5 WHICH PROGRAM TYPE IS THE BEST FIT? Day Camp Choose from more than 20 volunteer-run camps located throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. Each day camp has its own program and culture, all while sharing a quality Girl Scout experience. Friends and Family Overnight Experience classic overnight camp as a troop or family group. Classic Overnight The traditional overnight camp experience! Campers will try a variety of activities including swimming, campfires, paddling on the lake and more! Specialty Overnight Girls focus on a particular skill, expedition or experience, in addition to our classic camp activities! Leadership Overnight Girls get to practice working directly with campers and staff as they learn to plan and facilitate activities and develop leadership and outdoor skills. Available only for girls entering grades 9 12 in fall Unsure about which program type would be best? A variety of camp options are offered all summer long, ensuring your camper can get in on the fun no matter what her summer schedule looks like! 6 CAMP PROGRESSION CHART Which camp experience is right for your camper? Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington s summer camp programs are designed to help girls experience continual learning and growth in the outdoors. This chart will help you visualize your girls development through her outdoor experience and help you and your girl choose the best place for her to start! No matter which experience you choose, your girl will have fun, build skills, meet new friends and make memories for a lifetime! FAMILY DAY AT OVERNIGHT CAMP OPEN TO: Kids entering grades 1 12 (boys, too!) and adults. DAY CAMP OPEN TO: Girls entering grades 1 12 (varies by camp) and adult volunteers. FRIENDS & FAMILY CAMPS OPEN TO: Girls entering grades 1 12 and adults. LENGTH: 1 AT THIS CAMP: Explore overnight camp properties and meet the staff. GIRL EXPERIENCE: See where you would sleep at overnight camp, meet the counselors and try a few different camp activities! ADULT EXPERIENCE: Tour the camp property and meet the camp staff to get your questions answered! AVERAGE LENGTH: 5 AT THIS CAMP: Camp activities vary by camp and some have an optional overnight for grade 4 and older. Camps are ran by volunteers. GIRL EXPERIENCE: Learn and practice outdoor skills, leadership skills, crafts, games, songs and more! ADULT EXPERIENCE: Day camps are volunteer run, and are always looking for more help. Volunteer with your girl! AVERAGE LENGTH: 3 2 AT THIS CAMP: Participate in overnight camp together! Try swimming, paddling on the lake, crafts, games, outdoor cooking, songs and more. Participate as a troop or family group. GIRL EXPERIENCE: Get a feel for overnight camp with your friends or family by your side. ADULT EXPERIENCE: Experience overnight camp with your girl. GIRL EXPERIENCE: Experience camp on your own! Sleep in cabins with 3 7 other girls similar in age. Counselors sleep in a cabin nearby. OPEN TO: Girls entering grades AVERAGE LENGTH: 6 5 AT THIS CAMP: Try a traditional camp experience at classic camp or go on an expedition with a specialty. Are you interested in horses? We have programs available for all levels of experience (grades 4 12)! GIRL EXPERIENCE: Experience camp on your own for a longer week! Sleep in cabins with 3 7 other girls similar in age. Counselors sleep in a cabin nearby Length varies by program. AT THIS CAMP: You will help lead activities for younger girl groups at camp. These programs help develop skills and offer the experience needed to be a camp counselor. Contact day camps directly for details. ADULT EXPERIENCE FOR GIRL-ONLY OVERNIGHT CAMPS: During drop-off, you can accompany your camper to her sleeping unit to help her get settled. On pick-up day, your camper will become your tour guide and show you all her favorite parts of camp! OVERNIGHT CAMPS 6

8 Girl Readiness Questions Maybe/ Not yet Sometimes You bet! Do you enjoy staying overnight at a friend s house without missing your family? Can you shampoo and brush/comb your own hair? Do you enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and swimming? Are you willing to try new foods that you haven t eaten before? Can you live without radio, TV, video games, phone or internet? Are you comfortable being around bugs and flying insects? Do you like to meet new people and try new activities with other girls? Can you make your own bed and keep track of your belongings? When things don t go your way, are you able to still participate in a positive way? Do you enjoy sleeping outside in a cabin or tent and listening to the sounds of nature? Are you willing to help with kapers (camp responsibilities) like sweeping cabins, setting tables and picking up trash? Can you follow instructions from adults? Do you enjoy participating in group activities? Do you make new friends and warm up to new places easily? Are you excited to go to camp? Add up all the numbers you have circled: Are you ready for overnight camp? You would enjoy attending a day camp or a shorter three-to four-day overnight camp session. It might be a good idea for you to wait until next year for a longer overnight camp session You are ready for overnight camp! Pick the camp and program that sounds like FUN to you and matches your grade level and experience You must be an experienced camper! It sounds like you are ready for a camp stay of six days or longer. 7

9 Adult Readiness Questions Maybe/ Not yet Sometimes You bet! Can you relax and enjoy yourself when your girl sleeps overnight at a friend s house? Would you be okay communicating with your girl ONLY by mail or one-way ? Are you prepared to be away from your girl for several days? Are you willing to entrust the camp director and counselors with the care of your girl? Are you comfortable with your girl living and playing in a rustic, outdoor setting where she will get dirty and it might rain? ARE YOU CONFIDENT IN YOUR GIRL S ABILITY TO: Shampoo and brush/comb her own hair? Sleep in a cabin knowing her counselors are nearby in another cabin? Eat new foods that she has never tried before? Make new friends and accept others who are different from her? Follow instructions given by a camp counselor? Cope with being homesick? Keep track of her own things? Add up all the numbers you have circled: It might be a good idea for you to wait until next year to send your girl to overnight camp. Day camp, shorter sessions or girl/adult programs are good options. You may benefit from giving your girl small opportunities to exercise independence before she leaves home for several days You are ready to send your girl to overnight camp! You may feel more confident if you attend a Summer Camp 101 session or open house and follow the tips in the confirmation packet (sent after your girl has been signed up) You are ready to send your girl to an overnight camp that lasts six days or longer. You are confident in her ability to prepare and have a great time at camp. 8

10 ABOUT DAY CAMP There are more than 20 Girl Scout day camps across Oregon and Southwest Washington! These camps are planned and run by volunteers from our Girl Scout community. Each day camp has its own program and culture, and all camps give girls and volunteers the opportunity to have great Girl Scout experiences. From outdoor skills to cooking, crafts and games, there s something for every girl! Day camps typically run for four or five days, with some camps offering an optional overnight for girls entering grades 4 and up. GROW Learn new skills, try new things, and make new friends! Day camp is open to all girls entering grades LEAD Girls entering grades 6 and up will have the opportunity to earn leadership awards such as Leader in Action (LiA) and Program Aide (PA). Some camps even offer Counselor-in-Training (CIT)! Check with the individual day camp for more details about available leadership programs. VOLUNTEER Day camps are run entirely by dedicated volunteers. Every camp needs volunteers to lead units, teach specialized skills, help with logistics the list goes on! If you are interested in volunteering, contact the leadership of the camp you and your camper would like to attend. 12 ABOUT OVERNIGHT CAMP GSOSW s overnight camps are located in unique geographic regions providing opportunities for camp-specific activities. No matter which camp location your girl chooses, all overnight camp sessions provide opportunities for your girl to focus on building skills and confidence in her areas of interest, while enjoying all that camp has to offer. While climbing the rock wall, she may be overcoming a fear and stepping out of her comfort zone. While canoeing with a new friend, she is learning about communication and teamwork. While she is participating in all the fun activities that might otherwise be out of reach in her everyday life, camp will provide her with a place all her own to gain the skills, confidence and growth experience you are hoping for. You ll be amazed by all she gains through her camp adventure! CLASSIC CAMP Classic Camp, available at all three overnight camps, is the traditional overnight camp experience! During each session, campers will enjoy a variety of activities including swimming, campfires, cookouts, paddling on the lake, games, crafts, songs and more! Each unit of girls plans their week of activities together with additional opportunities to choose activities individually. Each grade level has the opportunity to complete steps toward earning a Girl Scout badge, or even fully complete a badge! EARN BADGES Campers in grades 4 and above will also get to choose skills to focus on throughout the session. This approach allows campers to get to know their instructors, progressively build skills and gain confidence each day. The activities offered will vary by week. 11

13 A TYPICAL DAY AT CAMP 7 a.m. Wake-up 7:45 a.m. Flag Ceremony 8 a.m. Breakfast 9 a.m. Activities 12:30 p.m. Lunch 1:30 p.m. Me Time (downtime for campers to rest or write letters) 2:30 p.m. Activities 5:45 p.m. Flag Ceremony 6 p.m. Dinner 7 p.m. Evening program 8:30 p.m. Back in units getting ready for bed 9 p.m. Lights out (time will vary depending on age and daily activities) Flag: Campers learn about flag ettiquette and get a chance to lead a flag ceremony for the whole camp! Meals: Campers enjoy family-style meals served twice daily in the dining hall and a third meal is packed up and eaten at a location chosen by the cabin group. Activities: Our girl-lead programming allows campers to choose what interests tem the most. Regardless of the program, each girl will get to enjoy swimming, boating, arts and crafts, outdoor cooking and more! What will she do with her extra time? The program determines her other activities! She can spend time with horses at Horse Camp, go on an expedition in a Specialty Camp or build her skills in Classic Camp focus areas. Evening program: Evening programs are a great way to get the whole camp together! These include campfires, ice cream socials, and whatever the girls create! 12

14 STEVENSON, WA CAMP EAT SLEEP LEARN 13 The sun is rising over Wind Mountain and it s time to start the day! Girls will explore, discover and create at Camp Arrowhead in the scenic Columbia River Gorge near Home Lake (home to western pond turtles!). Laughter and friendships will grow over family-style meals. Once a day, a meal is packed up and eaten at a location chosen by the cabin group. Your camper s group might canoe on the lake, sit by the pool or take a short hike to their meal destination. Campers typically sleep in four-person woodland cabins. Each sleeping unit has a communal space with cooking facilities, showers and flush toilets. Girls gain confidence each day as they meet new friends and practice leadership skills. From outdoor cooking to planning a trip, girls get to know their instructors and progressively build skills. Camp staff are specially trained to teach girls how to safely climb a rock wall, use a bow and arrow, develop team-building activities and much more!

CAMPERS ENTERING GRADES 4 6 Waterfall Wonders Explore the wondrous and diverse waterfalls of the Columbia River Gorge. Have a picnic at one of the falls and explore a cool mountain stream. Learn about and care for llamas on this amazing hiking adventure. 18 FLORENCE, OR CAMP EAT SLEEP LEARN 17 Do you hear that sound? Adventure on the Oregon Coast is calling! Girls will explore, discover and create on a wooded peninsula surrounded by Lake Cleawox and Honeyman Memorial State Park sand dunes. Laughter and friendships will grow over family-style meals in our beautiful dining hall. Once a day, a meal is packed up and eaten at a location chosen by the cabin group. Your camper s group might kayak to the dunes, enjoy food on the dock or explore camp for her meal destination. Camp Cleawox has a variety of sleeping units including adirondacks, cabins and yurts. Units have running water sinks and a combination of waterless and flush toilets. Flush toilets are also located in the shower house, dining hall and a few additional areas throughout camp. Girls gain confidence each day as they meet new friends and practice leadership skills. From singing songs to outdoor cooking, girls get to know their instructors and progressively build skills. Camp staff are specially trained to teach girls how to paddle a kayak or paddleboards, use a pottery wheel, develop problem-solving skills and much more!

22 PHILOMATH, OR CAMP EAT SLEEP LEARN 21 The summer breeze blows gently over horses grazing in the pasture and canoes docked on the shore of Lake of the Winds. Girls will explore, discover and create at Camp Whispering Winds in the Willamette Valley. Laughter and friendships will grow over family-style meals in our open air dining hall. Once a day, a meal is packed up and eaten at a location chosen by the cabin group. Your camper s group might dine by canoe, overlooking the horse arena or explore camp for her meal destination. Camp Whispering Winds has a variety of sleeping units including adirondacks, cabins, and our newly-restored covered wagons. Units have running water sinks and a combination of waterless and flush toilets. Flush toilets are also located at the shower house and in a few additional areas throughout camp. Girls gain confidence each day as they meet new friends and practice leadership skills. From outdoor cooking to planning a trip, girls get to know their instructors and progressively build skills. April Cost: $15/person GIRLS IN THE WOODS Registration opens Dec. 9, 2017 This 5-day overnight camp is hosted by the U.S. Forest Service staff in the Willamette National Forest, and offers girls two options: tent camping at Fish Lake for the week, or three days of wilderness backpacking plus two days of tent camping at Fish Lake. Campers will go boating and hiking at Clear Lake, practice their outdoor skills, do nature themed art projects and much more! This program is for girls entering grades July Cost: $300/person TAMBU Registration opens January 9, 2018 Put your outdoor skills to the test whether beginner or expert at Tambu, a friendly competition for Girl Scout troops in grades 6-12! Registration Our online registration system allows you to register, complete forms, deposit money into Trading Post accounts and make payments all in one place. Online registration is the fastest and most accurate way to register. Simply visit girlscoutsosw.org/overnightcamp and click on register now. Registrations are also accepted via mail, fax, and walk-in. Phone registrations cannot be accepted. Download the registration form at girlscoutsosw.org/overnightcamp or pick one up at your local service center. See form for submission details. Please allow 5-7 business days from date of receipt for paper registrations to be processed. Once you have paid the $50 non-refundable deposit, we encourage you to use Cookie/Nut Credit to pay the remaining balance of camp fees. Tiered Pricing GSOSW offers tiered pricing to keep camp affordable for girls and their families while also expressing the true cost of overnight camp. Tier one reflects the actual cost of camp including staffing, program supplies, food and maintenance costs. Tier two is a partially subsidized fee. Tier three is our fully subsidized fee. You can select tier three as your pricing option without requesting financial assistance. Regardless of what tier your family is able to pay, all girls will enjoy the same high quality camp experience. When registering for camp, please pick the tier your family can afford. Tiered prices are listed with each camp session description as tier one/tier two/tier three (ex. $325/275/225). Tiered pricing can be adjusted after registration if requested. 29

31 Financial Assistance Overnight camp financial assistance (campership) is available for all girls. To apply, use the Overnight Camp Financial Assistance Request found at girlscoutsosw.org/overnightcamp, or call (800) ext to request form# 116a by mail. See the form for submission details. Please select tier three pricing when requesting financial assistance. Information collected for camperships is kept confidential. Campership information will be sent separately from your camper confirmation and should arrive a few weeks after receipt of your financial assistance request. Financial assistance is made possible by generous donations from individuals. More than 160 girls were able to attend camp last year thanks to financial assistance! If you d like to support this important fund, visit girlscoutsosw.org/donate or call (503) Cancellations To cancel a camp registration, send an to activities@girlscoutsosw.org at least three weeks prior to the first day of the camp session. Cancellation must be made by this time in order to receive a refund of the registration fees paid less the deposit ($50). Refund Policy Partial Refund The camp fee, less the deposit ($50), will be refunded only if: The camper does not attend due to illness or injury. A letter from a physician must accompany a refund request. The camper is sent home from camp due to illness or injury occurring at camp. Refunds are prorated in such cases and will not be made if the camper attends more than half of the camp session. This refund will only be made at the written request of the parent/ guardian within 30 days of the end of the camp session. Family plans change and the camper can no longer attend. In this case, written cancellation must be received three weeks before the opening date of the confirmed session. Full refund The total amount paid will be refunded (including the deposit) only if: A selected camp session is full and no alternative can be found. The financial assistance amount requested is not fully granted and you are unable to pay the remaining balance. Trading Post Refund: Deposits made to the Trading Post that result in a leftover balance of $5 or more after your camper s session will be provided as refunds by October 1, We appreciate your patience as the camp season comes to an end. 30

Yes, camp is open to all girls entering grades 1 12 in fall 2018 no prior Girl Scout experience required! If your girl is not already a registered Girl Scout, $25 will be added to your total camp balance to cover Girl Scout annual membership dues through September 30, Girl Scout annual membership dues are sent to Girl Scouts of the USA to cover the cost of fundamental services supporting the Girl Scout Movement, including accident insurance. This membership is non-refundable. Is transportation available to and from camp? Transportation is not available to and from camp and we are unable to provide carpooling resources. When dropping your girl off, you have the golden opportunity to see where she will be enjoying her time at camp and to meet camp staff. You will receive directions to camp in your confirmation . See Can parents/guardians visit the camp? on the page 33 for more details. Can you accommodate my camper s medical/dietary needs? Absolutely! We want to help your girl have a GREAT time at camp. Understanding her needs before she arrives will help us provide her with the best possible camp experience. Campers enjoy family style meals served twice daily in the dining hall, and a third meal is packed up and eaten at a location chosen by the cabin group. 33 How can I communicate with my girl while she s at camp? You are encouraged to send mail and to your girl while she s at camp. Phone access is available to staff for emergencies only. Camp is purposefully a place where girls can be unplugged, allowing them to fully connect with each other and their environment. Mail: To ensure that your camper receives a letter each day, we recommend writing letters ahead of time and giving them to staff at camper drop-off. Staff will hand deliver them to your girl throughout the week. You are also welcome to use the mailing address provided in the confirmation . Don t forget to pack pre-addressed and stamped envelopes for your camper to write back! Family and friends are welcome to your girl while she s at camp. s are printed and delivered to campers once a day. Campers will not be able to reply via . Can she do that? Yes, she can! Camping with a friend can be a lot of fun, and is a great way for girls to strengthen friendships while making new ones. If your camper wants to enjoy the adventure of camp with a friend, both girls must: 1. Meet grade requirements and be registered for the same camp program. 2. Be listed as buddies on their registrations. 3. Have a current 2018 Girl Scout membership. Buddies will be placed in the same sleeping unit, and will be encouraged as all campers are to try a variety of activities and make new friends! This institution is an equal opportunity provider. 32

34 OVERNIGHT CAMP FAQS CONTINUED Can parents/guardians visit the camp? We offer an open house at all three of our camps where you and your girl can visit the camp, tour the facilities and meet the camp staff. Each camp director will be available to answer questions during open houses. See page 1 for open house details. During drop-off, you can accompany your camper to her sleeping unit to help her get settled. On pick-up day, your camper will become your tour guide and show you all her favorite parts of camp. What training does camp staff receive? All GSOSW camp staff are required to pass a background check and complete a two week training program prior to working with campers. Training includes CPR/First Aid certification and emergency preparedness, child development, group management, how to manage homesickness and more. Staff at each camp are trained in safety and facilitation practices for the program activities available at their site (i.e. archery, horses, lifeguarding, rock climbing). Is there a camp store? The Trading Post is a store at each overnight camp where girls can purchase fun memorabilia, camping accessories and camp-branded clothing! The easiest way to add funds to your camper s Trading Post account is during registration. To add funds after registration, contact activities@girlscoutsosw.org. The average amount added to Trading Post accounts is $35. Please keep in mind that Trading Post account deposits must be made online and cannot be accepted on the first day of camp. 33

35 Where will my camper sleep? Sleeping accommodations vary depending on the camp property and unit (a unit is a group of cabins). Some examples include cabins, yurts, adirondacks and even covered wagons! Campers bunk with girls similar to their age and counselors sleep in a cabin nearby. Arrowhead: A unit house is available for each unit of girls with flush toilets and private showers. Cleawox: These cabins each sleep six girls in bunk beds. Each cabin has screened in windows and two screen doors. Arrowhead: Cabins sleep four girls with eight cabins in a unit. Cleawox: Camp yurts sleep eight girls with three yurts in the unit. Cleawox and Whispering Winds: A shower house with private stalls, changing areas and flushing toilets. Cleawox: Adirondack cabins sleep eight girls with three cabins per unit. Whispering Winds: Cabins sleep four girls with eight cabins in a unit. Whispering Winds: These covered wagons are a camp favorite! They sleep four girls with five wagons in the unit. 34
