Let s travel to different locations throughout the United States, and detere our route via the highway system. Later, each learner can select a set of locations to discover, plan a route, a schedule, and summarize in a trip itinerary. Introduction The exercise exposes the learner to the US highway system, points of interest throughout the United States, and expects the learner to detere distances, estimate travel times, set a schedule, and summarize in an itinerary. Learners can work on these exercises as a group or as individuals, and the teacher can elect to have them present their results to the rest of the class. The teacher can provide the exact locations of the points of interest, or encourage the learners to look them up prior to planning the route. 2009, Clackamas Community College, Project SHIFT. 3 Road Travel Exercise-Example Trip Imagine that you and your family are taking a road trip to visit several points of interest across the United States. Let s plan a trip! 1.) Present the list. Review the following list of travel opportunities. We are planning to sing at a concert at each city, one performance per city. We will take a bus, and drivers will be provided, so they can share driving responsibilities to avoid driver fatigue. 2.) Check the locations on a map, and arrange a logical order to visit each attraction, to result in the shortest overall route. List : Logical Order: Highways: Miles / 50 mph Time to allow 3 days-travel, San Francisco Bay San Francisco Bay I80 990/50=19.8 hr sleep, sing, tour San Fran. Detere which highways to take, to get to each location. Calculate an approximate amount of time it will take to travel each leg of the trip. Assume a 50 mph highway speed (this helps allow for construction slow downs, rest stops, etc). How long will it take just to drive this entire route? 4.) Build a summary itinerary of the trip, showing each destination, the length of time it will take to travel between each leg, and what sites can be seen each day (can we see more than one attraction in the same day?) Allow time to enjoy the sites. How many miles is the entire trip? How many days should we allow for this trip? What other factors should we consider? Teacher note: There may be slight variation in the mileage, depending on what site they use to calculate driving mileage (not as the crow flies). The learners have total freedom on deciding how many days, should they elect to add time for local attractions. Incorrect would be if they put >24 hrs travel time in one day. Watch for correct result in total days added correctly.
