a fishing village that rests on the 15 km long and nearly 4 km wide bay, also called Tálknafjörður. The mountains drop steep into the bay, the lowland stretches are small and narrow and short valleys cut into the interior plateau. Thermal activity has been discovered in a few places and is used for house heating and a swimming pool in the village. The town of Tálknafjörður is quite remove, the distance to Ísafjörður, the largest city in the West Fjords, is 161 km and the distance to Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland is 403 km. The closest town is Patreksfjörður, just 18 km away. In number of inhabitants is only about 275 people and about two thirds of the people are employed in a local fishing company. The nature in the area is untouched and almost uninhabited. The cliffs and valleys are packed with birds, the uninhabited fjords offer a moment of silence and tranquility, and the Arctic fox proudly roams the mountains and inlets. The waterfalls are high and the streams pure. The distances are long and the fjords are deep. And then there are places where there are no roads at all. The aim of the project is to make an outdoor art exhibition, a geo-park, an art-residence, and a chapel for all types of religions. Volunteers will help with various outdoors tasks such as building a stone wall in a garden with sculptures and outdoor artwork. The volunteers will be supervised by a professional stonewall maker and a nature scientist. Furthermore volunteers will make a walking path from the sculpture garden towards a small canyon where some outdoor artwork can be found. Volunteers will also help with setting up and moving the artwork. Our host is taking the first steps towards making a Geo-park and volunteers will help with marking and registering locations and other related tasks. If time and weather allows, volunteers will help building a chapel which is aimed to be for all religions and beliefs. Volunteers may also take down old fences and generally beautify the area. The working plan will depend on the needs of our local host and the volunteers need motivation to work mainly outdoors on physical jobs and under changeable weather conditions. ACCOMMODATION: SEEDS volunteers will stay in a local house; sleeping in shared rooms on mattresses in a sleeping bag accommodation. Please bring your own sleeping bag. Volunteers receive food supplies and are mostly in charge of the cooking and cleaning activities. Do not forget some traditional/typical food from your home country for an international evening. LOCATION: The project takes place in the western part of Iceland, in a unique natural pearl with breath taking landscape, between glaciers and lava fields. The place is like an oasis in the desert, as the weather is often better than in the surroundings. The place is ideal for hikers as walking paths and trails spread in all directions, beautiful waterfalls and one of the best known caves in Iceland is nearby. Every weekend there is a bonfire in the nearby camping area where visitors meet, sing, play games and enjoy the company. Among the natural wonders nearby are the Hraunfossar waterfalls; where water comes out from a lava field over a length of 1 km. Additionally, the Hallmundarhraun lava field is among the best known and deepest in Iceland. According to some of the oldest Icelandic sagas, this area is said to be inhabited since the very early settlement of the island. Dense forests, lava, water springs and torrential glacier rivers, mixed with a diverse fauna and flora makes this area a delightful place to stay. In the area there are some small local services, including a convenience store, a swimming pool with Jacuzzis, a pit-stop joint with a gas station and a small restaurant. The project is locaed close to Langjökull (Long Glacier), the second largest glacier in Iceland, it is 950 km2 and its highest point is 1355 m above sea level. 30 Página 3 de 52

The aim of the project is to raise awareness about whale protection in a friendly and peaceful manner. The tasks of the project mainly consists of distributing information, conducting a survey, having people sign a protection petition that will be taken to the government at the end of the work camp, talking to people and having fun in Reykjavík! Volunteers will also be given the opportunity to prepare and carry out acts or actions to grab attention and entertain passers-by. We encourage each volunteer to come prepared with some ideas of awareness rising for this project, to discuss them with the group and try to implement them. SEEDS is looking for enthusiastic and open people for this workcamp. Volunteers have to be ready to approach people on the street and start conversations with them. Volunteers with passion for animal and environment protection are encouraged to apply as the work can become a bit repetitive. Our goal is to raise awareness among tourists (and locals) that by tasting whale meat in Icelandic restaurants they encourage whaling. The truth is that most Icelanders have never tasted whale meat but with increasing tourism, local restaurants are increasingly including whale meat on their menu as an exotic treat for tourists. Iceland was one of the first countries in the world to ban commercial whaling. We can help Iceland to make a positive decision again, by educating the growing number of people who eat up to 40% of the whale meat consumed in the country, but at the same time say they are against whaling. ACCOMMODATION: SEEDS volunteers will stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are fairly basic and volunteers are expected to show consideration for their fellow camp mates. Volunteers will sleep in shared rooms in a sleeping bag accommodation. Please bring your own sleeping bag. Volunteers will receive food supplies and be in charge of the cooking and cleaning activities. Do not forget some traditional/typical food from your home country for the international evening. LOCATION: The camp is located in Reykjavik, Europe's most northern capital, a friendly and vibrant city that manages to combine the intimacy of a small-town atmosphere with all the qualities of a modern, trendy city. Here you can leisurely stroll around the lovely little streets of the town centre with its many renovated old houses and there's no hustle and bustle. The visitor to Reykjavik is simply spoiled when it comes to things to do. There is the National Gallery and a range of other small avant-garde galleries for the art lover. The National Museum provides an exciting insight into Iceland's history and heritage, as does the Arbaer Folk Museum, which is an open-air museum with a collection of old Icelandic houses and artifacts. It is located in the eastern part of Melrakkasletta close to the Arctic Circle. The population of Raufarhöfn is about 200 and most of the people there earn their living from fishing and fish processing. The harbor is very beautiful and partly shaped by nature itself. A wide and untouched open area surrounds the village with a lot of birds and varied vegetation. In summer one will observe wild migratory birds within the village being a part of the village life with the villagers most often waking up in the morning to the songs of birds. The coastline with its inlets and creeks is filled with driftwood and reaches out into the Arctic Sea. Away and on the surface of the sea various sea-birds will be spotted and an occasional seal. On the beach waders strut and inland on the grassy moorlands there are dozens of lakes filled with trout. In the vicinity many species of ducks, waders and species that favor heaths and moorlands may be observed. Work: This camp is about renovation, painting, cleaning and fixing things around the WF house. Raufarhofn is a very isolated place and in the same time very magical. We will work about 6 hours a day in order to make our house in the North a much better place to live. the house is old and we been using it in the last 4 years very much so it is the right time to renovate the place and give it a nice new look. Raufarhofn is a place full of energy and amazing landscapes. This is the right place to enjoy your free time taking photos and having walks around the coast line. For sure children and Youth from the village will very interesting to get to know you and take part in some of our cultural dinners or even workshops which we can develop if volunteers are happy and dynamic enough. If the weather allow us we will also work in cleaning the coast line around the town of Raufarhofn. Picking up garbage and making a better and cleaner place at least one or two days during the camp. This work camp is a way to enjoy an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge with each other while they are exploring creativity, environmental issues and intercultural learning. Leisure: There is few easy things to do in leisure time in Raufarhofn. There you can walk (about 18 km go and back) to the light house which is the most North Eastern point of Iceland. The line of the Arctic Circle frame that area of Iceland closing the water of Atlantic Ocean and opening the gates to the Greenlandic Sea. After having made the walk you can get a certificate in the local Hotel which confirms you visit to the Arctic Circle. Another positive thing about Raufarhofn especially if you like birds is that the village becomes a migrant birds nest giving so much life to the place. Raufarhofn is the Icelandic tundra, full of black and blue berries during the season. If you are volunteering while the berries season is taking place you will have the opportunity to make your own jam, brownies, cake and other delicious meals based on wild berries. Also the tundra area is full of lakes where fishing is easy to do and free as well. We will have some small fishing equipment to try to get some 30 Página 19 de 52

If you want to see the most famous musicians in Iceland or the once that are becoming famous than this is the good c amp for you. The Westman Islands consist in a group of fifteen islands which are situated at a short distance off the south coast of Iceland. They are so named because the Nordic settlers in the country called the Irish after which the islands are named after "westmen" (=the men from the west). All the islands have been created in submarine volcanic eruptions during comparatively recent geological time. The colourful town, the beautiful bird-cliffs, the new lava and volcano and the landscape in general give the islands a scenic interest as varied in character as any in the country. Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island in the group and is Iceland s longest off shore island with an area of 13,4 sq. km. Fishing and fish processing and subsidiary trades are the main source of income. Heimaey is sheltered to the north by low mountains and the imposing bird-life Heimaklettur, which protects the narrow cove at the end of which the harbour lies. The festival: On the first weekend of August, Icelanders celebrate the 1874 grant of Icelandic sovereignty with a huge festival in the town on Heimaey. The population moves into a tent city in the Herjolfsdalur, a short distance west of town, for an extended weekend of bonfires, dance, and song. The most famious bands in Iceland are usually entertaining the guests. This festival is the most popular one in Iceland. Work: The volunteers will help to keep the festival area clean, the work will last for 4 to 5 hours a day but the rest of the time the volunteers can enjoy this amazing festival which is the number one in Iceland when it comes to culture and music. Leisure time: Free access to the local swimming pool. Free access to all what is happening in the Festival Accommodation & Food: In the community and sport center of Heimaey offering basic facilities. Participants are asked to bring their own warm sleeping bags and mats. The food will be provided for the duration of the workcamp and everyone is expected to do their fair part of the cooking/cleaning.
