1 Dear Friends, Standish Senior Newsletter Where Community Comes Together! Winter 2018 (207) With another new year upon us, it s always a good time to reflect on the past. Here at Standish Parks & Recreation, we ve had a tremendous year of growth and there s a lot to feel excited about for the future. I d like to thank each of you who, in the past year, attended one of our special events, traveled with us on a bus trip or participated in a program, show or lunch here at the Standish Municipal Center. You are a big part of the reason our community and our department continues to thrive. In September, we hired a new Office Administrator, Renee Prescott. Renee has hit the ground running and continues to impress us with all that she has accomplished in just a few short months. Her positive attitude and fun personality is a great fit for us as well. If you haven t already met Renee, please be sure to introduce yourself the next time you are in the office or call us on the phone. Our new bus is scheduled to arrive any day now and we re hoping to get in a few outings for you this winter. The weather is unpredictable during the winter season, but we ll try to squeeze in some local trips. As always, please be sure to register early so we can plan accordingly we often have a waiting list and can try to accommodate everyone when we have adequate notice and can arrange the details in advance. Jen DeRice, Director of Parks & Recreation Ways to Register for Standish Recreation Programs On-line ( Follow directions on the home page to Register your Household, which is only required one time. Each subsequent time you will simply log in and choose the program for which you are registering. By mail: mail with check payable to: Town of Standish Standish Parks & Recreation 175 Northeast Rd. Standish, ME In Person: Call the Recreation office for an appointment to pay in person with cash or check, or we can process your registration with a credit card over the phone. If no one is available in the rec office, you can pay at the Clerk s Office, Monday Thursday 7:30am-4:30pm. For assistance with the on-line system, please call us at REFUND POLICY: Depending upon our destination, there may be times that we are unable to offer full refunds for anyone who cancels a trip. Whenever possible, we will issue either a full or partial refund (determined by requirements of the venue we are visiting) for anyone who cancels 48 hours prior to the trip. Sorry, no refunds for less than 48 hours notice. 2 HEALTH & WELLNESS the Standish Municipal Center, Sebago Lake Room Registration prior to class is preferred and will be accepted until the day before the first class as a minimum class size is required. Anyone wishing to register after the session begins will be charged a pro-rated fee of $8.00/class for the remainder of that session or the full session price, whichever is lower. Check the website for session dates or call us at TAI-CHI Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Dates: Thursdays (ongoing, but divided into 8-week sessions) Time: 9:30 10:30 am Fee: $40 for 8-weeks or $8/class partial session. Instructor: Al Delaney LINE DANCING Dancers of all levels are encouraged to participate-it is a great form of exercise, not to mention a lot of fun! Classes will be held at Standish Town Hall. Registration prior to class is mandatory and will be accepted at Town Hall or on-line at until the Monday before the session starts. Dates: Tuesdays (ongoing, but divided into 8-week sessions) Time: 10:00 11:30 a.m. Fee: $40 for 8-week session or $8/class for partial session. Instructor: Deb Wells WHAT S NEW? Standish Hires New Town Manager! Kris Tucker, 43, previously worked as the director of Economic and Community Development in Northampton, Virginia a position he says was eliminated by the local board during budget cuts. He has since worked with a college in an interim role helping with workforce development. Council Chairwoman Kimberly Pomerleau said after the Oct. 17 vote that Tucker will start in early December and indicated that he did his homework on Standish during the application process. He studied Standish. He had all the answers, Pomerleau said. He took the time to learn everything about the town. Pomerleau also said that Tucker s willingness to establish roots in the area added to his appeal as a candidate. Tucker is originally from New Hampshire and his mother lives in Maine. That made a difference. I think he will be long-term, Pomerleau said. We are happy to welcome Kris to our community and hope you get a chance to meet him soon.

3 COMMUNITY LUNCHES ACTIVE SENIOR CITIZENS OF STANDISH This group is open to all seniors of the Standish community. No invitation is necessary, but reservations are required. Each month brings a new educational topic or entertainment for the group to share. Lunch, social and sometimes a brief business meeting are included. Join us! New members are always welcome! Dates: 2 nd & 4 th Wednesday of the month Time: 11:00 am, lunch served at 12:00 pm Location: the Standish Municipal Center (Sebago Lake Room) Lunch is catered by Personal Touch Catering for $6.00 Contact Donna Grovo: for reservations (by Thursday prior to each lunch) Joining the Standish Active Seniors for lunch or signing up for a trip is a great way to get involved in the community and meet people! OUT TO LUNCH We ll take the scenic route while you enjoy the ride. Travel with us and enjoy a chance to experience a social gathering at a local restaurant location will be a surprise, so bring your sense of adventure! Order off the menu and pay on your own cash with smaller bills helps move along the check out process. This is a great opportunity to meet new people and have a lot of fun. WANT TO HELP A CHILD LEARN TO READ? Or HELP ELDERS WITH GROCERY SHOPPING AND OTHER ERRANDS? The Opportunity Alliance has openings for Foster Grandparents and Senior Companions in Cumberland, York and Oxford counties. Adults 55 and over can make a difference in the lives of others while having a great time and earning a little extra money. Foster Grandparents mentor and support academic achievement of children in schools. Senior Companions provide companionship, local transportation and respite to elders seeking to remain living in their homes. Volunteers who commit to a minimum of 15 hours a week and meet generous income guidelines receive a tax-free stipend, mileage reimbursement and other benefits including monthly training. Optional travel insurance starting from $67 $89 is available. 5 days / 4 nights: Heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country Lancaster County is known for its scenic beauty and is home to one of the oldest Amish settlement in the US. Our guided tour of Lancaster will include a visit to the Landis Valley Living History Museum, filled with historic buildings and costumed interpreters who demonstrate the daily life of a 19 th Century Pennsylvania Dutch Village. Our trip will also include a guided tour of Philadelphia with stops at Independence Hall, Penn s Landing, and the home of Betsy Ross. We will also visit the sweetest place on earth Hershey PA and learn the story of Milton Hershey and his innovative approach to chocolate making while at the Hershey Story Museum. Last but not least, we will experience Gettysburg National Park and the breathtaking 22,000 square foot visitor center. This trip is in cooperation with local recreation departments. All breakfasts and 4 dinners are included. Lunches are on your own. Gratuity for bus driver and tour guides are not included and will be at your discretion. A minimum number of participants is required in order to offer trips and classes. Early registration will insure that your seat is reserved and you won t miss out because a program is cancelled or filled! Programs and trips take coordination and planning. The sooner we know how many to expect, the better the planning. Deadlines are generally one week prior to the first class/trip unless otherwise noted, but more notice is preferred. Some of our trips will be in collaboration with other local recreation departments including Gorham, Falmouth, Windham, Cape and others. This will help us to reach our minimum enrollment for trips requiring a motor coach or theater tickets, etc. Besides, it s fun to team up with others and meet new people! Most trips depart from Standish Municipal Center UPPER PARKING LOT unless otherwise stated. Please arrive minutes early to load the bus. Times listed are pull out of the parking lot times.
