2 Rustic guard stations, cabins, and fire lookouts once used by Forest Rangers of the Intermountain Region can now be rented by visitors to our National Forests. The Intermountain Region includes 13 National Forests in several states of the Intermountain West. With few exceptions, the rental cabins are rustic and primitive. Many are in remote locations offering beautiful scenery and clean air. Wildlife is abundant in these natural settings. These facilities belong to the American people. They are our treasures of times past a direct link to the very environment their users worked so hard to care for. They are yours to use, but also yours to protect. During your visit, I urge you to be sensitive to the condition of the land and the facilities you use. Don t leave litter pack out what you pack in. Always ensure fires are dead out before leaving. Leave the facilities in the best condition possible so future users can enjoy their stay. This brochure provides basic information about cabins, guard stations, and fire lookouts available to you, with specific information regarding the rental process. Please contact any of the Forest Service offices listed for more information. As Regional Forester of the Intermountain Region, I invite you to enjoy these facilities and share our American heritage. Enjoy the scenic variety and beauty of the National Forests and have a safe and enjoyable stay. JACK G. TROYER

3 GENERAL INFORMATION Making Reservations Selected recreational cabins and lookouts in the National Forests of the Intermountain Region are available for use on a first-come, first-served basis, but RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. The NRRS (National Recreation Reservation Service) is the means for reserving all cabins and lookouts listed in the following charts. Your reservation must be made by phone at or TDD , or online at Reservation and rental fees can be paid via major credit card or check. Golden Eagle, Golden Age, and Golden Access Passports are not valid for fees related to cabin rentals. Potential Risks Travel on the National Forests and use of rustic cabins or lookouts involves a degree of risk. Recreationists must assume responsibility for obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary to protect themselves from injury and illness. Weather, road conditions, personal preparation, and other factors can influence travel time and difficulty. Weather changes rapidly in the backcountry. Visitors may encounter sudden storms, including lightning, snow, and unexpected temperature changes. Responsible preparation is essential. Before the trip, we advise you to contact the local Ranger District listed in the information charts for current conditions of weather, facilities, and accessibility. Facilities Cabins and look-outs available through the rental program are rustic and primitive. These facilities were once used as guard stations and fire lookouts by Forest Rangers of the Intermountain Region. Most cabins are located in remote areas, generally accessible via narrow, winding, dirt or gravel roads. With the exception of a few cabins, there are no modern conveniences or the safeguards of modern society no telephones, traffic jams, neighbors, and no emergency services. When making reservations, ask about what is or is not furnished with the cabin or lookout. The facilities are generally equipped with the bare basics, including a table, chairs, wood stove, and bunks (most with mattresses, some without). Bedding is not furnished. Cooking utensils are available at some cabins, but not all. Electricity and piped-in water are generally not available. It may be necessary to bring in safe drinking water, or be prepared to chemically treat or boil water for consumption. At some cabins, you will need to find and cut your own firewood. Expect to use outdoor privies. Cleanup Before leaving, all users are requested to: make certain ALL fires are out; pack out all garbage, including empty bottles and cans; clean the cabin and surrounding area; and leave a supply of firewood.
