Kastle Kurrents Wednesday 25th July 2012 Open Mic Night In Our Kastle It was open mic night on Tuesday in our Kastle where everyone were encourage to take to the stage and entertain the crowds in what ever way they could. We had singers, dancers, a tower of Scouts, jokes and gags to name but a few. It all made for a lively evenings entertainment.

Patrol Leaders Lunch Patrol Leaders from all the Subcamps were rewarded for all their hard work with a special P.L's lunch served in the staff club on Tuesday. Everyone lots of tempting food, some fun with a special quiz and were entertained by some of our talented leaders. Bonny Scotland This is just a few of the beautiful views and scenery which our Scouts and Explorers have been enjoying on their activities with the Hill Walking Team and the 24 Hour Hike Team. The bothy made a welcome site for those who had been walking all day.

We asked some enthusiastic legendary and hilariously sarcastic campers what they will miss about camp: The sound of the bagpipes said Gaobsemaj, Murray The atmosphere Callum, MacDonald You guys Uncle George, MacDonald The new activities I get to try Ryan Gibson, Stewart I will miss all the Uncles, they were very kind to me Sean, Connecticut The mud Atholl experience team. All the international Scouts Brodie, Stewart I will miss the Greenock people Grant, Connecticut I will miss working on the best team Site Services I will miss the ducks Andy, MacDonald The wonderful weather Duncan, Mac- Donald All my friends Sharkey I will miss the wonderful toilets, the cold showers, the flag breaks and the amazing food Rachel Galloway The banter Paddy, MacDonald. The Best Parts Of The Camp. Most people says they liked making new friends here, and learning different language form different country s. Many people were enthralled by the stunning landscape of Scotland because they have never been here before and have only seen it in the movies. What is not the best part of the camp? The biting midges! With kind regards, Sven Schijvenaars en Rob van Noort The Netherlands. Staff club What does the staff get up to on night when they are not looking after all the Scouts and Explorers on site. There are many answers, ranging from showers, to just relaxing but the most popular answer by far was to head to the staff club. Many of you might not know what the staff club is what it is all about. The staff club is open for all staff on site as well as visitors and supplies an endless supply of tea and coffee and is a brilliant place to catch up with new friends and old and read the latest edition of Kastle Kurrents of course. The main attraction is the evening entertainment which is put on every night during the camp. The entertainment is provided by Leaders, Scouts and Explorers and ranges from songs, dances and for the first time last night an adaptation of Matilda. its always good to see these performances from different countries I can t believe that they are not professional performers amazing The night finishes with supper and a moment of reflection then just as on Subcamps, it is lights out and off to bed to see what tomorrow brings. Alert! This is a sad sad day. In This trailer box is the very last bottle of irn-bru left for the shop. How will all these Scouts and Explorers survive without their daily sugary intake of the girder brew? In case anyone is considering doing some camping this spring or summer, please note the following public service announcement: In Alaska, tourists are warned to wear tiny bells on their clothing when hiking in bear country. The bells warn away MOST bears. Tourists are also cautioned to watch the ground on the trail, paying particular attention to bear droppings to be alert for the presence of Grizzly Bears. One can tell a Grizzly dropping because it has tiny bells in it.

What Costumes did you bring to camp? At the Heroes & Villains Party and Disco from the Krypt, we saw lots of interesting costumes ranging from Neon Warriors to John Travolta. We to asked people what costumes they brought to camp. I made a costume out of a bin bag. A Scout said. It cost me 2pence! Animal Heroes and Villains Scary Other Pizza Toppings Out of 40 people - 12 said pepperoni, 9 said Hawaiian, 8 said margarita, 5 said meat feast, 3 said plain cheese, 2 said sausage and 1 said black olive with no vinegar. One year on since this happy lot were away flying off the World Jamboree in Sweden. ibuild When we went to ibuild for an interview with the people doing the activity, the first thing we heard was the sound of sawing. We asked one of the leaders called Jim about what they were doing. What you basically do in ibuild is that you get to design and build speakers for your mp3 player or computer out of wood and electric components. It s a whole day activity including sawing painting and putting things together and the people there seemed to have fun. Viktor, Albin & Alex

We asked people how they would say a tongue twister in a their first languages If you think your average tongue twisters are hard this challenge would have definitely pushed the boundaries of our overseas guest s word compilation, coordination and speech. We managed to find out how to say this tongues shredding question in six different languages; Dutch, Portuguese, Norwegian, German, Spanish and with a little help from our popular South African guests, we learnt it in Afrikaans. English: how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck would chuck wood? (25people) Norwegian: Huor mye ved ville en vedkutter kutte, huis en vedkutter kunne ved? (4 people) Spanish: cuanta Madera puede corta un woodchuck si un woodchuck puede corta Madera. (5people) Brazilain/Portuguese: quanta madiera pode um lenitador cortar se o lenitador cortasse Madeira.(1 person) Dutch: Hoe veel hout zal een hout hahher hahhen, al seen houthahher hout zou hahhen.(5 people) German: wie viel holt wϋrde ein holtfōller fällen weinn en holt fällen wϋrole (6 people) Afrikaans: Hoeveel hout sal n woodchuck gooi as n woodchuck soi gooi hoύ (4 people) With many thanks to our volunteers and many apologies for the possible incorrect translations as we have either been taken for mugs or our translation is not legible on paper. By Matt McAnaw, William Syme and Ewen McSporran What s cooking at Backwoods Cooking? Zoe Donaldson and Gustov Pessin said Here we ve cooked fish, beef, bread and butter pudding, apples with marshmallows, banana and today we re making stew. I think it is so simple to do anyone could do it. We haven t had any accidents yet so I think everyone can do it. -Why is it called backwoods cooking? -Activity Leader Arthur Martin told me that backwoods cooking basically means cooking using minimal equipment. It s bush craft in a way Next I spoke to Callum Moogley from Murray sub-camp. -What do you think about Backwoods cooking? - I ve just started but it s good, much better than team sports! And final words from Arthur the activity leader, If you come to backwoods cooking you will be handling raw meat and fish so if you re thinking of coming along be warned. Everyone s Favourite Animals By Robyn & Rhiannon (Robertson) We asked an assortment of folk round camp what animals they like most and they told us Sloth-0 Red Panda-0 Badger-0 Giraffe-3 Snake-0 Rabbit-2 Bumblebee-1 Ferret-0 Dog-8 Penguin-4 Platypus-2 Honey Badger-0 Deer-0 Otter-1 Moose-0 Cow-4 Tiger-2 Monkey-2 Cat-5 Parrot-3

The Site Services Team The camp has been going on for over a week now and everything is still running smooth thanks to the Site Service Team. They do everything from cleaning the toilets two times a day to supplying firewood. They make sure the water is warm in the showers and disposes all of our garbage and lots of other important stuff. The Site Service Team is the back bone of our camp and without them everything would fall apart. Probably the best reporters of Blair Athol decided to interview Graham Paterson head of the Site Service Team and find out some interesting facts. Did you know that we use twenty rolls of toilet paper every day or that we throw away 3.5 tons of garbage every day? 10 tons of firewood has been used including the great camp fires that the site service team set up for us. We have used 70 gas cans and 2500 litres of diesel for two electric generators that generate the electricity used to write this very article. Graham Paterson has worked with the site service team on Blair Athol every second year since 1984 and has planned this very camp for nine months. He and the others have worked every day on this camp except Sunday (when they still had to clean the toilets for us). So the next time you go to the toilets or throw away your garbage these remaining days, think of the guys working with the site service and be grateful for everything they have done for us and still do. By Emil Romin, Lucas Fändrik and Christopher Chisholm Staff Around Camp

Happy Birthday to you Eilidth Kirkwood who is Unlucky Number 7 Tuesday evenings locals v leaders football match was a tragedy, with a score of 7-0. One leader from our losing side, Jamie said, I know where I needed to be but my legs couldn t get me The Crazy Catering Crew What makes Blair Athol amazing? The force behind it is its hard-working, crazy-cool staff. Just like the campers, the staff aren t robots and they need to eat! The staff of over 400 people is fed by the catering crew, who work in the marquee by the front gate. With staff from all over the world, the catering crew has a huge job to accomplish three times a day. Here s a glimpse into the daily life of the catering staff. Preparation for breakfast starts at tea the night before, as there is not enough time to get everything done in the morning. This continues with lunch being prepared during breakfast and dinner during lunch. This cycle is repeated every day for the duration of the camp. On average, catering staff work shifts of 10 to 15 hours, and even once the meal is finished, there are dishes to be done. After a meal, the dishes alone take approximately three and a half hours to wash (and you thought your patrol had lots of dishes!). The dishes are washed by different groups of staff every day. When asked for how much food they have to prepare for certain meals, here s what catering had to say: 5 bulk bags of sausages for breakfast 2 ½ tubs of salad for lunch 50 kg of chips And a gazillion potatoes catering staff Some meals were more popular to cook than others, with baked beans ranking near the top. Meals that were disliked by the team were the ones that required chopping of onions and massive amounts of chips. The catering crew are what drives the staff in this awesome place that we ve called home for the past week. Some members of the catering staff have even been on site days before the camp started, so next time you see a member of the catering crew, make sure to give them a high-five! By Nicholas and Kima

The sight of a bald eagle has thrilled campers for generations. The sight of a bald man, however, does absolutely nothing for the eagle. Closing Campfire Thursday 9.30pm Take this simple test to see if you qualify for solo camping. Shine a flashlight into one ear. If the beam shines out the other ear, do not go into the woods alone. A two-man pup tent does not include two men or a pup. A potato baked in the coals for one hour makes an excellent side dish. A potato baked in the coals for three hours makes an excellent hockey puck. Contingent Leaders Meeting Thursday 5pm Families Reception Thursday The guitar of the noisy teenager at the next campsite makes excellent kindling. Check the washing instructions before purchasing any apparel to be worn camping. Buy only those that read Beat on a rock in stream.
