1 Sat 20 th Sun 21 st June 2015 Congratulations on completing your Training and Practice Expedition and hope you are looking forward to your Qualifying Expedition. Please read these Joining Instructions carefully as they contain important information. DROP-OFF Day: Saturday 20 th June 2015 Start Location: Hartington Car Park, Mill Lane, Hartington, SK17 0AN. Times: 8:30am COLLECT Day: Sunday 21 st June 2015 Finish Location: Tissington Trail Car Park, Darfield Lane, Tissington, DE6 1RA. Times: From 3:30pm onwards. BPE Supervisors: Mark Dennison, Aysa Hardy, Hannah Vasey, John Butcher Assessor: Bruno Yates (HO9089A) Emergency Contacts Before or after the Expedition: Please contact the school During the Expedition: To be provided by the school Team Kyran Ghala, Andy Gibson, Samuel Green, Josh Hill, Peter Hill, Oliver Rea, Josh Tarry Parent Information Start: Please can students be at the start location for the stated time, so that they can start their expedition on time. There are toilet facilities at the start location and there is a good mobile phone signal. Finish: Please can those collecting students arrive at the finish location mins before the designated time, so that they can be collected promptly. This is especially vital in bad weather so as to reduce the risk of hypothermia or other safety concerns. Please be aware that the leaders have a job to do at the Start & Finish locations, including kit issue/collection, checking personal kit, briefings and de-briefs. These are an important part of the process, and we ask for your co-operation whilst these important tasks are completed. Thank you for your patience whilst waiting for the teams to arrive. Bad Weather Procedure Expeditions take place in most weather conditions. However, in the event of extremely bad weather forcing a postponement, then information will be posted on our web site. Please refer to this in the first instance. Feedback from Training & Practice Expedition To ensure a successful outcome to the Qualifying Expedition, all teams should review their training and experiences from the Practice Expedition and ensure they are well prepared for their Qualifying. This includes having the right equipment and food, and have copies of their routecards (preferably laminated to protect them from damage). Teams will then need to demonstrate that they can follow the route that they have planned, and limit the amount and length of breaks in line with their routecards. Each member of the team should take responsibility for a role on the expedition, whether that be navigation, time keeping, aim, pace setting or keeping morale. They should also have maps in hand all the time and be checking regularly that they are on the right path. A successful team is one that works together to achieve a common goal, and all need to contribute to ensure success.
2 DofE Expedition Bitesize We have designed some Factsheets on Equipment, including Kit Lists, Rucksack Packing diagram, and Menu Ideas which complement our training workshops. These are single page documents with tips and useful information, and have been published on the BPE web site. They are password protected and the details are: Location: select the DofE link. Username: DofE Password: DofE4BPE (password is case sensitive) Equipment Participants will need all equipment as detailed in the BPE DofE Kit List provided during the training, and can also be found at the end of these Joining Instructions. Group Equipment BPE will provide you with tents, stoves, safety fuel bottles and maps which will be issued at the Start and collected at the Finish locations. Each team will need to provide their own group equipment such as Brillo pads, matches, bin bags, compasses, etc. as listed on the kit list. Please be aware that the team are responsible for all kit loaned to them and that any lost or damaged equipment will be charged to the team, and may also affect the outcome of their expedition. Be sensible with the weight of your food. Don t bring excess food that you re not going to need. Ensure you have plenty of snacks and water, but don t go overboard. Also ensure group food for evening meals & breakfasts, is shared equally through the team. Weight out your food and only bring what you will need. For example, an average person will eat g of pasta, so don t bring 1kg! A guideline weight of your rucksack is 10-12kg for girls, and 12-14kg for boys, but you will know what you feel comfortable carrying. Also allow for 2kg of group kit (tent / stove).
