1 Capital Connections Newsletter of the Friendship Force of Ottawa, Canada June Calendar 2012 General Meeting Dates for 2012 June 28* Sept AGM Nov 6 *626 Prada Private for June 28 th GM 7pm for 7:30 pm FFO Board 2012 President Pierrette Benoit VP, Membership Anna Rochon VP, Exchanges Donna Nicholson Treasurer Frank Mayda Secretary Claire Fortin Directors: Rosemae Blackwood Garry Bowes Marion Dunning Don Urquhart Message from your President The FF Canadian Conference in Québec City, May 16-18, 2012 was a wonderful opportunity to meet George Brown, FFI President, Mary Mwambay, our FFI Program Services Coordinator and, club members from across Canada. The Presidents Workshop, conference plenary presentations and members workshops were great opportunities to discuss priorities and initiatives, share information on important issues either unique to a particular club or common to all clubs, and set a course for the future. I am very proud to say that FFO has already implemented most of the best practice initiatives identified as critical to success and, is a leader in terms of vitalization initiatives. Some initiatives implemented by other Canadian clubs are quite innovative and the FFO Board will be exploring opportunities for introducing them to our club. Congratulations and a big thank you to the ED, Deputy ED, Planning Committee, night hosts, day hosts and dinners hosts for the Nashik, Pierrette India exchange. Well done!!!! Our undersubscribed exchanges to Missoula, Western Montana (Sept 5-12) and Lower Columbia, Washington State (Sept 14-21) are of significant concern to me. You will recall that it was FFO who specifically requested the exchange to Missoula based on a high number of FFO member votes, and further to an informal invitation received from that club. There are only 8 ambassadors for the Missoula exchange, and 12 ambassadors for the Lower Columbia exchange. I strongly encourage you to register for these exchanges. It is important that we extend our full FFO support to these clubs. I know I can count on you to make our club proud!!! Past President Merv Sullivan Page 1

Undersubscribed. 14 ambassadors with an assured space (10 on the Montana Exchange, 14 on Wash State Exchange); 10 spaces now available for Montana; 6 spaces available for Lower Columbia. The exchange can accept 22 persons and there are currently 20 enrolled. If you are interested in this exchange please advise the VP of Exchanges and make your application quickly. This exchange was originally billed as a one-week exchange to Solo (Surabata). Since Indonesia as literally and realistically on the other side of the world it was necessary to consider addon travel to meet the needs of the group. Meanwhile, the FFI Field Representative in Indonesia has been successful in finding a group (a potential club) who will host us in Samarinda (capital of East Kalimantan) which is the Indonesian section of the island of Borneo. Thus there will be 11 days of hosting. In addition, most ambassadors will arrive in Denpassar for several days of decompression on the island of Bali. Some are going to follow the exchange with an extensive tour of Indochina while several others will go to Myanmar. This is expected to be a physically demanding exchange but one which will expose ambassadors to an area well off the tourist track. Potentially, we will be instrumental in seeding the first FF club in Borneo. Andrew Stirling, ED Page 4

6 Technical Support/Info FFO Webmaster: Conrad Gregoire FFO Website: orceottawa.ca FFI Website: ipforce.org FFO Newsletter Editor: Jerry Valihora Friendship Force Membership Directory Contact Anna Rochon to obtain the link to view or print the most current directory. Incoming Exchange Report: Nashik India, May 27 to June 3. Culture shock, or culture delight? Twenty-two members of the Nashik India Friendship Force arrived in Ottawa for an exchange designed to show them how we live, why and what we do. A dedicated, experienced, and active Program Committee designed just what the doctor ordered. The first day consisted of the, almost, mandatory visit to Parliament, followed by a welcome dinner and a musical evening with the Big Soul Project choir dress rehearsal arranged by Diane McIntyre. At the welcome dinner, organized by the Schoutens, the guests of honour were His Excellency, High Commissioner and Mrs. Gavai of India. The High Commissioner told a few stories about growing up in Nashik, and briefly described his diplomatic career, and related some important insights about India and Canada, and the Indian community in Canada. Responding to a stated desire to experience the beautiful outdoors in Canada, a canoe paddling expedition and visit to the small town of Merrickville was the first of three planned events to get our guests outdoors to experience the forests and the wildlife. The Exchange Director, David Douglas, explained the history of the Rideau Canal and function of the locks at Merrickville. As if to provide a demonstration, the Kawartha Voyager passed up through the locks during all this. The other two outdoor events were to the Omega wildlife park, where there was much joy feeding carrots to elk, and hiking in our own Gatineau Park. Visits to museums, the Lower Town Market, and the many options from the "Doors Open Ottawa program" were undertaken. The Exchange program was purposely designed to be low key and relaxed, to allow our guests to get to know the surroundings and circumstances, and to make friends. At most of the events the female ambassadors wore beautiful saris, and the group sang and performed beautiful dances. A few of the ambassadors were experienced with Friendship Force Exchange travel, but there were a number who had never traveled outside India before. There was not only a challenging gulf of three oceans to cross with 23 hours of air travel, but there was a half-world gap in culture, the arts, customs, food, and habits that characterize the people of a city in India. We experienced at first hand many beliefs, and values, that constitute a people's way of life in a far-away country soon to be the largest in the World, and getting closer to us all the time.. Was it culture shock, or culture delight? Both groups: the Friendship Force of Ottawa, and the Friendship Exchange Group of Nashik India, did everything it took to make the visit an absolute delight to everyone. Page 6

11 Appendix A: Friendship Force Membership Report April 2 nd 2012 As of today there are 61 or 37% single members 104 or 63% couples Total membership 165 1) It is unfortunate when there was so much time, money and effort put into a project, in this case the Travel & Leisure show, and the results are not what were hoped for. The situation may change BUT my experience is if you don't get a reply in 2 or 3 days, people don't come back to it. The s went out to those that left their contact information on March 13 th. We all learn by experience. In sales you have to see an advertisement 7 before you notice, for some this may have been the first time they heard about Friendship Force of Ottawa. It may have been better to also collect phone contact information. We have not new members as a result of this project. 2) There is at least one couple that will be at the General meeting on April 23 rd and have expressed an interest in attending an information session. 3) Every inquiry either from the Friendship Force website or referral from existing members is responded to immediately with answers to questions and additional information. 4) The count capability to our website was not turned on until 15 th of March. The report of visits is available at the board meeting. 5) Mentorship story has been forwarded to Jerry for insertion into the April edition of the Capital Connection. 6) To do badges for Jane Rau and Fay McNeil and Karen McGaffney 7) A suggestion would be to give any interested members a small (5) supply of business cards to use as a referral tool.
