Letter from the Regional Program Manager Welcome Team Leader, Welcome to BCM s paddling program this year. We are fortunate to have you as part of our team. I would like to highlight a few things. Pre-Trip Responsibilities: Don t forget to schedule a conference call with your adult team to discuss roles and your style. Remember, you are a team leader, not a trip leader. We choose the word team because that reflects the facilitation part of your job. Of course, you can over-rule the group on rare occasions, especially if you feel something is unsafe. You should plan on the meeting place and collect cell phone numbers. If you can ride up with the group, you will have extra time to start the group process. If you are not traveling with the group, please make sure you have a plan to cover meals and gas for the travel up and back. Please plan your food for the trip. A list of what BCM provides and a suggested shopping list are included in this binder. The first and eighth days are travel days. Day 2 is the prep day and the middle days are for the wilderness expedition. Please see the Daily Outline for more details on each day. This Base Camp Course Area Guide will explain travel details, information about staying at our base camp, and local resources. Gear Storage: Big City Mountaineers stores gear at Wilderness Wind for Boundary Waters trips, therefore the team leader is in charge of managing the distribution of gear, with the help of a gear check-out list. All gear is stored in Heron s Cottage (see the base camp map). Storage shelves and hooks are labeled so everyone knows where the gear should be. Two sets of equipment are in the building. If a trip is already on the water then you arrive, you will notice just one set of equipment. If not, then you will find two. Keep in the mind the group behind you needs a full set of equipment. If something looks short, please contact the regional manager right away to report this. One group will likely come out of the wilderness and another arrive while you are in the wilderness. So, leave the storage very neat and don t block it with boxes or travel clothes. Use vehicles for storage of personal items. The team leader handbook has a complete checklist of all the trip equipment needed. The only optional item on this list is the fleece pants. Please judiciously consider if you don t think you need a particular piece of equipment. Happy Trails, Your Regional Program Manager 4
General Information BCM Headquarters 1667 Vine St. Denver, CO Regional Office Chicago, IL Base Camp Wilderness Wind 2945 Hwy 169 Ely MN Gear Pick Up: All of BCM s gear is stored in Heron s Cottage at base camp. No one besides BCM uses this building. Your canoes are stored outside this building. Please check with Kathy about the advisability of where to store food in this building, since we have not yet successfully mouse-proofed Heron Cottage. Permit Pick Up: Permits need to be finalized at Wilderness Wind before you leave on your trip. Kathy likes to process the permits the evening before departure so that there is one less thing to care for in the morning. Grocery Store: Pharmacy: Zup's 303 E. Sheridan Ave. Ely, MN, Ely Community Pharmacy 328 W Conan St Ely, MN Pamida Pharmacy 115 E Chapman St Ely, MN Directions: it is at the top of the hill on the right hand side of the road as you go into town. 6 Trailhead Directions from Base Camp Directions or Transportation There will be several different people who will be driving you to your entry point, or picking you up. There is a BCM clip board down at the garage for you to record (or just communicate this information to Kathy) when you are planning to leave in the morning as well as where and when you want to be picked up. If there are other groups in camp that have drop-offs and pick-ups on the same day as you, you may need to be worked into other s schedules. Though this likely won t be a significant issue, Kathy will let you know what the drop-off or pick-up schedule looks like. WW staff will talk with you about how to best suit your groups needs and interests. Maps The following custom, water proof maps are best for the Snowbank Trailhead: Fischer F-11: Loops ending at Snowbank Fischer F-31: Snowbank to Lake One route Return all maps to the storage area for reuse. You can also use 2 to 4 Mackenzie maps. Rest Area Recommendations The trailhead is close to base camp, so you will not need a rest area during this leg of the trip. Travel Tips WW generally loads their canoes onto the trailers the evening before primarily so trips can get on the water earlier. You are welcome to do the same, however it is certainly not a problem for WW if you load canoes in the morning. If there are several groups going out on the same morning, WW may need to straddle departure times due to the availability of canoe trailers. Kathy or other WW staff will let you know if this is an issue and provide suggestions on when to load the canoes. Please keep in mind that if you are planning a late departure, you may still want to load canoes the previous evening because of morning quiet time. 6
Base Camp Directions from Home Directions PART I: To DULUTH from CHICAGO: Take I90 out of Chicago, once past Madison, take I94 towards St. Paul/Eau Claire at the split of 90/94. Once near Eau Claire, take Highway 53 north. From DULUTH to CAMP: Take Highway 53 north and then follow the directions below. From ST. PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS to CAMP: Take Interstate 35 north and turn north onto Hwy 33 near Cloquet. Take Hwy 33 north until it meets Hwy 53 and then follow the directions below. PART II: Once you are on Hwy 53, take it north through Virginia. A few miles north of Virginia take the Hwy 169 north exit toward Ely (note that Hwy 169 south to Hibbing which comes well before the Hwy 169 north exit.) After you travel through Tower, continue on Hwy 169 for approximately 15 miles. The camp is located seven tenths of a mile beyond Wolf Lake Rd. (Co. Rd. 404). The camp is on the left (north) side of the road. Look for the camp sign and large white mailbox: both are located on the north side of Hwy 169. Please use extra caution as you turn into the driveway. It is located within a passing zone and people sometimes pass turning vehicles, as they are about to turn left into the drive. To LAKESIDE from PINE RIDGE: Turn right at the end of the lane. After 3 miles, you will pass Robinson Lake (a lake on the right hand side that is very close to the road), the highway curves to the right and goes up a bit of a rise. At the top of the rise, look for the group of mailboxes on the left, turn left onto Bradach Road which is immediately after the mailboxes. (If you see signs for Clear Lake, you have gone too far). Follow Bradach (first immediately bearing to the right, then to the left, and then to the right again. At the top of the hill, stay straight so that you are heading down to the lake (rather than bearing to the left again). Once to the lake, Wilderness Wind Lakeside is to your left. You can park immediately to your left. Rest Area Recommendations There are a number of rest areas along the interstate highways. Travel Tips First of all, don t follow the directions from mapquest or google unless you are sure you have put in the correct address. You may get there, however there are two different locations for Wilderness Wind. In order to get to the right location, please follow the directions above. You want to go to the Pine Ridge location (also known as base camp). Getting Home You can follow your directions backwards to get back home. Start by turning right out of base camp. 7
Getting Acquainted with Base Camp About Wilderness Wind Wilderness Wind is our base camp host. They are a non-profit faith based organization. Wilderness Wind offered its first trip in The availability of the Lakeside cabins in 1995 broadened the program to include people with varied abilities and interests in wilderness experiences. Wilderness Wind (WW) offers wilderness experiences for individuals and groups regardless of skill level and experience. They offer canoe trips into the Minnesota Boundary Waters and the Canadian Quetico. Wilderness Wind also has four cabins on Armstrong Lake where BCM trips will be assigned specific cabins. In addition, while offering retreats and spiritual experiences, WW encourages others to examine their relationship with creation. As Earth sustains all life, and as WW believes that God called it into existence out of goodness, WW takes the last phrase of their mission statement seriously (environmental sustainability). Living sustainably is an important component of WW s faith expression and they consider their relationship with that which sustains all on a daily basis. Wilderness Wind has guests and leads trips which are not part of the BCM program. When asking things of them, please keep in mind we are only part of what they do! Upon Arrival Straight ahead and slightly to your right as you come in the driveway, is the office. All signs around camp are on paddles. You should notice the office sign. There is a garage to the left of the office. More often than not, someone is either in the office or the garage. Please let WW know you have arrived. If no one is in either of these two locations, you get to go for a short walk. Two options of where to find us include: 1) the food prep building, up the hill behind the office (has clapboard siding). 2) the staff house, up the hill and more behind the garage (newer and has siding like the garage). The easiest way to get to either of these buildings is via the wood chipped path between the garage and the office. Note: if for some reason staff are not at camp when you arrive, they will leave a note on the office door to let you know when they will return. Where possible, BCM s Regional Manager will also call the team leader ahead of time if this is the case. (Please see the sketch of Wilderness Wind on next page). Main tasks for tonight are dinner and getting to know each other. Parking Upon turning onto the Wilderness Wind driveway, on your right towards the end of the driveway are two small parking areas. Make yourself at home. Please try to drive up with the teens. This gives you a good chance to get to know them before arrival at base camp. If that isn t possible, see if you can carpool with other adults on the trip. Parking is limited at Wilderness Wind, so we should try to minimize the number of vehicles we bring up there. Finding the Campsite Your campsite is at the top of the hill beyond the food prep building and the staff house. Though there is a road to the top of the hill, WW is working to close this off in the interest of 8
open space and having the camping areas feel more like the wilderness rather than a parking area. Please walk your camping items to the top of the hill. There may be carts available to transport your items, so look around. First and foremost, you will notice the bath house. The three campsites and trails to the campsites all originate from the bath house. They are all named with Native American words and the campsites progress in alphabetical order. They are Maang, Miskwadeshi, and Wagosh. Please see the Campsite Guidelines that we encourage all campers to care for while they are in camp. Sleeping Arrangements at Base Camp The group will sleep in platform tents provided by WW. This is a nice transition from city life to camping.the tents come with mattresses. You will need to use trip sleeping bags brought or provided by BCM. Your campsite will have two tents. One is large and one is medium. The teens and one youth agency leader should sleep in the large tent. The agency leader is needed in that tent in order to keep noise level down and help the teens get to sleep at a reasonable hour. You will find the teens are especially excited early in the trip and may have difficulty getting to sleep. The WW staff sleep in the Staff House and Yurt. Both of which are close by. You may need to move a mattress from the medium tent to the large tent to accommodate six in the large tent. The second tent is for the remaining three adults. Water Source There are water jugs (the orange canister variety) located outside the women s side of the bathhouse. They are labeled drinking water. You can also drink the water from the spigot on the side of the bathroom or from the sink, but the taste and smell will be stronger than the water which has been sitting in the jugs. Cooking and Dishes All cooking and eating utensils are located in the cabinet on the outside of the bath house. The cubbies within the cabinet are labeled so that they correspond to each campsite. If you are missing an item, please ask one of the staff for a replacement rather than taking it from another site s cubby. With the exception of camp stoves, you should not need to use BCM cookware/utensils while at base camp. Please use partly used fuel canisters only while at base camp (new ones are for trail only). The stoves and canisters are located in Heron s Cottage down the hill. There are dish pans and soap in the same cabinet as the dishes. Please remember base camp is located in a remote area with bears and other wildlife close by. No food should be left out all must be stored inside a building or vehicle. This includes the compost bin. Generally, the compost bin can be kept in the bathhouse when not being used. WW is considering moving the dish storage closer to the sites if that happens, the cabinets on the back of the bathhouse would be available to store food. Each campsite has two tents, a picnic table that is located under one of the tent tarps so that you can eat there even if it is raining, a fire ring area and a small grill for cooking. 9
Check with the cook about storing items in their refrigerator. Last year, space was very limited. They may purchase a new refrigerator this year which would provide more space. Rather than throwing away perishable items, donate them to WW or leave for the next trip. Gathering Locations 1. Your camp site has a picnic table and fire ring. 2. You may also have interest in going to the worship ring. It is a short hike and the seating allows for people to spread out more. You are welcomed to use this ring for any gathering. In general, WW only uses it for worship time, so you will have a good idea of when it is open for your use. 3. The Large Tent: Each camp site has a medium and a large tent. The large tent is big enough to fit the entire group during inclement weather or high bug activity. 4. The Food-Prep Building: This building is WW s main operating building where they pack all their food, discuss routes and go over safety information with groups. It is also where staff hang out. It is a fairly busy building, however may be available for our groups at times as well. Please check with staff for its availability. During orientation days when other groups are in camp, it will likely be used for a large portion of the day. How to Handle Garbage Compost Get a compost bin (ice cream container) from WW staff in the Food Prep building for your food scraps. The bin should be returned to the Food Prep Building once you are done with it. Recycling Recycling bins are on the side of the garage. Please recycle paper, cardboard, glass, and plastic containers. Cardboard boxes should be broken down and slid between the recycling cans. Spent fuel containers Please drop off at an REI if possible. They can also be sent back with the group for the regional manager to deliver to REI. Rest of Garbage there will be a can inside the garage door (next to the recycle center) for those items which cannot be composted or recycled. It may be marked BCM. Routines at Wilderness Wind Wilderness Wind staff start each day together. They gather at the picnic tables between the garage and the office. One of the staff or volunteers offers a brief reading and they find a place to sit individually in silence for 20 minutes. After the 20 minutes of silence, a bell is rung and all come back to the tables to share any reflection that has come to mind or something that they are pondering. BCM campers and volunteers are welcome to join them for this morning ritual. If for whatever reason you choose not to, please keep in mind that the goal of Wilderness Wind is for camp to remain as quiet as possible during this time. The Wilderness Wind staff generally decide the time (8:00 or 8:30) at the beginning of the summer, and any staff person will be able to tell you what time was decided. (Mornings when groups are being transported to their entry point are the only times that the staff don t gather. This is because staff are typically transporting groups during this time frame. If your group is going out, but is not planning an early departure, please respect this morning quiet time). In addition, when groups are in camp, Wilderness Wind staff generally gather for a time of worship and reflection. Sometimes this is on a weekday, sometimes on a Sunday, sometimes an evening, other times in the morning. Please check with Kathy about this schedule. Again, you are welcome to join other campers and staff. If coming to this gathering is not desired, 10
please honor this block of time as quiet time. It will be important to note that the group also disperses for 20 minutes of quiet at the end of the gathering, thus please check in on availability of buildings or gathering places. There is also a schedule on the outside of the garage which will clarify which mornings Wilderness Wind staff will be transporting groups and thus not having our quiet time. One of the predominant themes at Wilderness Wind is awareness to land and ecological issues. This plays itself out in many practices around camp including composting all food scraps, reusing Ziploc bags, recycling all that we can, being conscious of water and electricity use and caring for the trees, vegetation and wildlife around us (to name a few). While at Wilderness Wind we are invited to consider our impact on the land. Feel free to read a list of the sustainability practices that WW are taking on their web site at to find out more about what systems are in place around camp. Recreational Activities You can go to Lakeside to swim or canoe. The Lakeside property is 4 miles west of Pine Ridge. Please refer to your directions above for how to get there. Once there, please keep in mind that vacationers are staying in the cabins. Please keep your group together and towards the landing and keep noise levels in check. You are welcome to use the bath house if needed once you are out there. It is the newer building located behind the cabin called LaVielle (the third one). Swimming This end of Armstrong has a wonderful gradually sloping sand beach. You have to go way out into the water in order to not touch the ground. Towards the middle of the summer you will be confronted with vegetation as you swim out to the deeper part. This can be a problem if people get scared by the feel or experience of the weeds. Campers are swimming at their own risk. There is a life saving buoy at the Octagonal building. Remember, BCM policy requires a PFD while swimming or canoeing. Canoeing BCM will have two spare canoes at Lakeside. Wilderness Wind will loan us two additional canoes for a practice canoe session on Day 2. Please bring BCM paddles and PFDs when you go to Lakeside. The BCM canoes will be easier to use as rescuee boats for the t- rescue practice. You can swap people around between canoes in order to get everyone a chance to be both rescuer and rescuee. 11
Base Camp and Trip Guidelines 1. Keep snacks and other food/drink items in your vehicle. Due to the bears and rodents, these items should not be put in the tents. 2. At times squirrels, mice, chipmunks, birds and bears will wander into the campsite. Please do not feed them. 3. Compostable items such as apple cores/orange peels should be returned to the food prep building for our composting worms. 4. Wash dishes in the dish pans provided rather than the bathroom sinks. Any food particles in the water can be put in the toilet. Please keep black pots out of the sink. 5. Recyclable items go in the appropriate containers outside the garage. 6. Please allow staff to add lime to the latrines rather than doing it yourself. 7. Please be aware of your group s noise level. 8. Check in about type of repellent they brought along. DEET will deteriorate tent material. Please keep the following in mind if you use it: Apply to the back of your hands for applying to other parts of our body. This will keep the DEET off the palm of your hands and thus off the tents and gear. Also, please apply DEET only when you are outside and away from the tents. 9. Please don't smash mosquitoes or other bugs against the tent walls. 10. Please don't use candles, stoves, or open flames in the tents. 11. Securing the door tent flap inside the tent each time you enter or depart will help reduce the number of bugs that are able to come into the tent. 12. Firewood is provided for you. Only gather kindling as needed from dead and downed trees. 13. Water for washing dishes is located outside the bathhouse. Drinking water is available in the cooler on the picnic table or on the porch of the food prep building. Thank you for your cooperation!!! 12
Post-Trip Responsibilities Cleaning Gear We generally clean up gear at the top of the hill in front of the bathhouse. There is a hose and drying lines for cleaning gear and drying gear. Dishes can be washed in a bin at the spigot on the back side of the bathhouse. If it is raining, ask the WW staff about cleaning gear in front of the garage and using the covered drying area next to the garage. In caring for gear, please use biodegradable soap which is provided. If you run out, please purchase additional and leave what is left for the following groups. Remind all that small quantities of soap is preferred. In addition to wasting, it is hard to rinse out over-soaped items. Please return the hose to storage after use. Please make sure all your gear is put away as it is dry or by the time you depart camp. Please refer to the Canoeing Trip Gear Cleaning Instructions in section 2 of the team leader trip binder. Laundry It is recommended to send an adult into town to do laundry, shower (check across the street) and purchase any food for day 8 while the rest of the group stays to clean the gear. Remember, don t send one youth and one adult into town alone! Please unload any travel clothes from the van before it leaves for town so that those who finish cleaning at base-camp can shower and change. Directions to the Laundromat are at the beginning of this guide. Do not use bleach or fabric softeners on BCM clothes. Please wash: Fleece tops, pants (if used) and hats long underwear sleeping bag liners (each group washes liners from the previous group, look for the bag marked dirty sleeping bag liners). Sleeping bags only if dirty (use a small amount of soap) Showers Showers are taken after the gear is cleaned. The bathhouse has a women s and a men s side, if you are the only group in camp during your stay, you are welcome to use both sides. Check in with Kathy about this option. It may be worth noting that there is only one hot water tank for this bath house. Access to hot water is generally not a problem except on days when several groups get off the water in short succession and the hot water heater cannot keep up. Please take care to conserve water especially during these high use times. Celebration Dinner This meal will be served in the food prep building. There may be extenuating circumstances where this is not the case and the outfitter will let you know those ahead of time if this is the case. We will wash our own dishes when we eat in the food prep building. We generally eat the evening meal at 6:00; however this fluctuates according to groups in camp. Please double check with the cook to confirm the time. 13
Before Leaving Base Camp 1. Please take note of the list inside the dish cabinet for instructions about leaving. 2. Please leave your campsite as you found it and ready for the next group of campers. 3. Please straighten up Heron s Cottage for the next group. You can leave non-perishable food on the shelf labeled please use me for subsequent groups. 4. Please call the regional manager with a quick trip report. This report will cover a summary of how the participants did along with a report on any incidents and equipment problems. 5. Please clearly label equipment which is broken. The Regional Manager will likely ask you to send it back with the youth agency. 6. Put up a signed flag in Heron s Cottage. 7. Leave dirty sleeping bag liners in bag labeled Dirty Sleeping Bag liners. Team Leader Paperwork Refer to the Paperwork Checklist in section 2 of the trip binder. 14
