It is again time to try to figure out what to expect over the next twelve months. Marcon s market reports regularly delve into financial reports from respected companies such as Caterpillar, Wärtsilä and Tidewater looking for insight. Then we mix in predictions from the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, International Energy Agency, and toss in a sampling of cargo throughput from ports around the world. After all this we still wonder what the future may hold. According to the Chinese Zodiac, will be the Year of the Snake. This New Year begins on 10 th February and ends on 30 th January Ancient Chinese wisdom says a Snake in the house is a good omen because it means your family will not starve. People born in the Year of the Snake are reportedly keen and cunning, intelligent and wise. They are great mediators and good at business. Not only is the Year of the Snake, but appropriately for those in the marine industry it is the Year of the Water Snake. Feng shui experts say that industries that may benefit in are related to water and metal elements, which I presume includes maritime. While signs look better for marine industries, shipyards may not benefit as much in. Industries related to earth and fire, such as construction, may not do as well, especially those yards building dry cargo and container ships. Fairplay Newbuildings Online starts off the New Year with 557 towing vessels, 722 OSVs and 269 other offshore on order out of a total of 6,574 vessels being built worldwide. This is the lowest total World Orderbook since Marcon started tracking newbuildings over five years ago. It is also said that if your lucky element is Water and you did well in Year of the Dragon, then your luck will most likely continue during the Year of the Snake. Even forgetting the Zodiac, the majority of companies surviving will likely survive, but not all. Five years after the early-1980s recession there was a lot of fallout among vessel owners and shipyards. In 2012, we saw mergers, acquisitions and bankruptcies in the corporate arena; and storms, droughts and fires in the natural world. There is no reason to think that will be any different. will not necessarily go as predicted, whether forecast by zodiacs, tea leaves, Mayan calendar or economists. It is a good time to remain flexible and ready to meet whatever challenges appear. World economic recovery continued through 2012, but was weaker than experienced in 2010 and Last year s growth was even below the average and not felt equally across the world. The United States had 2.2% growth and real GPD declined in the Euro area. A 3.6% slight improvement in global growth forecast for will most likely start out weak as problems in advanced economies weigh down averages. There should be more growth during second half when even the Euro area may climb out of recession. A bright light is seen in emerging markets and developing countries which are expected to see 5.6% in and continue on to 6.4% (Continued on page 11) Featured Vessels TB30028 Dbl Hull Inland Tank Barge TG24078 Tug - Twin Screw TP Towboat/Barge Combo SU23649 Supply Boat - AHTS DB21074 Deck Barge - Ocean INTERNATIONAL SHIP SALES & CHARTERS CONSULTANTS

Latin America and the Caribbean, projections are 3.9% and 4.0% for the and 2017 periods. 3.4% growth in world trade volume in goods is expected in Trade in is expected to grow 4.6% with most of that occurring towards the second half. As a comparison, average growth in the periods of and 2004 were 7.1% and 5.2%. World exports in U.S. dollars are projected to total US$ trillion (+ 0.37%) in, after a projected US$ trillion in 2012 and US$ trillion in As another indicator of the weakened state of trade, the Baltic Dry Index started out the New Year trading at just under 700 due to overcapacity in shipping. The United States also continued recovery like other advanced economies unevenly and with mixed signals. U.S. labor and housing markets strengthened. Employment rose in December, but the unemployment rate stayed unchanged at 7.8%. We still have a long way to go. Construction added jobs in December, led by employment increases in construction of buildings and in residential specialty trade contractors. Some of the gain was due to Hurricane Sandy and may be short-term, but house prices do seem to be bottoming-out which may bode well for future residential construction. Manufacturing employment rose, with small gains. Employment in other major industries, including Details believed correct, not guaranteed. Offered subject to prior sale or charter.

12 MARCON INTERNATIONAL, INC. P.O. Box 1170, 9 NW Front Street Coupeville, Washington Address Service Requested TG Tug - Azimuthing mining and logging, transportation and warehousing, and government, showed little change. After a 2012 growth of 1.8%, the U.S. economy is forecast to grow 2.1% in and increase to 3.3% by Uncertainty continues to weigh heavy on the markets, not only in the U.S., but abroad. The United States represents 37.4% of advanced and 19.1% of all world economies. The effects of any decisions out of Washington quickly ripple across the world. The U.S. avoided a fiscal cliff with Congress agreeing on the easier points of contention, but there is still much needed to be done to get on a stable financial path. Cuts have to be made to entitlements and the debt ceiling must be raised. Politicians will be walking a fine line between what is best for the country and what they told their constituents in order to get voted into office. Two big risks to recovery during first half are haphazard sequestration and over-zealous government austerity. Stay tuned for heated budgetary battles, political games and potential pitfalls which could still derail our fragile recovery. Having confidence in government and a feeling of certainty about the future would go a long way to increase growth and thereby help reduce the deficit. The U.S. has the ability to not only solve its problems, but to beat current projected growth forecasts. Does it have the will? One thing that the U.S. cannot grow without is infrastructure. Infrastructure is key to productivity and competitiveness. As Hurricanes Sandy, Irene and Katrina have shown, we need to spend on aging infrastructure to even maintain what we have. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), in post-world War II years, the U.S. was recognized as having the greatest infrastructure in the world. Since 1998, the ASCE released numerous report cards assessing America s infrastructure. During that time the best grade received was a D+. The 2009 report placed the estimated five-year investment needed to upgrade the nation s infrastructure at US$ 2.2 trillion. World Economic Forum s Global Competitiveness Index 2012 ranks the U.S. in 25 th place in overall infrastructure. The U.S. is in 20 th place for quality of roads and 19 th in port infrastructure. The U.S. also has 7 th place rankings for capacity of innovation, 6 th for scientific research institutions, 7 th place company spending on R&D, 3 rd place University-Industry collaboration in R&D, 5 th place in availability of scientists & engineers, 1 st place for domestic market size and 2 nd place for foreign market size. We have a lot of smart people in this country and good potential for innovation. We need to put these resources to work. The U.S. is also in the 68 th rank for extent & effect of taxation, 124 th for business costs of terrorism, 76 th for wastefulness of pork barrel government spending, 59 th place for favoritism in decisions of government officials and 54 th for public trust in politicians. One idea that has been proposed, considered, ignored and re-proposed time after time by politicians on both sides of the aisle has been a national infrastructure bank leveraging federal funds with private monies to invest in replacing deteriorating infrastructure from water & sanitation to ports, roads & bridges. would be a good year to see this bill finally passed. As the eternal optimist I believe the U.S., can achieve stronger growth than initially forecast. If we lay a secure foundation, this year could be a stepping stone to a strong This year could be a very interesting year with many opportunities. Complete article available on our website at.
