San Diego, CA Phone: (858) info@backyardxscapes.com 31 Before You Begin IMPORTANT!: Thatch panes must be instaed on a soid surface structure, or sheathing, such as a pywood deck over rafters (NOT spaced or skip sheathing). Waterproofing materia, or underayment, must aso be instaed over the soid seathing, as the Thatch Panes do not provide any protection from the rain. Common Underayment Exampes: Roofing fet, sometimes caed tar paper, usuay comes in two weights, 15 b. and 30 b. Insta over seathing using nais or stapes to provide weather protection. IceShied is another option, simiar to roofing fet but has a pee-away backing to adhere directy to the seathing. Toos Required a. Hammer and/or Stape Gun b. Tape Measure c. Marker d. Razor e. Shear cutters f. Protective Eye Wear Materias Required a. Waterproof Underayment b. Nais/Stapes (Gavanized, 1 ½ ) NOTE: Pease read through the entire instruction manua before instaation. 1

2 Gabe Roof Instaation NOTE: Remember, insta thatch panes over soid roof sheathing (such as pywood deck), preferaby on a 30 degree pitched roof. A Insta waterproof underayment of your choice over the soid roof. NOTE: Thatch panes do not provide any waterproofing capabiity. B Begin the starter row with a hafpane (this creates a stagger so pane seams are not on top of each other). The overhang on the eave shoud be about 1/2 or 3/4, and aow a overhang at the bottom. C Insta the haf-pane using about 4-5 roofing nais or stapes through the brown pastic band across the top. D Insta a fu pane next to the first starter haf-pane. Aways use 6-8 roofing nais or stapes per fu pane. E Create a doube ayer of thatch for the first row by pacing a fu pane over the starter panes. 3 Gabe Roof Instaation (continued) 6 Continue the starter and first row across the bottom (maintain the overhang). 7 Start the second row 8 on center as shown. 8 Continue to insta successive rows, 8 on center, using haf-panes where necessary to keep the seams between panes staggered. 9 When a row reaches the eave, cut the pane so the overhang is about 1/2 or 3/4. NOTE: Pan ahead- if the ast pane in a row fas cose to the edge, say its 4-6 from the eave, it wi be difficut to fit in a very short section of pane to finish the row. 4 Gabe Roof Instaation (continued) j k Continue instaing thatch panes up the roof, keeping a consistent overhang on each eave edge and 8 on center for each row. Make minor adjustments to the 8 on center row spacing as you near the top. The ast row shoud ine up even with the top of the ridge. m Repeat Steps 1-11 for the other side of the roof. 5 Hip Roof Instaation If you have a hip roof, insta a starter row, first row and successive rows 8 on center as shown in Steps 1-11 for a Gabe Roof Instaation. Maintain a overhang at the bottom and a consistent overhang on any eave. When any row approaches a hip: A Make the ast pane on any row stop even with the hip or a few inches short as shown. B Make minor adjustments to the 8 on center row spacing as you near the top. The ast row shoud ine up even with the top of the ridge. 6 Vaey Roof Instaation If you have a vaey roof, insta a starter row, first row and successive rows 8 on center as shown in Steps 1-11 for a Gabe Roof Instaation. Maintain a overhang at the bottom and a consistent overhang on any eave. When any row approaches a vaey: A Make the ast pane on any row stop even with the vaey or a few inches short as shown. NOTE: Try to aternate the rows into the vaey and aow the thatch to form and sit in the vaey. 1 Instaing Panes into a Vaey 6

7 Rounded or Umbrea Roof Instaation If you have a round roof, ike a umbrea or a gazebo design, insta the thatch panes in the same way as in a Gabe Roof Instaation. Begin with a starter row, then the first row and successive rows 8 on center. Maintain a overhang at the bottom. Finish the roof with a Java Top Cone (36 in diameter) NOTE: Secure or fasten the cone to the roof using wire.
