Learning Objectives What is the history of wildlife conservation?

History Early settlers: In the 1600 s, during the arrival of pilgrims, wildlife was plentiful p & was able to meet the needs of people. Needs turned into wants, which led to exploitation - the use of natural resources for profit. By the 1800 s, people began to see a need for conservation of natural resources.

History Yellowstone National Park (established 1872). Located in Idaho, Montana, & Wyoming. The very first national park in the world. Pelican Island Federal Wildlife Refuge (established 1903). Located in the Indian River Lagoon of Florida. First federal bird reservation. Set the precedence for today s National Wildlife Refuge System.

History Bureau of Forestry becomes the U.S. Forest Service (1905). Receives authority for the nation s Forest Reserves from the Department of Interior. National Association of Audubon Societies for the Protection of Wild Birds & Animals (founded 1905). Founded in New York. Dedicated to the protection of gulls, terns, egrets, herons, & other waterbirds high on its conservation priority list.

History Glacier National Park (established 1910). Established by Congress & located in Montana. Borders Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada, together they were designated by the United Nations as Biosphere Reserves in 1976.

History Grand Canyon National Park (established 1919). First afforded Federal protection in 1893 as a Forest Reserve and later as a National Monument. Established as a National Park by Congress. Located in Arizona.

History World Conservation Union (founded 1948). Originally named The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Brings together government & non-governmental organizations from around the world. Dedicated to protecting natural heritage through policy & onthe-ground actions. A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold (published 1949). One of the most influential works about conservation. Argues the need for a land ethic, embracing a more respectful, harmonious relationship with the natural world.
