SustainDustry: Go green or go home Survival Guide 1-8 July 2018 Reykjavik
Intro This is the Survival Guide for the summer course in Reykjavík 2018 SustainDustry: Go green or go home. It contains all the necessary and unnecessary information that you will need to survive on the island with 15 active volcanoes, waterfalls, 800 hot springs, square km of glaciers, puffins, erupting geysers and midnight sun. The course is organized by LBG Reykjavik and held in Reykjavik. Simply remember: respect the moss, listen to the elves, learn new things and have the BEST experience of our culture and country.
General Information Location The course will be held at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik, which is located near the city center. All the academic sessions will take place in lecture rooms within the university. You ll be staying in our university s sports hall, right next to the main building. Food We will provide three meals a day, as well as some snacks in between. Please let us know if you are a vegetarian or allergic to something so preparations can be made regarding meals. Before you leave Before leaving your home country be completely sure that you have - A TRAVEL PLAN: Let us know when you plan to arrive and depart, by filling in the spreadsheet we ll have posted in the Facebook group - A VISA: Please contact us if you need an official invitation letter to our course, either for your visa application or home university. We ll provide you with one. You can make sure whether you need a visa or not by using these two links, or contact us and we will help you.
How to get here We ll take a wild guess that you decide to arrive by plane (a guess that isn t based on any geographical data). Iceland has one international airport, Keflavik airport, which is located less than an hour from Reykjavik. Since there are no trains in Iceland, the most preferred method of travel from the airport is the Flybus ( ). You can buy tickets for the Flybus through the website and also at the airport. The bus ride costs 2700 ISK (21.5 EUR). The bus will take you to BSÍ, the main bus station. Just stay on the bus until it comes to a complete stop and everyone else gets out. Almost everyone speaks English so don't hesitate to ask someone for help!
Way to accommodation Once you arrive at main bus station there are two options: 1. Taking a nice and pleasant 15 minute walk to the accommodation. 2. Taking the bus (1, 3, 6 or 12). The bus stop is right outside the BSÍ bus terminal. If you have any trouble finding the accommodation, please don t be shy to give us a call!
What to bring with you Plane tickets Passport Insurance (very important! +contact info for the insurance company) Medicine - if you need any Money and/or credit cards Our contact information Sleeping bag and a pillow (we provide mattresses but not pillows or duvets) Warm clothes and sturdy shoes we get all kinds of weather Nicer clothes for the official opening Raincoat, good sweaters and warm socks are a must Swimming gear and towel Hygiene items Traditional drinks and food from your home country for the international evening Flag from your country Eye mask, it will be bright all night! Good sense of humour, heart full of adventure, happy thoughts and the BEST spirit!!!
About Iceland Climate...if you don t like the weather, wait 5 minutes Iceland is an island in the middle of North Atlantic ocean. We are able to survive here only due to the fact that Iceland has about 3 times more sheep than humans so in winter we cuddle with our sheep to keep us warm. Another not so important reason is the Gulf stream that warms up the island. The weather is known for its quick temper and sudden changes. Which means that we have to be prepared for everything (as well as a sudden eruption of a volcano). So please bring your warm jackets, rain coats, plenty of warm socks, anything to keep you warm and isolated from the mighty wind. Average temperature in July is 12 C, but it can range anywhere from 5-15 C during the day. If you want to see our weather in action visit en.vedur.is.
Iceland Iceland is a volcanic island located in the North Atlantic Ocean, 300 km east of Greenland and 900 km west of Norway. The main island, which lies south of the Arctic Circle, covers an area of 103,000 km 2, which is slightly bigger than Ireland. Over 10 percent of Iceland s territory is covered by glaciers, which includes Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe. Iceland has a population of 340,000, of which two thirds live in the capital area. 85% of Iceland s primal energy comes from renewable energy, with more than three quarters of its energy consumption derived from hydroelectric & geothermal sources. Iceland is a country of extreme geological contrasts. Widely known as The Land of Fire and Ice, Iceland is home to some of the largest glaciers in Europe, and some of the world s most active volcanoes. Iceland is also the land of light and darkness. Long summer days with near 24-hours of sunshine are offset by short winter days with only a few hours of daylight. Eyjafjallajökull Glacier
Reykjavík Reykjavík, or if we translate it to English: Smoky Bay, is the world s northernmost capital and it is home to colourful houses, overwhelming nature and friendly people who are all related to each other. Reykjavík has a lot to offer: amazing outdoor thermal swimming pools, beautiful churches and streets full of modern art. Reykjavík is a relatively small city where you can bump into someone you know at any time. All Icelandic nightlife is located at one place, mainly at one street called Laugavegur. The University of Iceland is our oldest and largest university which was founded in 1911, providing instruction for students every year. It was founded by Alþingi, our national parliament. Alþingi is one of the oldest parliaments in the world and was founded in 930 at a place called Þingvellir (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Laugavegur Prices Iceland is one of the most expensive countries in Europe. So if you need any essential items such as toothpaste or a toothbrush just buy it in your home country or at the airport. I can promise you the price in our stores will be 3-4 times higher. Looking at this list makes us sad too, but hopefully it will help you out a little bit :) (Later on we can all complain about prices in Iceland together) Pizza EUR Beer 0,5l (store) EUR Beer 0,5l (bar) EUR Chocolate bar EUR Coke 0,5L.. 2 EUR Cigarette pack.. 10 EUR Hot Dog EUR Small Subway EUR
The Icelandic language Iceland has been isolated from the entire world until quite recently. The Icelandic language hasn t evolved much in the last millennium and is similar to Old Norse which was spoken in all of Scandinavia in the 10-13th century. If you want to learn some helpful phrases and names of beautiful places take a look at the list and the picture Hello.. Hæ Hello beautiful.. Hæ sæta/i How are you?.. Hvað segirðu? Good day.. Góðan daginn I m lost.. Ég er týnd/ur How much is it?.. Hvað kostar þetta? One beer please.. Einn bjór takk Thank you.. Takk Window-weather.. Gluggaveður Policeman.. Lögregluþjónn Help.. Hjálp Alþjóðaflutningaverkamannasambandið.. International Transport Workers' Federation
Fun Facts Beer was banned in Iceland until March 1st 1989 Some Icelanders believe in elves and trolls. Certain roads have been rerouted to avoid disturbing areas where elves are living. Hekla is Iceland's most active volcano; Hekla is sometimes called the gate to hell. It s also a common female name in Iceland! In the telephone book everyone is listed by their first name. In 1980, Icelanders elected Vigdís Finnbogadóttir for president, making her the first woman to be democratically elected as head of state. Our former prime minister, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, was the first openly lesbian head of government in the world.
