1 Standish Senior Newsletter Where Community Comes Together! FALL 2018 (207) Dear Friends, The summer is flying by and we ve been busy here at Standish Parks & Recreation. We enjoyed another successful Standish Summer Spectacular as well as 8 weeks of summer rec camp for kids. This is our 2nd summer managing the new Rich Memorial Beach on Sebago Lake and we also kicked off an inaugural summer concert series at the Steep Falls Village Park. We hope you enjoy the new programs for fall and early winter. You ll see more details both on our website and in our new fall program guide being distributed as an insert in the Shopping Guide after Labor Day. In case you missed it, here are some details about our 2018 Standish Summer Spectacular Parade Grand Marshal, Donald L. Roy. Don has lived 65 of his 88 years in the Town of Standish. He is a 20-year veteran of the Army and National Guard who served as a medic in the Korean War and received a Bronze Star. From , Don worked as a New York Life Insurance Agent. Don has spent several years serving his community as a Standish volunteer in many capacities. He was a Boy Scout Master, worked on the Standish Rescue Unit, is a member of the American Legion who also served as president, was a Town Selectman from and is a current member of the Standish Active Seniors. Don and his wife Arlene celebrated their 65 th wedding anniversary this year. Together they have 8 children who all graduated from Bonny Eagle High School. Don is an accomplished farmer who at one time raised 14,000 broilers (chickens). We are excited to celebrate Don s contributions to the Town of Standish and we hope you will congratulate him the next time you see him! Hope to see you soon! Each subsequent time you will simply log in and choose the program for which you are registering. By mail: mail with check payable to: Town of Standish Standish Parks & Recreation 175 Northeast Rd. For assistance with the on-line system, please call us at REFUND POLICY: Depending upon our destination, there may be times that we are unable to offer full refunds for anyone who cancels a trip. Whenever possible, we will issue either a full or partial refund (determined by requirements of the venue we are visiting) for anyone who cancels 48 hours prior to the trip. Sorry, no refunds for less than 48 hours notice. 2 HEALTH & WELLNESS the Standish Municipal Center, Sebago Lake Room Registration prior to class is preferred and will be accepted until the day before the first class as a minimum class size is required. Anyone wishing to register after the session begins will be charged a pro-rated fee of $8.00/class for the remainder of that session or the full session price, whichever is lower. Check the website for session dates or call us at TAI-CHI Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Dates: Thursdays (ongoing, but divided into 8-week sessions) Time: 9:30 10:30 am Fee: $40 for 8-weeks or $8/class partial session. Instructor: Al Delaney LINE DANCING Dancers of all levels are encouraged to participate-it is a great form of exercise, not to mention a lot of fun! Classes will be held at Standish Town Hall. Registration prior to class is mandatory and will be accepted at Town Hall or on-line at until the Monday before the session starts. Dates: Tuesdays (ongoing, but divided into 8-week sessions) Time: 10:00 11:30 a.m. Fee: $40 for 8-week session or $8/class for partial session. Instructor: Deb Wells SENIOR FITNESS PROGRAM In collaboration with Saint Joseph s College we are offering a comprehensive Senior Fitness Program geared toward functional exercises to promote strength, balance and coordination. Zach Chase is a licensed athletic trainer working with athletes at Saint Joseph s College and has experience working with all ages and fitness levels. This program will be in six-week sessions and include a 30-minute evaluation at the beginning of the session. Evaluations take place before the program starts and consist of: movement screen, medical history and biometrics. Re-evaluations can be done every three months (for an additional fee) to track progress. Date: Six-week session begins in October Time: Mondays and Wednesdays 10:30 am 11:30 am Ages: 55 and over Cost: Full Session (includes one evaluation): $100 Drop-in fee: $12 per class 30-minute evaluation: $40 Location: Saint Joseph s College in the dance room. Instructor: Zach Chase, L-ATC, Assistant Athletic Trainer, Saint Joseph s College Additional Services Available: Nutrition Package: This includes is an hour-long package and includes nutritional education, BMI, body fat percentage, and hip/waist measurements. Cost: $75 One-on-One Personal Training: $75 per one-hour session. VINYASA YOGA This yoga program will be open to all levels of experience. Classes will focus on mindful movement with emphasis on breath, meditation and relaxation. Modifications will be given for all ability levels. Bring yoga mat, towel and water. Date: Fridays, September 21-October 26 Time: 6:30-7:30 pm Cost: $54 per session or $12 drop in fee Location: Standish Municipal Center Instructor: Lisa Starostecki THEATER TRIPS Enjoy door-to-door service and group ticket prices offered to local recreation departments and senior groups. 3 COMMUNITY LUNCHES ACTIVE SENIOR CITIZENS OF STANDISH This group is open to all seniors of the Standish community. No invitation is necessary, but reservations are required. Each month brings a new educational topic or entertainment for the group to share. Lunch, social and sometimes a brief business meeting are included. Join us! New members are always welcome! Dates: 2 nd & 4 th Wednesday of the month Time: 11:00 am, lunch served at 12:00 pm Location: the Standish Municipal Center (Sebago Lake Room) Lunch is catered by Personal Touch Catering for $6.00 Contact Donna Grovo: for reservations (by Thursday prior to each lunch) OUT TO LUNCH MYSTERY LUNCHES We ll take the scenic route while you enjoy the ride. Date: Thursday, December 6th Time: 6:30 pm Location: Standish Municipal Center GARDENS COASTAL MAINE BOTANICAL GARDENS Join us for the largest light show in Maine! See hundreds of thousands of lights, strung through the upper gardens in a beautiful display. The Garden Café will be open with food options throughout the grounds. Price includes entry to the garden and transportation. Max 12 Date: Thursday, December 13 Time: Depart 2:00 pm - 8:30 pm Fee: $21.00 MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS Bruce Hangen, Portland Symphony Orchestra's first Magic of Chirstmas conductor, is back to bring Maine's biggest holiday tradition to the stage at Merrill Auditorium! Get into the spirit of the holiday season with this traditional favorite Christmas concert matinee, featuring the Portland Symphony Orchestra and the Portland Community Chorus. 4 TRIPS, TOURS & OUTINGS PINELAND FARMS CAMPUS TOUR Learn about the past and present on our 90-minute guided campus tour which includes: campus history, Valley Farm, a quarter-mile of paved walkways at the perennial, herb and vegetable garden, exploration of the family farmyard, working dairy and poultry barns as well interacting with farming exhibits at the Education Center. We can enjoy lunch on our own at Commons, a creative café operated by the Black Tie Co. and highlights Pineland Farms produce, cheeses, meats and other local favorites. After lunch, we ll visit the Market to shop local goodies to take home. Min 10/Max 14. Date: Wednesday, September 5 Time: depart 9:30 am return 2:30 pm Cost: $15 HISTORICAL SOCIETY & MARRETT HOUSE TOUR Historic New England Guide and Curator of the Standish Historical Society Charles Ruby leads a special tour of two Maine historic treasures: the Marrett House and the Museum of the Standish Historical Society now located at the Tomas House. Parking and the tour will begin at the Marrett House at 40 Ossippee Trail East in Standish. Registration required. Date: Thursday, September 20 Time: 3:00 pm 5:00 pm Cost: Free, but a donation to the Standish Historical Society is encouraged FALL CHAIRLIFT RIDE AT SHAWNEE PEAK Enjoy the panoramic views of the lakes and mountains of Western Maine and the Presidential Range of NH including Mount Washington from the top of Shawnee Peak. After our chairlift ride and a brief time taking in the views towering 1,300 feet above Moose Pond, we ll continue to Bridgton for lunch at a local restaurant. Please note activity level includes some stairs and approximately 200 feet to walk to the chairlift. Min 10/Max 14. Date: Wednesday, September 19 Time: Depart 8:45 am and return approximately 3:00 pm Cost: $23 SHOPPING TRIPS Sometimes getting out to shopping areas and finding a parking space nearby can be a struggle. We ll provide transportation from the Municipal Center and you can choose from a variety of shopping trip options below. We ll provide door-to-door service whenever possible. Min 6 / Max 12 Windham Area (Shaws, Hannaford, etc): Thursday, Sept. 13 Maine Mall: Thursday, October 18 Freeport Outlets: Thursday, November 15 Maine Mall: Thursday, December 6 Windham Area: Thursday, January 3 Time: Depart 9:00 am return times will vary Cost: $5 per trip FRYEBURG FAIR Leave the driving and parking to us, and we ll drop you off right at the gate for Senior Day at the fair. Admission is free for anyone over 65. All others can purchase a ticket on site. Min 8/ Max 14. Date: Tuesday, October 2 Time: Depart 8:30 am Return 3:30 pm Cost: $6 RANGELEY LAKES REGION & LUNCH Enjoy a scenic drive by motorcoach along Maine State Route 17 through Height of Land, on the top of Spruce Mountain in Rangeley. Standing on the evergreen boundary looking out over the wide valley, the landscape is impossibly surreal and spectacular. Our destination is lunch at the Gingerbread House in Oquossoc where you can enjoy your choice of soup or salad and then a make-your-own sandwich buffet with assorted breads, cold cuts and cheeses, chicken salad, pasta salad, house made potato chips and a delicious apple crisp. This trip is in cooperation with local recreation departments and will provide transportation from each community to our meeting place to board the motorcoach in Gray. Max 10 per community. Date: Thursday, October 4 Time: Depart TBD Cost: $59 RICKER HILL ORCHARDS Ricker Hill Orchards, founded in 1803, has been growing Maine apples for over 9 generations in the small town of Turner, Maine and now has over 400 acres of apples, 15 acres of cranberries, pumpkins, a bakery, store and more. Join us on a guided tour of the packing facilities, the cider press, the cranberry bogs and the maple syrup boiler. Lunch at a local restaurant will complete our trip. This trip is in cooperation with local recreation departments. Max 14. Date: Wednesday, October 10 Time: Depart 8:45 am Return 3:00 pm Cost: $10 PARK EXPLORATION Here s a chance to get out and explore nature while getting some exercise in a group setting. We ve selected a couple of local hikes described below. Participants should be prepared to walk at your own pace between 2 and 3 miles on uneven terrain, including some easy to moderate elevation. Day two we will make our way to King Arthur Flour s flagship campus in Norwich, VT, where we will enjoy a history tour of the Baker s Store and watch bakers at work in the busy bakery. Plus, enjoy lunch on your own or simply a pastry and coffee a their popular café. This trip is co-sponsored with area recreation departments and travel will be in 15 passenger mini-busses. Date: Wednesday, 11/6/18 - Thursday, 11/7/18 Cost: $110 pp double occupancy or $160 single occupancy Scrooge Trolley, Salem, MA Back by popular demand is an overnight trip to historic Salem, MA for a trolley ride that is certain to entertain. This humorous & whimsical interactive performance re-animates Charles Dickens timeless seasonal holiday classic, A Christmas Carol, with a twist. Ride along with Scrooge as the classic tale is brought to life in a completely unexpected way. After arriving at our lodging, the Salem Waterfront Hotel, we will enjoy dinner (included) and then on to our trolley ride. A minimum number of participants is required in order to offer trips and classes. Early registration will insure that your seat is reserved and you won t miss out because a program is cancelled or filled! Programs and trips take coordination and planning. The sooner we know how many to expect, the better the planning. Deadlines are generally one week prior to the first class/trip unless otherwise noted, but more notice is preferred. Some of our trips will be in collaboration with other local recreation departments including Gorham, Falmouth, Windham, Cape and others. This will help us to reach our minimum enrollment for trips requiring a motor coach or theater tickets, etc. Besides, it s fun to team up with others and meet new people! Most trips depart from Standish Municipal Center UPPER PARKING LOT unless otherwise stated. Please arrive minutes early to load the bus. Times listed are pull out of the parking lot times.
