It was rugged, remote wilderness and no one would have blamed him for turning around, or refusing to go altogether. He was in his sixties after all, and had an important job back at the diocese. But the monsignor kept driving, bumping over rocks and mighty ruts, carrying everything he needed to say Mass out here in the remote Southern California desert, unaware of the life he was about to change. It was the summer of 1977, and when Monsignor Sammon finally arrived at Schoepe Scout by Connie Clark Reservation at Lost Valley, most of the Catholic scouts camping there for the week didn t think twice about a priest traveling hundreds of miles to say Sunday Mass for them. But one Boy Scout a non-catholic at the time--was deeply impressed. So much so that he recounts it as one of the major turning points on his path toward Catholicism. He traveled all that way just to say Mass, says Bill Malecki. The scouts could have gone to the inter-denominational service at the Faith Journey (continued on p. 10) Celebrate Priesthood Sunday! Priesthood Sunday is a special day to honor Priesthood in the United States, especially as this is the Year for Priests. Parishioners are called to honor Christ as Priest and the men who were called to be his priests on earth. Catholic units are encouraged to involve the youth in programs where they can express their thanks for the priests in their lives. Scouters can guide their units in making a list of priests that have helped their units and families and Call them during the last week of October. 2 P A G E 2 Anne Lanphar CCS Chair Chairman s Corner Scouting is aimed primarily at teaching lifelong values to youth which, of course, is done through outdoor programs. After all no boy ever joined Scouting to have his character improved! He joined to have fun! But the adults know and understand the true purpose and, of course, duty to God is the first and foremost commitment in the Scout oath. The Scouting program is so highly successful because of unselfish adults volunteering their time, efforts and resources to bring Scouting into the lives of youth. Many adults (Scouters as well as parents and clergy) encourage Scouts to perform their duty to God through the religious award programs as well as other programs such as Chaplain Aides, retreats, patch programs and more. The Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting (DCCS) wants to find these selfless adults and recognize their efforts by presenting adult recognition such as the Bronze Pelican and the St George awards. But the DCCS Chaplain s Corner needs help to locate these dedicated people who spread the faith through Scouting. The nomination forms for these awards can be downloaded from the DCCS website (occatholicscouting.org). The completed nomination forms need to be submitted by November 1, 2009 to Father Michael Hanifin at St Clara de Asis, 2205 Avenida de la Paz, Yorba Linda, These adult recognition awards are formally presented at the St George Brunch held on Sunday December 13 th. Bishop Cirilo Flores will celebrate Mass and also preside at the award ceremony. Please take the time to nominate those people who work so hard on behalf of the Catholic youth of our Diocese. Thank you! Fr. Michael Hanifin, Chaplain, Eagle Scout This summer I was away at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron New Mexico. I arrived the day after a 14 year old young man by the name of Tim Nunn passed away while backpacking with his crew. He died of a viral infection to his heart which was unknown to him or his family. He came with his troop and they divided up into three crews of ten. His death had a profound effect on the back country and base camp employees at Philmont. The emergency medical personnel took this young man s death personally. The good news of the whole affair was the sense of community and connectedness that took place as the Philmont Scout Ranch personnel bonded with this young man s family and they reached out all the way to Minnesota where this young man was from. This summer also saw 70 young men descend upon Philmont Scout Ranch from the National Catholic Committee on Scouting. These youth traveled from all over the United States and divided into seven crews with a seminarian, priest or bishop as their crew advisor. I joined a crew half way through the trek because an adult advisor had to come off the trail due to another commitment. I spent the next five days with the crew hiking the north country of Philmont. I spent the rest of my time at Philmont working as a Philmont Catholic Chaplain. I am happy to say that approximately 21,000 Catholic scouts and scouters interacted with the Philmont Catholic Chapel this summer. Yours in Christ and Scouting,

But what about visits to Fatima and Lourdes? Or a gigantic outdoor Mass celebrated by the Holy Father? Those are on the itinerary for World Youth Day 2011, and a BSA Venturing Crew, together with students from the Youth Ministry program at Santa Clara de Asís Catholic Church in Yorba Linda, will travel to Madrid, Spain to take it all in. This Catholic event attracts young people from the four corners of the earth, says Father Mike Hanifin, Santa Clara pastor and Venture Crew Advisor. It includes concerts, liturgies, by Fr. Michael Hanifin prayer experiences, and conferences. The group comprising youth ages 16 and older--will depart from Orange County on August 8, 2011 and stop in Lisbon, Portugal to visit the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua and the Shrine at Fatima, where the Blessed Mother appeared to three young people in Other stops include the one of the world s most visited pilgrimage sites Santiago de Compostela in Spain, named for Saint James the Apostle; and Lourdes, France where they will visit the Shrine built on the spot where Our Lady appeared to Saint Bernadette World Youth Day (continue on p. 7) P A G E 3 Church Bulletin Bloopers The Rector will preach his farewell message after which the choir will sing "Break Forth into Joy." Brother Lamar has gone on to be the Lord Please welcome Pastor Don, a caring individual who loves hurting people. The sermon this morning: "Jesus Walks on the Water." The sermon tonight: "Searching for Jesus." Remember in prayer the many that are sick of our community. It s in the bulletin! Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help. Miss Charlene Mason sang "I Will Not Pass this Way Again", giving obvious pleasure to the congregation. For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs. Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get. Barbara remains in the hospital and needs blood donors for more transfusions. She is also having trouble sleeping and requests tapes of Father Joe's sermons. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days. A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be "What is Hell?" Come early and listen to our choir practice. The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon. This evening at 7 pm there will be a hymn sing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin. Lift up our Messianic brothers and sisters in Israel who are suffering during our prayer time. A Little Catholic Humor

4 P A G E 4 Philmont Conference Has Something for Everyone Packed with family fun, networking and plenty of training, this year s Scouting in the Catholic Church conference is helping unit leaders build dynamic Catholic scouting programs throughout the United States. The conference--held at Philmont Training Center in Cimarron, NM--took place June The purpose was to provide information on Scouting as a Youth Ministry. We learned about everything from improving emblem programs to increasing membership. We also came away with ideas on how to get charter unit representatives more involved in diocesan committee activities through a broader understanding of our Catholic faith. Most important, we focused on maintaining the quality of diocesan youth programs. Along the way, we also explored our own faith and made lasting friendships. By H. Piper & R. de los Reyes Philmont is a wonderful place to bring your family for a vacation. Spouses programs and age-appropriate children s activities can keep everyone involved in the fun and learning. After-class and family-day activities included square dancing, day hikes, tours of historic sites, and of course, the famous St. James Trek into the backcountry. In attendance were Father Ray Fecteau, NCCS National Chaplain; Bill Davies, NCCS Chair; John Halloran, Chair-elect; and Bishop Gerald Andrew Gettelfinger, NCCS Episcopal Liaison to the National Council of Bishops. On the final day of the conference, panel discussions featured national officers and professionals from the Community Alliance Team. The conference concluded with a Mass officiated by Archbishop Michael Sheehan of Santa Fe, NM. Information about next year s conference should be up on the NCCS site shortly at Reflections on the St. George Trek This past summer, the National Catholic Committee on Scouting held their biennial Saint George Trek at Philmont Scout Ranch (7/20 to 8/5). The Trek began at the Madonna Retreat House in Albuquerque New Mexico where 70 young people descended on the location from the various corners of the nation. After dividing into crews with two advisors (a bishop, priest or seminarian) each crew chose a Crew Leader and a Chaplain s aide and when through a series of community building exercises in preparation for the trek that awaited them at Philmont. On the morning of July 23 rd, the crews boarded their buses for the three and a half hour trip north to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron New Mexico. On July 24 th, the Crews took off on their various treks crisscrossing the back country of Philmont Scout Ranch. I arrived at Philmont on Saturday July 25 th to work in the Philmont Chaplaincy. I first encountered the Trek at the Cimarroncito Camp for their mid-trek retreat. Because Trek (continued on p. 7)

An advertising campaign featuring full color ads aims to show how Scouting can complement and strengthen parish youth ministry programs. According to its website, readers look to Catechist magazine for ideas and activities for working with youth. The magazine reaches catechists, pastors, youth ministers and other parish members. The marketing is part of an effort to get parishes and youth ministers thinking about Scouting as a vital component of their youth ministry. If your is not set to receive pictures or attachments, you can access the ad image at the NCCS home page at The September issue also featured an article about the National Catholic Committee on Scouting s Footsteps of American Saints Program. This new patch activity encourages youth to learn about individuals who have shaped the landscape of Catholicism in America. Youth and adults can work on the activities. (see page 7 for Sept & Oct ads) Religious emblems coordinators are encouraged to contact clergy, youth ministers, Scout leaders, parents, homeschooling organizations, and Girl Scout representatives to educate them about the resources that Boy Scouts, Venturing and the NCCS can offer. 6 P A G E 6 Hawaiian Catholic Scouts Participate in Canonization by Mary Adamski (published in Star Bulletin ) The nine boys from the St. Damien Boy Scout Troop go beyond the Scout oath about duty to God and country as they convene at a different church each week. They are on a mission to finance their trip to Rome for the Oct. 11 canonization of St. Damien De Veuster. At St. John Apostle & Evangelist Church in Mililani on Sunday, they sold T-shirts, key chains, medals and rosaries. They're still a few thousand dollars short of the $26,000 goal. The trip is not just for fun. The teenagers are working on badges in journalism, photography and cinematography, and "citizen of the world" categories. "They will be sharing the experience, making other kids excited about Damien and integrating their faith with their work," said scoutmaster John Fielding. The boys will carry video cameras at Damien celebrations in Belgium and Rome, and chronicle the events on Internet sites. They aim to post footage by 10 a.m. Hawaii time for school classes in Hawaii to use. The project is the brainchild of Fielding, a member of the Catholic Committee on Scouting and a Cub Scout troop packmaster. He said he and his wife, Rose, talked about the canonization, remarking that most people who will travel to it are older adults. "I said it's sad that they don't emphasize youthful participation. It's a missed opportunity to get young people excited about a big international event. So we created Father Damien Scout Troop for the occasion." Fielding discussed his idea with scouting officials and Catholic diocese leaders, then recruited at the annual summer statewide Boy Scout Makahiki. Bradley Fredericks, 13, of Aiea said: "Mr. Fielding went to the troops that looked the most professional and asked the scoutmasters for their best Catholic Scout. In my troop there were three of us, so they did a coin toss and I won. "It's going to be fun -- not only the canonization, but other stuff, seeing the pope and the monuments, the Sistine Chapel," Bradley said. "It will be cool to go to Mass there." Royce Masuda, 14, the only Protestant in the troop and a Damien High School student, will seek donations from his congregation at Kalihi Union Church next weekend. He and his father, Ross Masuda, assistant scoutmaster of the troop, said they will have a historic, rather than religious, perspective on the trip. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime event, especially since Father Damien is the first saint coming from Hawaii," said Ross Masuda. Bradley's mother, Theresa Fredericks, revived an old skill and taught the Scouts and their parents how to make rosaries out of knotted twine, adding the handcrafted prayer strings to the fundraiser wares. "We've made more than 150," she said. "It turns out that most of them are being made by the boys' fathers." T h e r e ' s not much relaxing about the S c o u t s ' schedule in their last laps to Rome. Blessed Damien of Molokai They heard guidance about Italian customs at a recent troop meeting: No shorts in church. Pickpockets swarm so don't fill cargo pants pockets with valuables. "Ciao" is only for someone you know. To become a friend on Facebook, please add Damien de Veuster to your friends list. This will also give you access to the live daily chats. I joined Crew #5 on July 30 and stayed with them until August 4. On Sunday, August 3rd our crew rose early in the morning to ascend Baldy Mountain (elevation 12,441 feet). It took our crew 3 ½ hours to make the ascent. Upon arrival at the Christopher Stilgebouer was able summit, we stopped to to reflect on his own vocation pray the rosary as an while on the trek. act of thanksgiving to God for our trek and our arrival on the summit. OF ORANGE PAGE While I was on the summit I met Christopher Stilgebouer from Hemet in Riverside County California. Christopher enjoyed having Fr. David Cruz (Archdiocese of Baltimore) as his Crew Advisor. He also liked that the trek was both challenging and faith based. Christopher was able to consider his own vocation and whether or not that God might be calling him to the priesthood. He truly enjoyed his crew s stay at Black Mountain Camp; he liked the cabin, the staff, Black Powder Rifle shooting and blacksmithing. He also enjoyed the daily exercise of Roses, Thorns and Buds. Because parish calendars fill up quickly, now is a good time to secure permission from your pastor and/or parish planning committee for this special Mass. In future issues of Footprints, we will share ideas on designing a successful Scout Sunday celebration. You can also get a jump start by reading the ideas below offered by Ed Henderson, Chaplain of the East Texas Council. 1. If your unit is sponsored by a church, arrive together & in uniform - During the service sit together at the front of the pews. This will allow the congregation to see you and make your unit more visible to church members. 2. If the church you attend does not have a Scouting program, go to Church in your Scout Uniform. Many pastors are aware of Scout Sunday and will discuss it at some point in the service. Often there will be quite a number of Scouts and adults in uniform at this service. If possible, share your plans with your pastor, rabbi, or minister so they will be aware of Scout Sunday. 3. Have your Scouts serve as ushers during the service. 4. Have Scouts serve as altar bearers during the processional. Depending on your church's beliefs & customs, it may be appropriate to bring in the colors during the service 5. Have Scouts lead the congregation in the responsive readings or as lectors when bible verses are to be read. If appropriate, choose from among several that incorporate the Scout Oath or Law. An excellent one can be found at the NAUMS website. 6. Have a display in the hallway about Scouting or present Scouting on a bulletin board. Try to sign up new members for your Pack or Troop 7. Have a Saturday Night lock in at the church, perhaps arrange a model campsite. It will attract a lot of attention on Sunday morning and many church mem-

Usually youth travel to pilgrim sites in addition to the official World Youth Day events. Then they join together with the world s Catholic young people to celebrate a gigantic Mass with Pope Benedict XVI on the final day of World Youth Day, explains Father Mike. The local celebrations begin even sooner. Prior to leaving, young people from parishes throughout Orange County will gather with Bishop Todd Brown to celebrate a special youth Mass, he says. World Youth Day is one of the legacies of Pope John Paul II s pontificate, according to Father Mike. Since the first World Youth Day in Rome in 1986, every few years these events have been held in exotic places such as Manila, Philippines; Sydney, Australia; Cologne, Germany; Santiago de Compostela, Spain; Czestochowa, Poland; and even Denver, Colorado. Father says that about 35 youth, young adults and chaperones have met to plan the 2011 pilgrimage. 10 P A G E 10 (continued on p. 1) Faith Journey outdoor chapel, but they didn t. It had to be something incredibly special for him to travel that far on that long, difficult road. It was this exposure to Catholicism through his Boy Scout troop that Malecki credits for his own faith journey. And for his lifelong commitment to Catholic scouting. Malecki, now a parishioner at St. John Neumann Church in Irvine, California, and a scout parent himself, grew up in a non-catholic family. Although my parents respected the values and morals of faith, we didn t practice any one religious belief. Boy Scouts changed that for Malecki, setting him on a new path. Bridging over from his cub pack, he found himself in a relatively inactive scout troop. At the time, my brother and I played on a soccer team. My mom talked to the other moms, who told her about this great troop they had joined. It was chartered by Saint Bonaventure Catholic Church. We started attending troop meetings, which were at the church, and I ended up joining that troop. So the journey began. Malecki remembers his first camping trip with his patrol, when he was about 12. Father Dick Kennedy brought all of his gear, which is how Malecki remembers thinking of the liturgical vestments and the chalice. I thought, having a church service is so important that these people will go to a lot of trouble for it. The journey continued with Malecki s next memorable encounter at Lost Valley, when Monsignor Sammon--the beloved Chaplain of Orange County Boy Scouts who passed away in trekked along that sorry dirt road to say Mass. It was all new and surprising to the young scout, who later had a surprise of his own. At an age w h e n m o s t The experiences you gain in Boy Scouts scouts are working on merit prepare you for leadership, he says. They can also change your life. badges, Malecki decided to earn a religious emblem. A Catholic one. I d been going to services with these guys and I wanted to see what it was all about. The Ad Altare Dei (To the Altar of God) medal is a sacrament-based program that can help scouts grow in their faith. Catholic faith. One of the rules is that Scouts must be practicing Catho- lics. The journey was getting interesting. Fortunately in Malecki s case, the rule was waived. When I received the award from the bishop, I thought, he s a busy guy. Yet he thinks it s important to recognize the scouts and all the work they ve done for their faith. But Malecki still wasn t ready to jump head first into Catholicism. In fact, he says it was about this time that his mom suggested he apply to Mater Dei Catholic High Bill Malecki Ad Altare Dei Recipient School. I wasn t really thrilled. I mean, the medals and the Mass were okay, but I said, you want me to do this every day? Malecki says his parents were beginning to see the value of a Catholic education. Again, he credits the scout program as a primary influence. While a Boy Scout at Mater Dei, Malecki was asked to lead a Cub Scout retreat sponsored by the Orange County Catholic Committee on Scouting. The road was beginning to even out, and in his junior year, Malecki thought seriously about joining the Church. He joined RCIA and was the youngest catechumen at the 1981 Easter vigil Mass at St. Bonaventure. In those days, at St. Bonaventure, they went all out, he says. The Vigil started at midnight and ended at 4 AM. It really was the conversion grand slam. Four years after Monsignor Sammon made his journey to a far-flung Boy Scout camp, Bill Malecki came home to the Catholic faith. I d been seeing these Catholic Scouts and the Catholic clergy affirming their faith, he says I saw adults as role models. Maybe they re not thinking it at the time, but they are. Now he s a role model himself as a member of his parish Knights of Columbus, and chairman of the Pastoral Council. He s also at ease with his faith, modestly showing the Miraculous Medal he wears around his neck, chatting about the most recent book about Mother Angelica, or speaking of the need for lay people to pass on the faith to future generations. The experiences you gain in Boy Scouts prepare you for leadership, he says. They can also change your life.

Have the scouts be in charge of the refreshments. Make it even more interesting by having the scouts cook some of their Dutch oven favorites 9. Present a plaque of the Eagle Scouts from the Church Sponsored unit or try to schedule an Eagle Scout Ceremony either as a part of the church service or immediately after. These are impressive events and will draw the interest of your church members. 10. Have members of the congregation who were in Scouting or are Eagle Scouts stand up. You may also want to ask Girl Scout members or those who have earned the Gold Award to also stand. 11. Use Scout Sunday to award religious emblems that your scouts have earned. 12. Present adult leader religious award recognition. These awards are by nomination only. It is a great way to recognize members of the congregation who have been involved in Scouting over a number of years. 13. If your troop has recently re-chartered, consider having the charter formerly presented by the pastor or a local Scouting official to the Church. 14. Earn your church's religious award for the unit. Most church sponsored units can earn a special recognition for unit itself that is very similar to a BSA Quality Unit Award. Check with your church body's Scouting Committee to see what the requirements for the award are for your faith. 15. If you have been a Scouter long enough, chances are you have a cabinet full of coffee mugs. Consider donating them to the church's pantry. During the refreshment break after church all of the parishioners will be drinking coffee, talking to each other, and will be looking directly at your Scouting coffee mugs for years to come - it is a great way to remind all in the church that there is a Scout Troop there. 16. Many councils conduct a Scouting for Food drive as a part of Scout Week. Let the congregation know that your troop will be collecting canned goods and other non perishable items before and after the service. 17. Conduct a service project work day after the service. There are often many projects that need help at a church and a Sunday afternoon may be a great time so do some of these. A church based Eagle Project is often a great event to schedule on a Scout Sunday. 18. Let your more responsible Scouts offer to run the church's Nursery during the service so the regular members can worship with their families. 19. Have your Troop Historian prepare a photo spread of your troop and have the pictures on display as members enter the church so they can see what scouts do. 20. Does your church give scouts a separate building to hold meetings in? Try having an open house with the scouts demonstrating various skills. Have refreshments served there so everyone will stop by after the service to see what scouts can do. 21. If appropriate, have one of your scouts deliver a message or sermon during the service. 22. Some units have a program where scouts are recognized for wearing their uniforms to church on a regular basis. 23. Construct and erect a sign on the church property noting that the church sponsors a Scout Troop, Pack, Girl Scouts, etc. with meeting times. Be sure to check for any city ordinances before doing this. The sign is a great way to build community awareness about Scouting. 24. Consider using the BSA's church bulletin covers to print the church bulletin on. Supply Division has several excellent selections that will add a lot to the service. 25. Have the Troop's Chaplain Aide offer one of the prayers during the service.
