3 FOREWORD The National Park Service, a bureau of the Department of the Interior, is responsible for administering and protecting Federally owned scenic, scientific, historic, and recreational areas of national significance that were established for the benefit and enjoyment of the people. The National Park Service also administers the National Capital Parks, a metropolitan park system comprising approximately 790 urban and rural areas located in the District of Columbia and nearby Virginia and Maryland. The number of visitors to the areas administered by the National Park Service provides an indication of the public use. The information contained in this report are the yearly summations of the daily count or estimates of the number of visitors entering each reporting area for years through. For the purpose of this report the areas are grouped and the data summarized in accordance with the tabulation below. Group I includes those areas that make up the National Park System while Group II is the park system of Washington D. C, the nation's capital.
