3 REGISTRATION How to Register 1. Mail completed registration form and payment to 538 Arena drive, Soldotna, AK Drop-off completed registration form and payment at Parks & Rec Office (538 Arena Drive). 3. No pre-registration needed for drop-in activities. Class Confirmation There is no confirmation of classes. Please provide address to receive class changes and cancelation updates. Do not wait until the last minute to register. Fees Class fees are to be paid at registration. Fees are charged to cover brochure, instructor and/or program support expenses. Refunds Refunds will ONLY be given for classes/ activities that are cancelled by the S.C.S. Program. Refunds granted for any other reason will be charged a 10% administration fee. Cancelations If KPBSD cancels classes due to inclement weather or is closed for vacations then S.C.S. classes will also be canceled. If minimum enrollment is not met 48 hours prior to the first class then it will be cancelled and participants will receive an . Unsupervised Children Please do not bring children to adult classes or activities. This can be a distraction to other students and creates a liability for the S.C.S program. Photography Occasionally video and photographs are taken of participants for promotional use only. If you do not wish to participate please notify the photographer, instructor, or staff. No Smoking/Alcohol use policy The use of all tobacco products, marijuana or alcoholic on KPBSD premises is forbidden. 4 YOUTH PROGRAMS Martial Arts Youth This class will instruct children in the traditional Japanese based martial arts. Students will learn punching, kicking and blocking techniques as well as how to perform kata (choreographed martial art combinations). This class will help develop physical strength, flexibility, and mental awareness. It will also teach the history and philosophy of Japanese martial arts as well as a basic understanding of the Japanese vocabulary associated with the martial arts. 6 ADULT & TEEN ART & HOBBIES Spinning Yarn Students will learn how a spinning wheel works and basic maintenance techniques. Learn to spin single ply yarn and basic 2 ply. Instructor will provide a variety of fibers, including different types of wool, silk, cashmere and alpaca for participants to try spinning. Learn how to spin from raw fleece including how to skirt the fleece, pick it, card it and practice spinning in the grease. Fur Sewing This class will demonstrate hide stretching and teach skin sewing techniques and secrets for making projects such as; trapper-style fur hats, women s dress band hats, sheepskin slippers with beaver cuffs, baby booties, baby hats, children s beaver mittens, sheepskin trapper-style hats, and earmuffs. Supplies for small ornament projects provided. All other materials will be available for sale at class for large projects. 7 Astronomy - Night Lights Stop by for a few evenings and learn how to use a star finder and telescopes. Some astronomy topics will be presented too. If skies are clear, make sure to bring very warm cloths, cookies and hot cocoa. 8 ADULT & TEEN ART & HOBBIES Spanish Language (Intermediate level) This class gives students the opportunity to put to practice their Spanish language skills in a fun and high energy environment. Conversation topics will include an introduction to Latin culture, cooking, traditions, history, travel and dance. This class is for intermediate Spanish speakers, but do not be scared if you feel a little out of practice as this class will be fun. Dutch Oven Cooking Learn the technical and tasty aspects of cooking in this historical cast-iron delight. This class will cover the basic types of Dutch ovens; recommended accessories; care and use of an oven; cooking techniques; and heat and temperature management. Participants will be required to bring a Dutch oven and ingredients to cook for the second and third classes, but charcoal will be provided. Suggestions on purchasing a Dutch oven will be provided during the first class and a limited number of ovens will be available to borrow. Players are not just a defender or an attacker but a complete soccer player and have a much better all-around understanding of the game This is not a league, just a class designed to let youth explore their talents and develop a love of the game of Futsal. Martial Arts - Teen/Adult Do you love Cross-Fit? Do you love Yoga and meditation? Then try a workout with Sensei Salzetti. This class will teach the value of strengthening your body, improving your mind and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Physical benefits of the class include improved flexibility, better balance, increased muscle tone, strength and stamina. 13 Zumba A Latin influenced dance style class that combines high energy moves and dance combinations that are designed to make your workout fun and make you feel great. We take the "work" out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. This high-energy workout challenges the beginner and elite athlete alike. Build stamina, improve coordination and flexibility, and burn calories as you build lean muscle with this fun and challenging workout. This is a noncontact workout. 14 ADULT & TEEN RECREATION Indoor Kayak Clinics This indoor kayak clinic series is designed for all paddling abilities. Participants can choose to join for one class or all eight depending on interests and desired skill development. Classes are based on curriculum established by the American Canoe Association (ACA). A limited number of rental boats are available and personal kayaks must be extra clean with no exceptions. Space is limited to 6 participants. Pre-registration is required Weeks 1-2: Intro to kayaking / basic strokes and maneuvers. Weeks 3-4: Advanced strokes and maneuvers Weeks 5-6: Intro to bracing and rolling Weeks 7-8: Bracing and rolling Open Pool for Kayaks Interested in practicing your kayak skills in a warm pool this winter? Then come to our open pool sessions to practice and tune up your roll, brace, tricks, and other skills. The Open Pool Sessions will be sharing the pool with the Kayak Clinics so no kayak polo at this time. We hope to offer kayak polo in the winter but sufficient interest is required. Learn what goes on in the mind of a movement instructor while teaching a class set to music how to identify and modify moves, how to predict patterns and changes, and ROCK your next dance fitness class. Wear comfortable clothes and bare feet. Be prepared to move, sweat and smile. Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga Your mat is a stand up paddleboard; the pool is your studio. Enjoy practicing yoga while adapting to the motion of the board, the continuous challenge to balance, and the instant instability created by minor energy and weight shifts. Class will be spent moving through a modified, paddleboard friendly, Vinyasa Flow sequence of asanas that will work the core muscle and challenge balance. The class will end with you experiencing a peaceful Floating Savasana. We hope to offer additional SUP yoga sessions this winter but sufficient interest is required. Feel free to come to one or both sessions. On Tuesday, Oct 10th, learn tips for telling captivating stories and practice telling personal tales in a small group. On Thursday, participate in True Tales Told Live Rehearsal (the Storytelling Event is Friday, Oct 13th). Bring a 7 minute story to share that fits the theme, "Family: Recipes for Disaster." 20 PARKS & RECREATION ICE PROGRAMS Ice Skating Institute s (ISI) Recreational Ice Skater Test Programs are used worldwide, have accepted standards, and have been developed for those who skate for recreation and enjoyment. These programs appeal to first time skaters because it teaches movements they can master almost immediately. It provides achievable objectives with immediate results. ISI skaters range in ages from two to 80+. Tots Classes (2-5 years): Tues. 12:15-1:00 PM. If they can walk they can skate. Beginning fundamentals from falling down and getting up, forward and backward swizzles, and an introduction to crossovers all done in a fun atmosphere All Age Class (2 to Adult): Tues. 6:30-7:15PM OR Saturdays 12:00pm-12:45PM. Students will learn the basics from stopping to turns with new fundamentals added each week. Homeschool Class: Wed. 12:15-1:00 PM. This class allows homeschool students to satisfy the P.E. requirement while learning to skate. 7 weeks session 45 min. each week $70 for 1st session $34 for 2nd session 4 free public skate passes Report cards Badges Production Team A Production Team is anyone and everyone who wants to be part of a team, regardless of skating skill level and age,. This is a lavish, creative, artistic work marked by extreme freedom of style and structure, using costumes and props to illustrate the number. This entry-level class will teach skaters how to skate in unison while performing basic blocks, wheels, lines, intersections, circles, and hand holding. Tuesdays 6:30-7:15 PM Saturdays, Noon to 12:45 PM 7 weeks session, 45 min. each week $68 for 1st session Adult Hockey Rusty Blades Tier I is the adult hockey league playing from 1-3 nights per week. The league also holds one tournament per year with teams from the Peninsula as well as Anchorage. For registration call Trevor Baldwin Rusty Blades Tier II is geared for the recreational or beginning adult hockey players. The league plays 1-3 nights per week, Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday. Knowing that there can be a risk of injury or personal property damage, the participant's agree to assume full responsibility for any and all reasonable risk to themselves and will release, waive and hold the KPBSD & City of Soldotna and/or the Soldotna Community Schools Program and employees, agents and volunteers harmless from any and all actions, causes of action, claims, demands, damages, costs, loss of service, expenses and compensation, on account of, or in any way growing out of, any and all known and unknown personal injuries and property damage that might arise from the participant s involvement in the classes/activities. If the participant is a minor child, the undersigned parent/legal guardian consent to said minor child participating in classes and authorizes Soldotna Community Schools to obtain any and all necessary emergency medical care or treatment for the minor child, if reasonable attempts to notify the parent or legal guardian are unsuccessful. Participation in or attendance at programs or events sponsored by the Soldotna Community School Program constitutes the voluntary consent of the participant or attendee to: (a) be photographed, filmed or videotaped by a Department representative and (b) the reproduction and use of all such photographs, digital images, films and likenesses for publicity purposes in publications, brochures, advertisements, promotional and marketing materials and all other media venues.
