2 Materials Required 6 Mil Vapor barrier Home Depot is the ideal location as they sell in many different sizes Purchase roll minimum 500 to 1500sq ft. depending on the number / size of shelters you desire Minimum 8.5ft width 500 Sq ft makes 5 tarpaulin shelters, 1500 Sq ft makes 15 tarpaulin shelters Armored Duct tape 1 x roll. Anywhere that sells duct tape. Wooden blocks 2in x 3in x 6in length Protects gym floor. Avoids damage to the cutting edge of the grommet tools Optional: Need lots of wood blocks depending on how many youth are constructing shelters 1 inch width light weight rip-stop webbing Allows loops to be added to the plastic sheet.

3 Tools Required Coghlan s Grommet Tool set Recommend at least 3 sets Depending on how many youth are constructing shelters at the same time. Coghlan s Brass Grommet set 16 brass grommets per plastic sheet Brass grommets provide durability and low corrosion Make sure that you have enough grommets. Over estimate for waste / damage to grommets during construction Hammers ½ lb weight for ease of use by youth Make sure that you have enough hammers depending on how many youth are constructing shelters at the same time. 1 x Pocket knife Used by leaders to prize grommet tool from the brass grommets Brass grommets can spread and jam the grommet tool if youth hit them too hard

4 Lay out tarpaulin on floor. Stick duct tape at each corner Fold in half to find centres Fold in half again to find quarters Identify halves and quarters Tarpaulin size: 10ft x 8ft 10ft x 10ft 6mil plastic Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Identify halves and quarters on opposite edges Step 7 Step 4 Step 5 Step 6 DUCT TAPE 4 CORNERS Cut out a six inch piece of CLEAR duct tape and Hold tape by edges Step 1: Position 3 inches of tape underneath tarpaulin Step 2: Stick on the underside of tarpaulin and press down to ensure good seal Step 3: Fold remaining tape over the top of tarpaulin and press down to ensure good seal Steps 4 to 6: Repeat with second piece of tape to form an L shape. DUCT TAPE INNER POINTS Cut out a six inch piece of CLEAR duct tape and Hold tape by edges Step 7: Fold tape into halves and stick on ½ and ¼ positions and press down to ensure good seal.

5 COUGLANS GROMMET TOOLSET Grommet hole PUNCH TOOL PUNCH HOLE FOR GROMMET Mark the centre of the duct tape area. Place a piece of wood underneath the tarp where the duct tape is positioned Wooden blocks Cutting edge has the tapered edge Using the COUGLANS GROMMET TOOLSET Position the Grommet hole cutting tool on the centre of the duct tape. Ensure that the cutting edge is placed on the tarpaulin Using a mallet/hammer, hit the grommet cutting tool to cut through the tarpaulin and make a hole Use a wooden block beneath the tarpaulin to protect the punch tool and the floor

6 ADDING TENT PEG LOOPS To give more flexibility to your plastic sheeting, add a loop of Nylon webbing (rip-stop fabric) at each grommet hole. Use1in width webbing and cut into 8in lengths and then fold in half, Punch grommet hole through webbing and plastic sheet

7 Grommet base Brass Grommet Strike Compression tool with mallet. STEP 1 Place brass grommet with the hat on the grommet base Tarpaulin hole STEP 2 Place the tarpaulin hole over the brass grommet Flat brass grommet (curved side up) STEP 4 Place the compression tool over the brass grommets and into the Grommet base. Using a mallet, hit the compression tool to flatten the brass grommet parts together. STEP 3 Place the flat brass grommet on the top of the tarpaulin (curve side up) NOTE: DO NOT HIT THE COMPRESSION TOOL TOO HARD OR TOO MANY TIMES OTHERWISE THE BRASS GROMMETS WILL SPREAD AND JAM AGAINST THE COMPRESSION TOOL.

11 This design protects 4-5 people in a semi-enclosed A-frame, or it can become a wind/rain shelter for a larger group. The Siltarp is made from a 10x12ft rectangular tarp made With grommets or lightweight nylon webbing loops on the corners and sides, this design facilitate a variety of setups for trekking poles, paddles, avalanche probes, or trees. This design provides wind/rain shelter, or covered gear storage. This minimalist tarp is an 8x10 ft rectangular made from waterproof nylon. The Siltarp2 has a seam down the center of the 8ft length, which provides extra strength. There is 1 lightweight nylon tie loop sewn to a reinforced center patch and 16 nylon webbing loops at 2 ft intervals along the edges. These loops facilitate a variety of set ups on trekking poles, off trees or onto tents
