1 12 th July 2017 Dear Parent/Carer Re: Duke of Edinburgh s Award Bronze Award Practice Expedion I am wring to inform you of details of the practice expedion which will take place on 16 th and 17 th September This has been organised through E3 Adventures. Parents are expected to transport participants by 9.15am on 16 th September 2017 to Downe Campse Bird House Lane, Downe, Orpington BR6 7LJ. We encourage car sharing to minimise the transport costs and impact on the environment. Please be aware that there is a one-way road into the campse, so all parents will need to come in together, wa, and then turn around and leave together. Students will walk unaccompanied in their groups and will be supervised remotely. Please note that you will not be able to contact these students on their phones during the weekend. Please find a copy of the k list on the following page, students must arrive wh their equipment packed inside their rucksack, ready to depart on their expedion. Students will be able to use their phones on the Sunday afternoon to notify parents when they are ready to be collected by their parents. Students are expected to be ready to leave the campse at approximately 3pm on the Sunday, however this time will depend on the progress of the group. We will contact parents when they have finished their expedion. Please ensure that both the Triny permission form and the E3 Adventures permission form are returned by 8 th September If you have any further queries please do not hesate to contact me by at the following address: ahoward@trinysevenoaks.com Yours sincerely Miss A Howard Duke of Edinburgh s Award Coordinator
2 Please return this page and the E3 Adventures consent form to Miss Howard by 8 th September 2017: Triny School Sevenoaks Duke of Edinburgh s Bronze Award Practice and Qualifying Expedion 2017 Name of pupil: Form: I give permission for my son/daughter to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh s Bronze Award Practice Expedion on 16 th -17 th September I understand that whilst all reasonable and professional care will be taken, school viss do include some risk. I understand the expectations about student behaviour prior to the trip, and agree to meet the payment schedule detailed above. I understand that if necessary, my son/daughter may need to be collected during the weekend due to medical reasons and that there will be an adult available to collect them. Should the necessy arise, I agree to the person in charge of the party giving consent on my behalf for any urgent medical treatment to be given, including anaesthetic, as advised by a member of the medical profession. Name (please print) Parent/Guardian Signed: Parent/Guardian Date: Contact Telephone Number Alternative Telephone Number
3 Assessment Creria Whilst the expedion on the 16 th -17 th September is a practice, please find below, information to help clarify and explain some of the 20 Condions that the Assessor must focus on during the assessment weekend on 21 st -22 nd April Some of the 20 Condions 1: The expedion must be by your own physical effort, whout any motorised or outside assistance 2: Your expedion must be unaccompanied and self-sufficient 5: You must be properly equipped for your expedion 8: You and your team must plan and organise your expedion 19: A substantial meal should be cooked and eaten by participants each day (optional on the final day) Practical examples of how these assessment condions apply to expedion include: Groups should be able to navigate and walk safely and successfully whout needing assistance to reach camp whin daylight hours, demonstrating the abily to navigate and walk safely. Groups should plan to have enough water wh them for normal circumstances, we would expect each person to be carrying 2-3L of water. Groups should plan to have enough food wh them for normal circumstances. A pot noodle on s own for an evening meal does not provide sufficient sustenance on expedion, nor does just a fru bar for breakfast. Groups should carry sufficient (but not excessive) personal and group equipment. DofE suggest 1/4 of the participant s body weight as a maximum. Individuals should have appropriate footwear and waterproofs (Sturdy walking boots that reach the ankle and have good soles, spare socks). Please note that inappropriate footwear could constute a safety issue and we may not let individuals start the expedion. Groups should plan to leave camp in the morning allowing plenty of time to successfully complete their planned days activy, demonstrating that they can plan and organise themselves in a safe and appropriate manner. Wilful damage or neglect of group equipment could put the whole group at risk, this would require intervention from staff and affect condion 2. Wilful damage to property or wilful trespassing would require intervention from staff.
