CAMP ROCK ENON 2018 LEADER GUIDE Cub Resident Camp SHENANDOAH AREA COUNCIL BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA 107 Youth Development Ct., Winchester, VA Council Office: Camp Rock Enon: It is the expressed written policy of the Shenandoah Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, that Camp Rock Enon is operated for the benefit, enjoyment, training and advancement of all Scouts without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age, religious denomination, or handicap.

Dear Cub Scout Leader: Did you know? Camp Rock Enon is going to be filled with young Mad Scientists this year during Cub Resident Camp? Our visiting Mad Scientists will get to enjoy science experiments, chemical reactions, physics, star gazing and much more, all centered around the Great Outdoors. We recognize that you and your pack have a number of camps out there to consider attending for Cub Resident Camp and thank you for considering Camp Rock Enon (CRE) for your Cub Scout summer destination! We are excited to offer you and your Cubs a meaningful and quality program designed around this year s theme Mad Scientist. In conjunction with our regular paid Summer Camp Staff, we are putting together a team of volunteers Expert Scientists to design and implement the program. Program details will be released in early Spring. We will have programs for the Tigers, Wolfs, Bears, and Webelos. You read that correctly, we listened to our families and added a program for Tiger Cubs and their Adult Partner. To accommodate our increased attendance and the Tiger Program, we added another session. Both sessions will offer the same programming. Cub Scouts (Tigers, Wolfs, Bears) o Session 1 on June o Session 2 on June Webelos Session on June Youth join Scouts to be in the outdoors and to go camping. Cub Resident Camp offers the best opportunity to fulfil what the youth want in an environment that they will learn lifelong lessons. We encourage you to get 100% of your Cub Scouts to Resident Camp at CRE. For those in need of financial assistance to attend, make sure you submit the campership application (for Shenandoah Area Council Scouts only) found in the back of this guide. Independent research shows that Scouts that go camping stay in the program and Scouts that stay in the program for five years or more have an absolute spike in the values they learn and they have fun while learning. These values then become life lessons that help young people grow into happy, productive and contributing members of our great country. Thanks again for your wonderful support. ONLINE REGISTRATION IS AVAILABLE NOW! Go to to register your pack to attend The Rock in 2018 and for a great adventure. 16 THE PURPOSE OF RESIDENT CAMP Why do boys join Scouting? To have fun! To go camping! Why do Scouts go to summer camp? To have fun! To be in the outdoors! Six key elements of Resident Camp: Fun Adventure Outdoor Skills Ideals Service Advancement The program at Camp Rock Enon is based on Scouts learning through a fun-filled program. Some activities are strictly for fun, while others may partially or wholly complete an achievement, activity pin, or belt loop. Program is the cumulative total of all that a Scout does, sees, and learns during summer camp. It is the job of the camp staff, unit leaders, and parents to see that Scout s experience involves all of the six key elements listed above in some way. For example, if we only focus on advancement, we might be denying our Scout an exciting adventure! Our responsibility as Scout leaders is to be aware of the importance of all six elements of the program and to communicate this importance to all parents or involved persons. While we encourage each Scout to work toward advancing by completing Achievements and earning Activity badges to fulfill rank requirements, we must guard against this becoming the primary purpose of camp. We will consider our programming successful here at Camp Rock Enon if we have helped your Scouts: Become more confident as a Scout and as a person Grow spiritually Become more empowered citizens Learn life skills by participating in events Have Fun! All of that being said, the program we provide should be considered a supplement to the units own year-long program. None of our activities are required, and if different or additional programming is desired do not hesitate to ask and we will accommodate to the best of our ability. PROGRAM OVERVIEW Summer camp at CRE is filled with fun and exciting adventure for Scouts of all ages. Our 877 acres of majestic forest in the northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia provide an unlimited supply of opportunities to make your unit s stay at CRE an experience of a lifetime. The theme for camp this year is Mad Scientist. Come prepared for tons of outdoor experiments The program will consist of science experiments, chemical reactions, physics, star gazing and much more, all centered around the Great Outdoors. Our team of Expert Scientists are currently in their labs developing and testing the program. A detail program schedule will be released in early Spring. Programs for the Tigers, Wolfs, Bears, and Webelos will be offered. Sessions offered are; Cub Scouts (Tigers, Wolfs, Bears) 75 maximum youth per session o Session 1 on June o Session 2 on June o Programming will be the same for both sessions. The Webelos Camp program includes activities that introduce Scouts to an outdoor camping experience. Additionally, it meets almost all the requirements for Aquanaut, First Responder, Camper, and Webelos Walkabout Adventures. Also rappelling, outdoor Scout skills and team building exercises will be offered. It is the sole responsibility of the Scout s parents or Unit leader to make sure requirements offered are completed on a daily basis for each Scout.

Webelos Wednesday The highlight of the week for Webelos is the Webelos Walkabout. Webelos will spend the day hiking around Rock Enon, fixing their own dinner, getting hands on experience in Outdoor Skills and other topics. They day ends with their own campfire with those wishing to, staying at their Outpost Camp. Below is a brief description on what to expect. Full details will be provided in the Spring. Webelos Walkabout: Wednesday has been set aside for the purpose of completing the Webelos Walkabout. On Tuesday with the assistance of the Outdoor Skills staff, Webelos will plan their own hike (Req. 1, 3, 5) consisting of at least 3 miles (Req. 6) and including a conservation project at some point along the trail (Req. 7). As a safety precaution, each hike group will include a member of camp staff. Lunch items will be provided immediately following breakfast so the boys (and leaders) can pack their own lunches (Req. 4). Each boy should be prepared to perform a leadership role during the hike (trail leader, first aid leader. lunch leader, service project leader) (Req. 8). (Requirement 2 can be completed on Monday at the medical lodge.) Please note that this is an all-day activity and Scouts should be encouraged to take their time and explore the areas they are hiking through. Foil Packet Dinner: Webelos will have the opportunity to prepare and assist cooking their own foil dinner. Staff will be available to assist the Webelos leaders instructing how to make and cook the dinners. Outpost Camp: Those Webelos choosing to camp at the outpost should meet at the buttress at 8:00p and bring the following: Sleeping Bag/blankets, Sleeping mat Pillow Flashlight Water Shelter o The boys can build their own shelters from branches, tarps and ropes, or bring a simple pop-up tent that they can set up themselves, or a hammock with a rain fly. Please keep youth protection issues in mind when preparing for this event. Outpost campers will return to the main part of camp prior to breakfast on Thursday. Campfire: All Webelos are invited to participate in the Wednesday night campfire on Chapel Hill. Each patrol should prepare one or more skits or songs to share. Let the outdoor skills staff know which skit(s)/song(s) you are planning to perform during the Webelos Walkabout planning on Tuesday, so they can make sure there are no repeats or grey areas.

Aquatics - Waterfront Additional Information and Activities by Program Area A trained staff and excellent equipment are on hand in this area for your unit to safely have more fun in the water. The lake at Camp Rock Enon is a great place to cool off in the summer heat. The main aim of our aquatics area is to help Scouts feel more comfortable and to improve their skill in and on the water. The aquatic area is recommended to all Scouts. Non-swimmer and Beginner Instruction: Instruction devoted to helping Scouts learn the skills to pass the Beginner and Swimmer tests and to feel at ease in the water may be requested during any Free swim/boating time. Leaders are encouraged to help with the instruction of younger Scouts. Open Boating & Swimming: Row boats are available to all Scouts during free swim/boating time staff permitting. Row boats must have at least one swimmer and one adult in them. Canoes are available to Webelos Scouts. Each canoe must have one adult. All canoers must be swimmers. Safety Afloat and Safe Swim Defense: Certifications will be instructed by one of the Aquatics Personal. Two-year certification also can be done online. For leaders only. Consult the aquatics director for times and location. Polar Bear Plunge: Come join us down at our gorgeous lake for an invigorating dip to revitalize your body and mind. Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 6am Climbing and Rappelling: Our portable climbing wall is one of the major attractions for Cub Scouts and Webelos at Camp Rock Enon. New this year is our Bouldering Wall, sure to be a hit with the boys. Webelos may also rappel from the rock face.

Outdoor Activity: The end of the Outdoor Code asks a Scout to be "conservation minded", and this is the main principle that our Nature Center is based on. We hope that after a visit to this area Scouts will leave with the right attitudes regarding the importance of our natural resources. They will also leave with the knowledge of how they can contribute to the environment. The Scouts will work on projects to improve the ecology of camp. Hiking: Camp Rock Enon has numerous hiking trails. including a portion of the Tuscarora loop of the Appalachian Trail. Contact the Outdoor skills director for trail maps and/or hike guides. Camp Conservation Project: Bring your gloves and get ready to work on the conservation project for the week. Trail Maintenance: Do you like hiking on the trails at camp? How about lending a hand to maintain and expand them. Field Sports: The Cub Scout Sports program provides Scouts with the opportunity to become acquainted with and participate in all kinds of sports while taking part in an active physical fitness program. He will have fun learning a sport, developing skills, competing with his peers and being recognized. Throughout the programs the Scouts are encouraged to learn and practice good sportsmanship and to do his best. Free-time Games: Tetherball, basketball, volleyball, Foosball, GaGa, corn hole, ultimate frisbee, and kickball just to name a few. Confidence Course: Can you beat the Confidence Course or will it beat you? How fast can you complete individually and as a team? Handicraft: Camp Rock Enon s handicraft program provides a practical means for boys to improve their physical environment by creating things useful to them and others. One of main aims in this area is to teach Scouts various skills that may become a lifetime hobby or trade. A Scout that participates in the Handicrafts Area will learn patience, selfexpression, and coordination of mind and muscle. Shooting Sports: Every Scout should have the opportunity to use the equipment in the Shooting Sports Area. Safety is stressed in this area including the proper handling of firearms and archery equipment, Marksmanship, Physical Fitness, and Sportsmanship. Archery BB-Gun Shooting Pellet Gun (Webelos only) Sling Shots Evening Program/Special Events Open Swim Craft Project Games Open Fishing Open Shoot Open Wall Climb Astronomy Night: Star gazing at its best at Camp Rock Enon. Take a hike to Chapel Hill and prepare yourself for stars galore. This late-night adventure is guaranteed to share with your unit some of the most spectacular views of CRE in addition to a wonderful show at night studying the stars above.

CAMP ROCK ENON It is the expressed written policy of the Shenandoah Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, that Camp Rock Enon is operated for the benefit, enjoyment, training and advancement of all Scouts without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age, religious denomination, or handicap.
