6 4 About Camp Scherman About Camp Scherman There s a reason Camp Scherman has been named Best Overnight Camp by readers of Parenting OC magazine for five years running. For over 45 years, parents continue to send their girls to Camp Scherman, because they know that their daughters will have incredible outdoor experiences. The camp is just a couple of hours away from Orange County, with 700 acres of trails, lakes, and wildlife nestled in the San Jacinto Mountains. Whether she s hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, playing games in the pool with friends, swamping (flipping) her canoe, or challenging herself on the Low Ropes Course, there are endless possibilities for her to discover all that she can do. Want to know more? Visit GirlScoutsOC.org/CampInfo. Camp Scherman s American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation shows that safety is a priority. You can rest easy knowing your daughter is in good hands while she s at camp. Is My Daughter Ready for Camp? We know that sending your daughter to camp is a big decision especially when it s her first time away from home. Girls as young as second grade can attend Camp Scherman, which is a great way for them to explore their independence in a safe and supervised environment. She ll problem solve, learn to work with girls her age, and return home excited to share the many new skills she learned. While bringing a friend might help her feel more comfortable, if she doesn t, she ll quickly make new friends on her many camp adventures! Weekend camps are a great way for first-time campers to try a bit of everything with a parent or troop leader by her side before she returns for summer resident camp! Keep in Touch with Your Camper While your daughter is having the time of her life at camp, you can see what she s up to and let her know you re thinking about her by: Viewing photos from camp through, a secure free online service* Sending one-way s to her through (fees apply). 8 Meet the Scherman Staff Our camp staff are professionally trained counselors who are energetic, experienced, and know how to bring out the wow in every girl. Many of them began as campers at Camp Scherman! We have over 40 staff members who work with Girl Scout volunteers to support and lead girls at Camp Scherman, including waterfront and pool staff, riding instructors, program staff, health center and kitchen staff, and more. They re all committed to making sure your daughter has a safe and memorable camp experience. Below are just a few of our terrific camp counselors who can t wait to meet your camper! M a v e r i c k Erin Johnson, Maverick, Camp Director I have the unique privilege to be the camp director of the very camp I attended growing up, a place that was magical and empowering at the same time. I ve spent more than 20 years working with children, and now I get to come full circle and work with an amazing team to make a positive difference in the lives of girls. Camp is the place for everyone to discover their greatness and make memories they will cherish for a lifetime. C o o k i e Cookie, Camp Staff I have spent my last eight summers at Camp Scherman. Like many staff members, camp has become my second home. Camp is a safe place for girls to try new things and develop important skills, such as problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership. I work alongside some of the most respectable and accomplished women I have ever met, and they are wonderful role models for our girls. I enjoy seeing campers return year after year and watching them become responsible, independent young women. Meet the Scherman Staff K A Z I A Kazia, Camp Staff Fresh out of high school, I packed my bags and headed to this place called Camp Joe Scherman for a summer adventure as a camp counselor, and I haven t missed a summer in 33 years. I carry with me the skills I learned, the confidence gained, and the friendships made every year. I ve watched my daughters, and now my granddaughter, grow-up at Scherman and become strong, confident leaders in their own right! I love being part of the magic of camp! The staff was awesome and silly at the same time and made me feel safe when I missed home. Taylor, Summer Resident Camper 6

9 Did you know? Camp names are a rich tradition of camp and often reflect a counselor s interests, favorite animal or character, or a childhood nickname. Once you pick your camp name, it stays with you forever! Merlin, Camp STAFF In my role as a counselor, I help girls explore, experience, and try new things. I love watching the spark in them grow as they realize what they are capable of and gain confidence in their abilities and develop self-reliance. Most rewarding is seeing how much returning campers grow year to year as their outlook and skillset expands. A truly special treat is getting to work with a camper who has decided to become a counselor herself! Shadow, Camp Staff I work at Camp Scherman because I love seeing the opportunities that the camp setting presents girls. Camp provides girls an outlet to express themselves in unique ways that they may not be able to do back home. In this beautiful outdoor setting, girls get to experience many new and exciting activities and explore who they are. I love being part of their camp experience! Zorro, Camp Staff I have been coming to Camp Scherman since I was in second grade. No matter where I am, the people and the camp will always be my home away from home. I became a counselor because I want to give girls the same opportunity and experiences I had to develop leadership skills, challenge myself, and make lifelong friends. Camp makes me feel like I belong in the world. I can use my talents to make children happy. M e r l i n S h a d o w Z o r r o Meet the Scherman Staff 7
