1 EAA CHAPTER 25 MINNEAPOLIS / ST PAUL, MN JUNE 2004 Pancakes & Plane Rides Our chapter operated a Young Eagles event as part of the 1 st Annual Pancake Breakfast and Open House at Airlake on Saturday, June 5 th. Tim Jarvis of Aircraft Resource Center put together the event, which included a great pancake breakfast run by the New Market Lions by Jon Cumpton Club (including most excellent sausage), static aircraft displays, and a visit from Commemorative Air Force aircraft. According to Tim, the Lions Club served 250 breakfasts, while the Civil Air Patrol handled the parking. (Continued on page 4) Frank s Legal Eagle Ultralight by Pete Gavin My favorite area at Oshkosh is the south end of the field where the ultralights land on their short grass strip. I love watching all the different creations take off and circle around the pattern, one following right on the tail of the next. So when Frank Hanish, good (Continued on page 6) Frank Hanish and Howard Longpre cut a section of tubing for the rudder of the Legal Eagle Cleared for Takeoff June Meeting, May Minutes p2 p3 New Chapter Library, Stuff for Sale/Wanted Events/Fly-ins p7 p8

2 Cleared for Takeoff by Pat Halligan The F.B.O. at Airlake (Aircraft Resources-one of our sponsors) held a free pancake breakfast this past Saturday, and a number of our members volunteered to help. This should give us a better idea what it will take to have our own fly-in breakfast later in the summer, if we decide to try one. I will be looking for feedback from members who volunteered and from those who showed up to eat. May s monthly meeting was sure encouraging from the standpoint of young men and the future of aviation. First, our scholarship winner Kevin Blendermann did a wonderful job getting up in front of a hangar full of aviators and telling about himself and thanking us for the scholarship. Then Ben Redman from Rare Aircraft did a fantastic job telling us about the restoration of the AOPA Waco and their business at Owatonna. Ben said we are always welcome to take a tour of their facility, so if you are out boring holes in the sky some nice summer day, stop in for a visit. On the subject of high school seniors named Kevin, Kevin Halligan passed his private pilot check ride yesterday. His instructor is one of our members, Chris Damlo from Airlake Flight School. Yes, Kevin is my son, but I m not proud. Ha ha. If you have ever thought about bringing your spouse to one of our monthly meetings, you might want to bring them to the June meeting. We have Scott and Kelli Spillers from Eyes of The Wild Art Gallery coming to show us some beautiful aviation art prints and talk to us about collecting aviation art. Scott and Kelli travel around the country and set up their display at the big air shows. They will be at Oshkosh, where many of our members have met with them in years past. Of course they have their art gallery up in Maple Grove, so you can always stop up for a visit. They are one of our sponsors and their generosity helped our chapter get Mark G. his beautiful framed Mustang picture. I plan to bring my wife to that meeting early so she can enjoy a well done brat (then she doesn t have to cook and I get an at a boy ) before Scott and Kelli s presentation. If your spouse can t make it, bring a friend. Mark your calendar for June 19 th. If you haven t seen the hangar lately, you will be pleasantly surprised. The ceiling and heater have been in for awhile, and now a beautiful raised storage area is complete. So come on down and help with the Young Eagle rally that morning and then stay for the annual chapter picnic that afternoon. Kevin Halligan passed his private pilot check ride on 6/5/2004 For Kevin and all the graduates: It s your attitude, not your aptitude, that determines your altitude in life. Thanks also to members who contributed money and resources to the project. The loft will be used primarily to store chapter library materials. It looks great. Treasures report for April was circulated: Beginning Balance $5,147 Income $ 523 Expenses $1,165 Ending Balance $4,504 Pat Halligan presents Frank Hanish with the model of Frank s Beech Debonair Kevin Blendermann was introduced as the winner of our chapter s first annual $500 scholarship. Ben attends Lakeville High School and plans to study aviation at the University of North Dakota. He is currently taking flight training and has 18 hours of flight time. Congrat s Ben! It s with great sorrow that the death of chapter member Hal Steffan was reported. Hal died in an aircraft accident that occurred when he was departing Dodge Center, Iowa in his Grumman American. Hal was working on a Europa that was well along in construction. Two wings have been built to allow the craft to be either a cross-country plane or a motor glider. Pat Halligan has met with Hal s wife and her intent is to sell the project. The chapter will assist as needed. More information to follow. EAA is looking for volunteers to man work crews in preparation for and during AirVenture. Jon Cumpton and Mike Dolan talked about their experiences volunteering at the convention. Contact a chapter officer if you need information on how to volunteer. Peter Denny gave an update on the Washburn Aviation Program. Piper Jaffray has decided not to sponsor the Sonex project. Peter indicated that Chuck Doyle has connections with Piper Jaffray and that he was going to contact them to try and have them reverse this decision. Peter requested chapter members to contact Chuck and support this issue. Jon Cumpton gave a Young Eagles update. Our first 3 rd Saturday of the Month YE rally occurred last Saturday. It was a low-key event with 6 YE flown. Upcoming events include: - June 5 in coordination with the Airlake FBO Pancake Breakfast (Continued on page 4) ON FINAL JUNE

4 May Meeting Minutes (Continued from page 3) - June 9 at Osceola, WI when 40 kids are expected - June 19 in conjunction with our chapter picnic Pat indicated that he has sent numerous letters to other EAA chapter presidents inquiring if they would be interested in participating in a multiple chapter raffle for a Harley Davidson motorcycle. There has been limited response so far. Pat will continue to pursue. Frank Hanish was presented with a gift from Pat Halligan (representing all chapter members) for his 8 years of service as Chapter President. Frank was instrumental in obtaining our chapter hangar. The gift was a beautiful painted wood model of his airplane. Pancakes & Plane Rides (Continued from page 1) John Koser assembled a pilot crew consisting of Paul Pankratz, Pete Gavin, Gary Rosch, and Mark Kolesar. All together they flew thirty kids, in spite of some high overcast and gusty winds. Once again, Ron Oehler s trusty computer was cranking out Young Eagle certificates, and Jeff Coffey, Phil Shaffer, and Jon Cumpton helped John as ground crew. It was another nice event, building our Young Eagle count for the year to about 80 kids. (Continued on page 5) A reminder that the chapter plans on reserving a campsite at AirVenture this year that can be used as a gathering space in the evening for those who are in attendance during the show.. Program Ben Redman of Rare Aircraft LTD. gave a talk on how Rare Aircraft completed a restoration of a 1946 UPF7 Waco for the AOPA. The plane was ultimately given away in an AOPA sweepstakes. Ben s story of how his company got the contract, completed the ground up restoration in 9 months, and supported the project with cross-country public relations trips in the plane was entertaining and informative. Ben also completed his talk with the story of how the sweepstakes winner ultimately sold the Waco to two individuals at Anoka airport. 5 Young Eagles Day May 15 th Saturday, May 15 th marked the first of our third Saturday of the month events at the chapter hangar. It started with a nice, low-key event. Our two pilots on duty, Don Eide and Mark Kolesar, flew six Young Eagles. These kids included Greg Cardinal s daughter and friends, and acquaintances of Mark s. The usual suspects Ron Oehler and John Koser handled the ground control aspects of the event. Next Young Eagles- Osceola June 9 th On Wednesday, June ninth, we will be hosting a special event for a school group from the Taylor Falls area at Osceola. We expect about 30 children at that event. June 19 th Young Eagles Day -- Chapter Picnic On the morning of the chapter picnic, we will be running our next third Saturday of the month event. We ll be contacting pilots for that event this week. And don t forget July 17 th Young Eagles Day Please mark your calendars and let us know if you can help fly Young Eagles in July!! ON FINAL JUNE

6 Frank s Legal Eagle Ultralight (Continued from page 1) friend and longtime Beech Debonair pilot, told me he wanted to build a Legal Eagle, I was pretty excited. I got a chance to visit his new project the afternoon of Memorial Day. The LEU kit had arrived the week before. Frank had already built a workbench and was drawing full-scale blueprints for the tail feathers from the plans. Howard Longpre volunteered to help with building, and he and Frank were starting on the rudder when I stopped by. They had already built jigs (photo at left) to bend the aluminum tubing, and were starting with pieces of the rudder. They were debating how to fabricate the U-shaped channels that criss-cross the rudder for reinforcement. This is not an easy task, as the channels taper from a width of 3/4 at the post to 3/8 at the perimeter, and they are all different lengths. I began to see how much work this project was going to be. But as Frank says, half the fun is tackling all the challenges that come with such plans, where all the details are not spelled out. Frank is getting other chapter members involved as more questions arise, and each round of questions brings forth many new ideas. Frank, thanks for sharing your experience with the rest of us we will be sure to track your progress in the newsletter as the Hanish Legal Eagle takes shape. The Legal Eagle frame is welded steel tubing, similar to traditional tube and fabric aircraft. The LEU leaves the frame open, keeping the weight down and producing enough drag to keep airspeed within ultralight limits. Frank plans to powdercoat it a bright yellow color. Legal Eagle at Oshkosh, From Paul Loghry s website. From Don Sektnan This item appeared on the Short-Wing Piper Club list When I flew home from Iraq, in one of the newest 777s in service, they left the cockpit doors open, and allowed each soldier 10 minutes in the cockpit. When I said I was an A&P and interested in Tri-Pacers, the pilot had the co-pilot get out of his seat and let me sit there for about three hours, as he bent my ear about flying Tri-Pacers and Cubs. They might not cruise at Mach.92, but they are real airplanes, and have a dedicated following. Drew Schumann From May 23 issue of AvFlash Short Final While practicing for my commercial license I was in the practice area west of Cleveland Hopkins airport. I had the radio tuned to the tower and heard this... Controller: Cessna ###, what is your purpose here on the field? Pilot: I'm here for my check ride(pause) Controller: Are you a bit nervous? Pilot: A bit... Controller: Because you landed on the taxiway instead of the assigned runway... From Mike Dolan A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, "I'll serve you but don't start anything." A sandwich walks into a bar. The bartender says, "Sorry we don't serve food in here." A dyslexic man walks into a bra. Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other: "Does this taste funny to you?" Deja Moo: The feeling that you've heard this bull before. I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn't find any. A man woke up in a hospital after a serious accident. He shouted, "Doctor, I can't feel my legs!". The doctor replied, "I know you can't - I've cut off your arms!" Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly; but when they lit a fire in the craft, it sank, proving that you can't have your kayak and heat it too. ON FINAL JUNE
