I cannot tell you how many children come through the doors of the Y, for either childcare or summer camp, and improve academically and socially as a direct result of their Y experience. We take great pride in nurturing the future of our children through programs that reinforce and extend opportunities to learn. The Y s summer camps are structured to prevent childhood summer learning loss, which many children experience following the end of an academic school year. Our camp programs promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), physical activity and are a place where children can be creative: they learn while having fun in the Y s structured camp environment. Y camps foster a child s mind, body and spirit in accordance with the Y s fundamental mission and responsibilities to the communities we serve. Our counselors are thoroughly screened, trained in CPR/First Aid, emergency preparedness and other safety measures. Beyond that, our counselors are prepared to give your child an enriched learning experience that they will not only enjoy, but also benefit from for the rest of their lives, both academically and socially. Whether it is the fun of singing camp songs, swimming, taking nature walks, participating in various sports, or the intellectual challenges of our STEAM-focused programs, the Y s counselors guide our campers in developing new interests, friends, and independence. 4 IMPORTANT INFORMATION YMCA LOUDOUN COUNTY SUMMER CAMP FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1. I completed my camp registration online. Is my registration complete? No. Please complete the forms located on our website. Your registration is not complete until these forms are completely filled in and returned to the Y. Please submit a hard copy of your registration to the branch after completion. In addition to the parent handbook, a precamp is our courtesy communication tool to inform you of the week s schedule of activities as well as to answer any questions you may have. If you sign up for a camp Thursday Sunday the week before camp, you will not get a pre-camp . If you do not receive a pre-camp , please confirm your address by calling our front desk at Travel campers can be picked up AFTER 4:30pm. 3. What is the schedule for before and after care? Campers will be split up and provided different, age appropriate activities for your camper. Part of the time in after care is spent on activities that combat summer learning loss. 4. What does a typical day at camp look like? Each camp is unique but follows similar schedules. Swim times may vary depending on what camp they are attending. The following is a sample schedule.* 9:00am 9:25am 11:00am Morning Meeting/ Ice Breakers Group time (Arts, crafts, science, sports, etc.) Lunch 12:00pm 12:45pm 1:15pm 3:30pm 4:00pm D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) Specialty Activity Pool time (Arts and Crafts, Science, or other activities on non-pool days) Closing Ceremonies Pick up/after-care *Please note that these schedule are subject to change. We do our best to provide you with information early so you can plan ahead, but summer camp is full of surprises, and we are often forced to make changes and we often require flexibility in our scheduling. 5. What should I send to camp with my child? Backpack A nut-free, healthy lunch and two snacks (no glass containers) Water bottle Closed toed shoes Swim suit and towel (pool day) Plastic bag for wet stuff (pool day) Sunscreen (hat optional) Bug spray Book Complete change of clothes for younger campers Please label all your child s belongings in case their things get left behind. We are not responsible for lost/stolen property 6. Can my child s food be heated up at camp? Due to the volume of participants we can t refrigerate or heat up children s meals. Please send you child with a non-perishable, prepared lunch that needs no heating or refrigerating. 7. My child is running late for Travel Camp? If you are running late please contact your camp directly and meet with them at their travel destination.. 8. What happens when my child needs to be picked up early? No problem. Please contact the Y prior to pick up to ensure your child is ready. 9. I am running late. What should I do? Late Pick-Up Policy We close promptly at 6:00 pm. For all children not picked up by the end of the program, regular or extended hours, the following late policy will be in effect: First 5 minutes: Grace Period Each 5 minutes thereafter: $5.00 per child After your third late fee please note that you may be asked to withdraw your child from camp. Payment will be drafted from credit card on file immediately If you are running late, please notify the camp and attempt to make alternate pick-up arrangements. NOTE: When a child is not picked up in emergency situations including, but not limited to: inclement weather or natural disasters, we will follow the above late pick-up policy starting 45 minutes from when the parent has been informed of the need for campers to be picked-up. 10. My child doesn t swim, what does he/she do during swim time? No Problem. All non-swimmers enjoy the water in depth that does not cross their knee height. Learn the basics of cartooning, including figure design, movement and the process of drawing, inking and coloring a strip. 11 TRAVEL / OUTDOOR AGES OUTDOOR NATURE CAMP AT HIGHROAD Camp Highroad provides youngsters with firsthand experience with nature through trail walks, crawfishing, shelter building, field games, archery, canoeing, ropes courses, hay rides, storytelling, swimming and much more! The zip line for 10 years and up is also a weekly activity. Campers gain perspectives about themselves, learn about interacting respectfully with others, and discover that they play an important role in protecting the environment. EACH DAY AT CAMP YOU WILL EXPERIENCE SOMETHING NEW: A NEW ACTIVITY, A NEW FRIEND, A NEW CHALLENGE. WHATEVER IT IS, WE KNOW THAT EACH NEW THING YOU DISCOVER WILL BE MORE EXCITING THAN YESTERDAY S. HOW DO WE KNOW? BECAUSE EVERY YEAR HUNDREDS OF CAMPERS TELL US THAT THEY DISCOVERED SOMETHING NEW AND CREATED GREAT MEMORIES AT CAMP LETTS OVERNIGHT CAMP AGES 6-16 At Camp Letts we have 3 goals for every camper: try something new, make a new friend, and have fun! We believe if a camper can do the first two, having fun is guaranteed. ACTIVITIES FAIR Overnight Camp starts on Sunday between 1:00pm and 3:00pm. During your first evening, you will attend the Activities Fair. Here, you will choose the activities that will become your morning schedule for the rest of the week. MEALS Have you seen anyone join The Order of the Oar? Have you ever eaten hands free cake on Super Hero Monday? Or nearly forgotten to eat* because lunch time suddenly became an impromptu dance party? It s almost impossible to describe the noise and fun of meal times. Three times a day, your cabin will shout and sing as you try to outperform your rival cabins, all of whom are competing for extra points towards the Crew Cup, all while eating food that seems too good to be camp food. Many meals have themes so make sure you pack something pink, a pair of knee high socks, and a tie-dye t-shirt. *Don t worry, our staff will make sure you don t forget to eat! MORNING ACTIVITIES Your three morning activities are your chance to acquire and master a new skill. So try not to choose something you do every day; pick something different and you might discover a talent you never knew you had. Programs are instructed by our diverse staff. Selected from all over the world for their experience and expertise, they will help you learn, grow and have the time of your life. In fact our great staff is the reason many campers come back year after year. AFTERNOON CABIN AND CREW ACTIVITIES The afternoons are your chance to explore all that camp has to offer. After Siesta, you will go to activity period 4. Every day you will be able to do something different. The rest of the afternoon is spent in Cabin and Crew activities. You will meet back up with your cabin and catch up on your morning activities before doing activities together as a group. Only time and imagination limit what you and your bunk mates can achieve. It might be jewelry making in arts and crafts, kayaking on the river, building shelters in the woods or exploring Monster Island. The afternoon s activities at Camp are designed to be fun and recreational, and an opportunity to get to know your bunk mates. TRY OUT OVERNIGHT CAMP AGES 6-8 Specially designed for first time campers, this two night, three day stay at camp is a great way to explore all of the fun we have to offer. Let your counselors take you and your bunk-mates on a tour of just about everything we do. Canoe, kayak or sail the Rhode River, try a pony ride, learn a new sport and design a masterpiece in Arts and Crafts. We ll take you sea-sledding, for a polar bear plunge at the pool, teach you campfire songs, reveal the secret of making the perfect s more; all this while you make great new friends! CAMP LETTS EVENING ACTIVITY When the sun starts to set, Camp comes alive. We hold a camp-wide activity or game each night, which ties in to the weekly theme. 13 YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS AT YMCA LOUDOUN COUNTY AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM During the licensed before and after school programs at YMCA Loudoun our students participate in academic enrichment, character development, S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math), themed arts & crafts projects, and structured group games. We also offer camps, fun activities and field trips on no school and early release days. We currently offer programs in 12 Loudoun County elementary schools (Buffalo Trail, Cardinal Ridge, Liberty, Steuart Weller, Cedar Lane, Sterling, Potowmack, Rolling Ridge, Frederick Douglass, Cool Spring, John W.
