1 President Debra Dlugosz Vice President Harriet Haire Secretary Tressa Dishman Treasurer Al Richardson Newsletter Editor Don Dishman A Truly Memorable Memorial Day Weekend! Sandy Oaks RV Resort May 22-25, 2014 The Jacksonville contingency started out with plans to caravan to Waldo - but we all know what happens to the best laid plans - first no one could agree which bridge to go over - so John and Sue said they would meet Don and Tressa at I-10 & 301 along with Deb. But Deb s birthday snuck up on her - and she had forgotten to get her tags for all her vehicles. She told us she would also meet us at Waldo. Happy Birthday June Dave Carlson - 1st Joe Ring - 7th Happy Anniversary June Gerry & Esther - 6th (52 years) Joe & Carol 7th (57 years) The Fleming Island group did a bit better - the only one they couldn t connect with was Dave and Lucy (who joined us at Waldo). Al and Della and Bob and Sheila caravanned to the restaurant - yes - FOOD was the reason we wanted to meet there! We all finally got together and enjoyed breakfast - starting Deb s birthday celebration with Happy Birthday being sung in the parking lot and a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich (thanks John & Sue). Six rigs caravanned from there to Sandy Oaks. Then the fun (?) began. Don and Tressa noticed smoke coming out from under the right front tire of the motor home - can you say replace rotors, pads and calipers? While everyone was trying to squeeze in to register, John was encouraged to get off the road, and turned too sharp - the rear right tire of his rig ended up in the ditch. Thanks to having 4-wheel drive, he was able to get un-stuck. The damage was (thankfully) only to his right rear bumper. Both Buddy and Ron had to go back to Jacksonville to get im-
2 portant forgotten items. A The Dishmans and the Johnsons stayed behind (to wait on the repairs to be finished) while the balance of the group went to dinner with Deb to help celebrate her birthday. A couple of the ladies enjoyed the pool while others in the group had a chance to sit and socialize. And that was just the first day! Friday started off a bit better. We were greeted with assorted sweet rolls, juice and coffee. Afterward, craft time prevailed as we made some cut and tie lap robes for the VA Hospital. The rest of the day passed in a leisurely manner until John and Sue found out that Louie knew how to lock the door - yep, he had jumped up and hit the lock for the dead bolt - time to call Good Sam again. A number of folks took advantage of the presence of the lock smith to get keys made, then it was time for dinner. Car pooling to Stumpknockers, we all were ready for a feast and a feast is what we had. Good food, decent prices, and lots of good conversation. Another trip to the pool for some, visiting for others. Eggs to order, sausage, hash browns, toast, grits, juice and coffee started us all off on Saturday. Sharon and Pam joined us just in time to enjoy the breakfast. Crafts with D was postponed until the afternoon, so that we could conduct our year end meeting. A trip to Homosassa Springs to see the manatees was discussed, so the lunch of Sloppy Joe's was put off until Sunday. The few folks who didn t go to the springs either rested or made Patriotic Angels (made with beads and large safety pins) with D. Frank drove in to bring us up to date on Linda. Jim and Al cooked pork chop steaks on the outdoor grill at the park - a dip in the pool made some of us happy (again!). After dinner we enjoyed playing Special Bingo - a donation to the Pennies for Pooches was taken up - and D had developed an interesting set of cards for us - PICK THE LUCKY NUMBERS is what some of us would have called it. A couple of games of sequence (5-in-a-row) finished the evening. Following a breakfast of muffins and sweet rolls on Sunday, Tressa conducted a devotional relating to Memorial Day. D held another class of crafts for those who hadn t had a chance to make an angel while the guys chatted or rested or walked the dogs. Susan and Robert, and Joe and Buddy left us around mid-day due to responsibilities at home. Our evening meal was very interesting as we decided to share left-overs or what Tressa and Don call CORN - Clean Out Refrigerator Night. Due to the weather, there was not swimming in the pool... but a rousing game of Hand and Foot was enjoyed - while teaching our two new ladies the ins and outs of the game. Early Monday everyone but the Snellings and McDades headed out, caravanning to Waldo for breakfast - or not. When they got there, it was discovered that the restaurant was closed for the holiday. Back on the road, heading to Stark - for a trip to IHOP. After a good meal, we headed for home. Thanks to our hosts, Al and Della, and their trusty side-kicks, Jim and D, for a great weekend! Bob and Sheila Garbecki - We first met Bob and Shiela at the Samboree in Eustis. Since then, they have camped with the chapter a couple of times and joined us at our Lunch Bunch get togethers. The story behind the hair - No, Bob isn t an old hippy - he is growing his hair to donate for a gray wig for cancer patients. You may remember seeing Sheila in the ring at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center taking her Cocker Spaniel, Missy, through the agility courses (February report on make-up campout after the Samboree in Eustis was canceled). Bob and Sheila also joined us (for their first visit) at the VA Medical Center on June 1st. Dave Carlson - a farmer turned packaging engineer for Avon products, Dave retired in 1988 after 31 years.
