KILHAM NEWS Your Village Your Voice August & September 2017 Kilham Parish Council News At the July parish council meeting, Stephen Hunt, the head of planning at East Riding council, attended the meeting to discuss the concerns of both the councillors and a number of residents who attended, to the high level of proposed housing in Kilham. We currently have approved outlined planning for 55 houses at Roanne, Driffield Road and recently an outlined planning application for a further 50 houses at Webster s current location (this application is still under review), as well as a number of small developments/single builds some of which are currently being constructed. Concerns raised included: - the capacity of the existing sewerage system, the potential rapid rate of expansion, local school capacity, availability of local transport, traffic/highway concerns to name a few. The meeting was productive, informative and brought the parish council s concerns to the attention of the planning department. The parish council embraces the need to develop Kilham and fulfil the needs of its residents but in doing so we wish to retain Kilham s special character, open spaces, help prevent flooding and address issues relating to the highways. After receiving a number of complaints regarding the speeding of vehicles through the village, two councillors will be attending a Liaison meeting, organised by the Ward Councillors, to bring together representation from the police and ERYC to discuss the problem of speeding as well as addressing other local concerns. The result of this meeting will be related back to the parish council at our September meeting. Don t forget to visit the parish council website for updates. 2 The speaker at the June meeting was Rick Hudson from Bridlington who gave us an illustrated talk about the history of Danes Dyke House. As many of us had not known there had been a house there it was very illuminating. We hosted an East Yorkshire Federation Quiz semi-final and the Kilham team came a respectable third. Many thanks to our quizmaster, Richard Rawson and to Judy who sets the questions for each round. Our planned social outing was a visit to Burnby Hall but this was cancelled due to rain and we went to Langlands Garden Centre instead. The walk was again Harpham to Lowthorpe as we got it slightly wrong in April and were rained off in May. This time it was a lovely day and a successful walk with a visit afterwards to Burton Agnes Hall for tea and cake and to see the 'artists in residence', Penny and Denise. At the meeting in July Steve Haynes told us about his experiences as a toastmaster to the Queen and other aspects of his interesting and varied career. The social event was an afternoon tea (with pianist) in the Orangery at Sewerby Hall. We also had the opportunity to look round the house - a first for some of the nineteen ladies who attended. The July walk was in Nafferton. There is no meeting in August but we are going to visit Burnby Hall and also Bempton Cliffs nature reserve. In September, Janet Smart will talk about the Thuso Orphanage. The WI Computer Club is going well - Ebay, Skype and Family History Research to name but a few topics covered. So if you need help or just want to have a general chat about using your computer then come to the Old Star Kilham on Friday afternoon at 1pm for a friendly informal gathering with like minded people and expert tuition. Everyone welcome - 1 entry. There is a walk in a different location every month and we usually have a social event too. Everyone very welcome

Another new venture is the Community Pop Up Cafe in the Village Hall back room between 2pm and 3.30pm on the third Wednesday of the month. Come and have a cup of tea, piece of cake and a chat - only Kilham WI meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month in the Village Hall at 7.15pm. For more information ring or Kilham Neighbourhood Watch Area Co-Ordinator Anita Harrison ( ) Police Emergency 999 Non-Emergency 101 A vehicle was seen racing round and round the carpark at the playing field, it has been reported and the number plate noted for further reference. Anyone walking past the playing field and seeing something unu-sual please do not be afraid to report it, either to me or the police. Road racing along the Back Lane has been monitored and the person involved has been spoken to. Harvest time is here so please be very aware of the amount of big farming equipment that will be traveling to and from the fields in all directions through the village. Unfortunately, the Girl Guides have had their tents stolen from where they were locked up at the playing field. The rotten thieves that took them burned them up Green Lane, pity no-one saw that incident. Photos have been taken of the burnt-out equipment. Just be aware of any visitors residing up Green Lane, which prompts me to remind you to keep your garden tools and lawn mowers out of sight and locked up. Hope summer is going well for everyone. If I can be of any help, call me. We think the fish vendors that keep appearing in Kilham to sell either frozen of fresh fish should not be doing this, especially when we already have a fish merchant that comes every Wednesday to the village. The fish vendors are usually in a blue van, 3 males sell their fish at per pack. Please be aware that the frozen packs are not rotten.

Kilham Church of England Primary School (Mr S England ) From the school July 2017 Another Year Goes By I can t believe that, at the time of writing, we are just about to say our goodbyes to 15 Year 6 children who are going to enter the next phase of their education in September. We have children going from Kilham to Driffield, Scarborough College and Pocklington School this year, and we wish all of them good luck not only next year but with the rest of their education. It is always hard to say goodbye to children who are leaving, but to me it seems quite significant this year from a personal point of view I started in Kilham 7 years ago, just as the majority of the Year 6 children were starting their first year at school, in Reception. I have seen them grow and develop and will miss them all! We have just returned from our every other year residential visit to Newtown, Mid-Wales. We took 27 Year 5 and 6 children, stopping at Salford Quays on the way to see a very contrasting environment to our own. The children enjoyed a range of activities, from raft-building and kayaking in the beautiful Elan Valley, to climbing, abseiling, caving, and archery the children all performed very well. The weather was incredibly hot, especially for the first couple of days so hot the bus broke down on the way!

We have had a very busy term all round really. Class 4 and 5 have been rehearsing for the performance of their summer play, Mystery at Magpie Manor. This makes a change for us, as we moved our big performance from Christmas to the summer. It has really helped the children stay focused after all the SATs tests are finished and I am very grateful to the staff for their hard work to make it happen! We have a new teacher, Miss Robertson, who has taken over in Class 1 to cover Mrs Fawcett s maternity leave. Miss Robertson has made a great start, with lots of exciting and wild things happening in Class 1! I would like to wish everyone involved with our school a restful and happy summer break and we look forward to our new classes and new teachers in September!

ALL SAINTS CHURCH SERVICES AND EVENTS Church events and services for April & May (all at Kilham unless stated otherwise): August 6 th 11.00am All-age Service with Holy Communion 13 th 8.45am Holy Communion (Book of Common Prayer) 20 th 11.00am Holy Communion 27 th 10.00am United Parish Holy Communion at Wold Newton September 3 rd 11.00am All-age Service with Holy Communion 10 th 8.45am Holy Communion (Book of Common Prayer) 17 th 11.00am Holy Communion 24 th 11.00am Harvest Festival and Holy Communion (followed by Parish Lunch at The Old Star Inn) Every Wednesday there is a Midday Meditation beginning at 12noon in church. It begins with music and a short talk for reflection, followed by a period of silence, then a little more music. The church will be open from 12noon until 2pm that day so come along, meet a few folk chat and have some coffee. All are very welcome. Dear Friends In the church calendar things quieten off through August; schools are finished, there are no religious festivals and many are off on holiday (having just taken 2 months sabbatical I won t take a long summer break!).

September brings our Harvest Festival followed by our Parish Lunch in a teepee at the Old Star Inn (thank you Sara and David who will have had their wedding reception there the day before!). All are welcome of course to the service and the lunch. You will need a ticket for the parish lunch though; a steal at 12, tickets from Pam Barker , Sheila Littlewoood or the village shop. Have a great summer, with plenty of fun and relaxation, and enjoy all the good things around you. Every blessing, Glyn KPFA - Kilham Playing Fields Association We have been very disappointed by the number of incidents at the Playing Field over the last few weeks. Both the shipping containers we use were broken into and property stolen, that was then erected on Harpham Green Lane by those responsible. Padlocks and chains have been removed and graffiti has also been daubed on the Portakabin. All in all, its been a difficult time for the management of the field as costs mount in keeping it secure. The latest issue however is most frustrating. Someone has deliberately broken 2 of the swings in the play area, which is not only selfish, but dangerous to other users. I don t know which idiot is responsible for the damage, but once again more money will have to be spent on a problem that is not of our making. There have also been reports of persons walking dogs on the field, and when challenged they were very abusive to the member of the public who challenged them. The Playing Field and play equipment have been bought and paid for with money raised from the village and surrounding areas and many hours of volunteers time still go into the field to keep it running. Please help KPFA by reporting any incident to Neighbourhood Watch or the police and if possible take a photograph on your phone. David Sheader

'Ray's Voices' Kilham Community Choir Lazy, hazy days! The summer holidays and various pursuits meant a decline in numbers able to attend regular practices since the last edition of the Kilham News, so RevRay decided to postpone the concert planned for 27th July at Burton Agnes Hall. He is sorry because he knows this disappointed a number of people, including those who enquired about tickets but there was simply not enough time to reach our usual standard of performance. There was too much work to be done on our new repertoire and, naturally, we aim to be as perfect as possible. So, for now, we are just enjoying working on new songs despite holidays, illness and work schedules and will be announcing future performance dates as soon as we decide what, where and when! We have been pleased to welcome a number of new members and the Thursday evening practice continues to be a time of inspiration, therapy and fun! Steve Harris is back with us and will be waving his baton on 20th/27th July, after which we have decided to take a break during August and will return refreshed, invigorated and rarin' to go, at 7:30pm on Thursday, 7th September at The Old Star. Choir members, make sure this date is in your diary and if you are not a member (yet), but you're thinking about it, come along and see what we get up to. You can be assured of a warm welcome.
