our baroness needs swag! (And cc and I'll put it in the Skol! feature, below.) Skol! Word fame for those in Storvik's hall Skol! For Tala al-zahra, raised to the ranks of Atlantia's nobility by His Majesty's hand at royal court at Pennsic. For the work crew who braved the torrential rains to do inventory: Mistress Graciela, Lord John West, Lady Sonya Flicker, Douglass Morton and Dan thanks to you all! Many Storviki shared their knowledge at Pennsic University. Lady Alicia of Cambion, Lady Tala al-zahra, Lady Isabella D'Angelo and your humble servant all offered classes. Storvik was well-represented in performance as well. Mistress Fevronia and I were among the volunteers providing music at the Children's Fete; Mar Yaakov HaMizrachi performed his The Book of Delight on the Main Stage. Lilies Among Thorns, a Clan Cambion ensemble, also took the Main Stage for the Known World Bardic Presentation. Storvik was also represented in the Depressing Song Competition and took fourth place. Aside from His Majesty acknowledging Lady Tala's day-long presence on the archery field in the oppressive sun and heat! - I have heard no tales of Storvik daring in war. That cannot be right! Pray send corrections to chronicler@storvik.atlantia.sca.org and we shall hear tales of war next month. Much noteworthy service was recognized at Battle on the Bay, but the wind made hearing uncertain. I will wait for the court reports before raising a Skol! for those good gentles, but know that you were seen. But a Skol! can be safely raised for Lady Sonya Flicker, our autocrat, who wisely persevered despite the threat of a major storm. It never arrived, and the weekend was glorious for over 400 GENTLES who attended! Skol! also for Lady Naila al-zarqa, the head cook, and her kitchen staff; for Lady Kunigunde von Darmstadt, drafted at the last moment to run the gate, and her assistants; for Lord Carlyle Jamesson, the Marshal in Charge, as well as the marshals and Ministers of the Lists who worked all day to provide the amazing fighting and archery scenarios that BOTB has become known for. We notably had a banner day for youth fighters, with 17 authorizations and 25 combatants! Baroness Emma West ran the Newcomer's Point and held a class for chatelaines; Caer Bear (Mistress Fevronia and Master Igor) sponsored the Performing Arts pavilion, and Lady Tala sponsored a Middle Eastern Madrassa. And though they be not of Storvik, Skol! also for our neighbors from Lochmere and beyond who led other activities at BOTB there was a mead tasting, a fiber solar, children's activites, a storytelling contest, and an Iron Commedia. 4

Lady Alicia s Cookery Booke: Pickles By Lady Alicia of Cambion Greetings! Recovered from Pennsic yet? Back home at the Manor, we have finally gotten the last of the trunks put away, the last of the bedding aired out and the last of well, most of the laundry done. It seems like every time I turn around twice, there s another pile. I didn t think I had packed that much garb! I think it is spawning when I am not looking. A pottle is equivalent to a half gallon and veriuyce or verjus is the juice of tart or unripe fruits, such as crabapples or immature grapes.1 If you cannot find verjus, vinegar will work as well. While both the Plat and Fettiplace recipes are just slightly out of period, they do document an existing in-period process. In the meantime, the late summer harvests are upon us and there is much food preservation to be done! The manor gardens have been puttering along in my absence and, while the accursed squirrels seem to have gotten the better of my cucumber plants, there may yet still be enough to put up a couple batches of pickles before the season is through. To start, add 1 tablespoon of non-iodized salt directly to the containers being used to make the pickles. This could be a mason jar, a plastic deli container or any food-safe container. NOTE: If you are unsure whether a glass container is safe for boiling liquids, do not use it! Boiling liquid can shatter glass and cause serious injury. Better to wait than to hurt yourself. Pickling is a period means of food preservation through a highly-acidic storage environment. This keeps bacteria from growing and spoiling the food. You can pickle almost anything but for this recipe we will be pickling cucumbers, or, as you will often see them referred in period, cowcumbers. In pickling you create a vinegar-based brine that can be flavored by adding herbs or other aromatics to it. Elinor Fettiplace has a recipe for preserving artichokes which uses hyssop and fennel (she notes you can preserve cowcumbers this way, too). The recipe I personally use is a family recipe, but it is still very similar to the one from Hugh Plat s Delightes for Ladies: You may take a gallon of faire water, and a pottle of veriuyce, and a pinte of bay salt, and a handfull of greene Fennell or Dill: boile it a little, and when it is cold put it into a barrell, and then put your Cowcumbers into that pickle, and you shall keepe them all the yeere. (Delightes For Ladies, Sir Hugh Plat, 1609) Next cut up your cucumbers and place into the jar. You can cut them into rounds or spears, however you prefer. You will want to pack the cucumbers in tightly, but not so tightly that the brine and aromatics cannot circulate. Be sure to cut off the blossom end (non-stem end) of the cucumber the blossom end contains enzymes which will soften the pickle while it is in the brine and nobody likes a floppy pickle. I like garlic with my pickles, so at this point I will split a couple peeled garlic cloves in half and tuck them in with the cucumbers. While garlic was used as an aromatic in period, this particular recipe doesn t use it, so feel free to leave it out, if you prefer. 1 Verjus is an ingredient that shows up in medieval recipes but it is experience its own renaissance as contemporary chefs are rediscovering it as an ingredient and you will see it on menu descriptions in restaurants.

While Plat s 2:1 ratio of water to vinegar makes for a good brine, the large quantity that he lists makes a significantly large amount of brine, moreso that you will need for a small batch of pickles. 2:1 cups of each yields enough brine for 2 1-quart containers of pickles. Combine your 2:1 water:vinegar ratio in a saucepan. You can use white vinegar for the brine but I find apple cider vinegar to be a closer approximation of the verjus used in the original period recipe. Bring the mix to a boil, then add some roughly-chopped dill to the brine. You may also use the fennel that both Plat and Fettiplace mention, or explore with other aromatics (such as coriander or bay or mustard seed) as you see fit. Unlike the Plat recipe, do not allow the brine to cool -- pour the boiling brine directly into the cucumber jars, covering the cucumbers. Cover the jar and allow to cool to room temperature before storing in the refrigerator. Slice cucumbers in rounds or spears, being sure to remove the blossom end of the cucumber. Put 1T salt into each container and fill with prepared cucumbers. Pack cucumbers in tightly, but not so tight as to prevent the brine from circulating. Combine water, vinegar and spices in a saucepan and bring to boil. Carefully pour into containers until full. Allow to sit until cooled to room temperature, then keep in refrigerator. Pickles should mature about 2 weeks. These cucumbers should marinate for about two weeks before fully infused, though that time may differ, depending on the cut and thickness of your cucumbers. You re just going to have to sample to taste readiness. I have no idea how long these will last in the refrigerator, as I have never had a batch of preserved cowcumbers hang around long enough after maturing they are just that delicious! Preserved Cowcumbers (Cucumber Pickles) Adapted from Delightes For Ladies, Sir Hugh Plat (1609) and Elinor Fettiplace s Receipt Book (1604). I had to get these cucumbers from the market (accursed squirrels!). 2 Cups Water 1 Cup Apple Cider (or other) Vinegar 2 T Kosher Salt (or so) ½ Cup fresh Dill, rough chopped (or other Pickling Spices) Cucumbers Do you have a cookery question you desperately need to have answered? Lady Alicia at ofnoimp@yahoo.com. Do you think I could pickle one of those garden-rampaging squirrels? The question really is, how does one coax them into the jar? Enjoy! Go forth and cook good food!

Awards of Atlantia To assist the populace in determining who should be recommended for which awards, the Drekkar will be profiling the various awards of Kingdom and Barony, along those who are listed as holding them (and residing in Storvik) in the Kingdom Order of Precedence (OP). If you see that a worthy gentle does not have an award, first go to the OP and search by their name they may not be listed as a Storviki. If they are not there at all, recommend them to Their Majesties, and also let Their Excellencies know. Arms The Award of Arms inducts a gentle into Atlantia's nobility. It also accompanies the Orders of Merit. The Grant of Arms is an elevation. It can be awarded on its own, and it accompanies the Orders of High Merit and Landed Baronages (after completion of their first term). The Patent of Arms is the highest distinction, and is received by those joining one of the Royal Peerages (Pelican, Laurel, Chivalry) and the Order of the Rose. Polling Orders The Orders of High Merit and the Royal Peerages are polling orders. The current members are consulted by Their Royal Majesties and asked to recommend potential new members. The final decision on whether or not to bestow the award resides with TRM. But recommendations from the populace are forwarded to the principals of the Orders, and a steady flow of recommendations for a candidate speaks well of them. September: Service Awards The Order of the Pelican is the Peerage for service. Pelicans have distinguished themselves with consistent, helpful service that impacts the Kingdom or even the Society. The Award of the Undine honors and recognizes those subjects who have distinguished themselves with exceptional service to the Queen of Atlantia. 12 Baronial Meeting Notes, June 29, 2016 Still tracking down these notes. Baronial Meeting Notes, August 21, 2016 Graciela, John West, Carlyle, Tibbie, Teleri, Sonya, Patricia, Rose, Morton in attendance Start 7:10 Officers' Reports Acting Seneschal Mistress Graciela: Transition is happening. Graciela will be seneschal as soon as paperwork is done. Exchequer: $ as of 31 July. Since then have paid $1000 for KWDMS deposit and $700 for chairs. (Receipt is with Baroness Emma.) Has info to set up PayPal for KWDMS. Upcoming: Troll check for BOTB, portajohns for BOTB. Chatelaine: Next newcomers meeting is on Friday 8/26, get garb for BOTB. At Patches' house. There will be gaming. Have been getting 2-3 people in homes, but 11 at Board and Brew, but it is expensive. Gracie: Let s find out why B&B is popular and see if we can find other places (less expensive) to do similar. Patches: Kingdom Chatelaine suggested library. Also: Took chatelaine class at Pennsic - if you re trying to recruit younger people, have to send out younger folks. Like attracts like. Maybe focus on networking aspect of SCA too, compare to Greek life. Took two dishes from inventory to be able to lend out to newcomers. Looking for donations. Chronicler: Special Edition and August issue out. Going to do profiles of awards and folks who have them to facilitate awards. Herald: Still has to get the missing baronial awards in to kingdom. Office did not transfer owing Pennsic, will now start paperwork for Rose. Quartermaster: Thanks to all who helped in torrential downpour - Patches, Morton, Dan (a newcomer!), Gracie, John. Shed inventory done, will be on Google Docs. There are pictures for photo inventory. Exchequer has files. Totes are numbered. Carlyle will make page on website. There are 3 different list fences in various conditions. Archery stuff still needs to be inventoried. Mostly cardboard targets, couldn t find netting. Baronial regalia needs inventoried. Baronial dayshade still with Badouin, will come to BOTB and be relocated. Iron Key: two kits loaned out. Not sure about rapier kit status (Ilaria still has it, Angeline doesn t have a place to put or way to transport it). Webminister: Is the IT guy. Do not expect him to do content update except by request. Has gotten Chronicler access to create posts on website, will do same for seneschal and Their Excellencies, plus the super admin account. Will give webminister account to Kingdom in case of emergency. All requested changes to website made. Youth Minister (Astrid, but Sonya reporting for her): Has warrant, needs 2 signatures from officers, will come to practice tomorrow to get them. Baronage: Baby baron on the way, due December! 12

Events BOTB: Tentative schedule done, will have meeting with Lochmere to finalize schedule on Tuesday. Morning court will be 30 min 10-10:30, evening one hour with 30 min for Kingdom, 15 for Lochmere, 15 for Storvik. Song and Dance: Still trying to get in touch with Knights of Columbus about rental possibility KWDMS: Announcement at Atlantian Royal Court at Pennsic, hoping to get into court report (haven t seen it yet). Handed out fliers at Pennsic, talked it up. Hotel: all set with the deposit. People can now call in and use website to register for hotel rooms KWDMX7. Have a budget with a worst case of 102 people and insufficient rooms to get the hotel rental down. In that case, we lose $110. Expecting to get 150 people, get a price break on hotel, would make $1300. Already have 12 room-nights reserved. Day trips/prereg is $20, at the door $30. $104/night for rooms. $60 for full event, $80 at the door. Novice: Carlyle to autocrat. Old Business New thrones supposed to be at BOTB. Have been paid for. List fence: List fencing is not horrible. Needs repainting and TLC. Better to use what we have and augment it (build additional). Have spoken with Excellencies, will be a baronial project (work day). Exchequer to release unspent funds from chair fund into general funds. (no objections) New Business Carlyle: Can we make it a policy to Spike events with minimal info and link to a Storvik website to make changes to info faster/easier? Graciela supports working in that direction. Morton: Move to hold Sept business mtg Sep 18, at Canterbury Riding. All aye. End 8:32 13
