1 General File Series, 1828, , 20 cu. ft., folders This series is arranged alphabetically by folder title and then chronologically within each folder. Most of the material in the General File series consists of a variety of publications on the nation s parks, historic sites and monuments. There are also newspaper and magazine articles, newsletters, bulletins, reports, maps, correspondence, memos, notes, and speeches. Garrison used these materials for reference in his jobs as a National Park Service employee, free lance writer, guest lecturer and visiting professor. There is material on the national parks, including Big Bend Glacier, Grand Canyon, Sequoia, Yellowstone and Yosemite, where Garrison worked during his career as well as material on other parks and public lands. Also included is information on his position at the Hopewell Village National Historic Site and his two District of Columbia posts, plus files on the National Park Service s field training facility, the Horace M. Albright Training Center or Academy. In addition, the series has correspondence and other material relating to Horace M. Albright, who helped Stephen T. Mather start up the National Park Service in There are reports and memos concerning MISSION 66, a National Park Service program to improve the preservation and protection of the nation s parks and public lands and to execute it by the Park Service s 50th Anniversary in Park Service policy information can be found on concessions, carrying capacity of the parks and public lands, ethics in park management, forest fires, equal employment opportunity, personnel, and the controversy over the title and duties of the rangers. Other material on the National Park Service includes its 50th Anniversary and history, conferences, memos and newsletters. Some quotes, clippings and other material on Interior Secretaries Walter J. Hickel and Stewart L. Udall and National Park Service Director George B. Hartzog, Jr. are located in this series. The correspondence folders in this series contain letters and memos. The majority of Garrison s personnel records are filed in this series as well as some biographical material. A number of speeches done by Garrison on a variety of subjects can be found in this series. In addition, there are copies of some speeches by Presidents John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon, National Park Service Director George B. Hartzog, Jr., and some other individuals. There are speech preparation notes and reference material on such subjects as beauty, humor, poetry and religion. Material on other general subjects includes bears, camping, cities, conservation, environment, historic preservation, Native Americans, land planning, management, planning, pollution, public relations, safety, water and watershed management, wilderness and wildlife. Some of the many groups/programs in which Garrison was greatly involved listed in this series include the Aspen Institute Executive Program, the National Conference on State Parks, the National Recreation and Park Association, the National Wildlife Federation, Sierra Club, and the Society of American Foresters. Information on some of the universities where Garrison lectured includes Arizona State College, Colorado State, Ohio State, Oregon State, Stanford and Texas A&M. Finally, this series contains correspondence, notes, miscellaneous sections and drafts concerning Garrison s book, The Making of a Ranger: Forty Years with the National Parks.
