Model A Restorers Club of Western Australia Inc. June 2016 Volume 37, Issue 6 Western Model A News C olin s Corner Don't ask where June went. All I know is one moment we were getting ready to hit the road to Darwin and the National Meet and before we knew it we were there. We enjoyed a great time catching up with old friends from all states and thoroughly appreciated the great effort the team from the NT put into making it a most successful meet. The weather was a little hotter and more humid than usually encountered at that time of the year but I didn't hear too many complaining about it. Our Club didn't come away empty handed with Wes Hartley and partner Barbara Biggs winning the people s choice for the most popular car on show. Frank Inside Farrelly this managed issue to pick up a $500 voucher in the raffle and Peter Eardley also scored a voucher of the same value, which I thought was great as he had nothing but tyre troubles on the way getting there. Great appreciation was shown on awards night for the contribution made by our club in donating funds to help the NT organizers successfully make ends meet. There were a few minor hic-ups along the way to the Meet but nothing of a serious nature apart from Brett Pollock's engine failure at Billabong on the second day out. I was sure he was a candidate for the hard luck trophy but it was not to be. Someone else beat him this time. The Rally in two years time will be in South Australia and it will be held at Murray Bridge. That is good from our Club s point of view as it is the closest Rally we ever get to attend apart from our own. Anyway it is good to be back home again. I hope to see you all at our next run and in the meantime drive safely, drive a Model A. Colin Davidson. 3 E ditor s Desk Big thankyou to those who took the time to contribute a record of their trips to Darwin. These runs known as the Swindell / Millman, Misko / Piercy and the Hartleys can be reviewed on the Club web site under Special Events. A somewhat reduced content newsletter this month simply to allow people to return from Darwin and return to normality. Model A s in WA, a series of articles compiled by Alan Jeffree (can be found on our web site) includes Emily as restored by Bill and Val Cowlin. With Bill s recent passing I thought it would be appropriate to repeat the article about Emily in this newsletter and introduce Emily s new owners and MARC members Ben Fowler and partner Kimberley Roberts Fred Manwaring. 5 M odel A s in WA - Emily 1928 MODEL A ROADSTER Restored by BILL and VAL COWLIN Colour: Arabian Sand (light) with orange wheels Registration: RO 1928 Emily Emily was built from books which were newly published at the time: Henry s Fabulous Model A Ford (1978) and How to restore the Model A Ford (1977) by Clymer Publications; Henry s Lady by Ray Miller (1982), the 9 th printing of this book. Val used Henry s Lady a great deal as she worked on the upholstery, and the colour scheme was copied from the vehicle on the front cover: Arabian sand (light), with grey strip and orange pin stripe, and orange wheels. Bill wanted a vintage car, and a friend mentioned that his mate in Bassendean had two old Fords (Model A s). Bill bought and restored both vehicles, Emily was a 1928 Roadster, and the other was a 1929 Sedan. There was a tree growing through the back, and it had been used as a chook pen. Neither had a back section, and neither was running. Val tells of using washing up liquid to help slide Emily off the car trailer they used to transport her home. They found a registration plate with the Sedan, with number CR 190, and traced it to a man named Fowler who was a rail worker in Corrigin. They were able to learn that the car had been a Roadster in 1950, and attempted to contact the Fowler family, but were unsuccessful. Bill did almost all the work restoring Emily. Most of the parts were there, except for the back panels and one mudguard. He got some stuff from Snyders. Val did the upholstery, depending greatly on Henry s Lady. The roof was done by Crawfords of East Perth. Emily as she was found (1980) Bill trying to make side panels for Emily before seeing Ron Brister In his search for back panels, Bill visited Ron Brister, who lived in Fremantle, but later relocated to Serpentine. Bill went to measure the back panels on Ron s vehicle, but Ron gave him two side panels and a boot lid which needed work. Bill worked on the parts, then primed them and returned them to Ron. In exchange for this work, Ron produced two more sides and a boot lid (heavy because made of lead filling for repairs) for Bill. Cont d Page 5

E mily - cont d Named after daughter Vicki s boyfriend s mother, Emily Fretwell, who was born in 1928, Emily was finished and fully licensed in Emily was the first Roadster restored in the club, and Bill remembers how club members lined up and investigated her on her first run with MARCWA, which was to Jarrahdale. Bill was on his own as Val was with son Lindsay at a Motocross competition. Halfway down the hill coming home, she broke down did a timing gear. Bill got a ride Emily being restored 1982 home with a club member, and returned the next day to pick her up. He thinks that is the only time she has broken down. Val and Bill Cowlin. In the Western Model A News May 1983, there is a section introducing New Members: Welcome is extended to William and Valerie Cowlin of Rockingham who have recently joined our club. They have a 1928 Roadster in the process of being restored. When purchased it was not in good condition, missing windscreen and frame, steering wheel and in need of back panels. Bill has the facilities to rebuild or make panels and would like to photograph and measure a Roadster to assist in making the panels should none be available. With Emily, Bill and Val won First in Touring Class 1928 and overall winner in Touring Class at the 1992 National Meet in Perth. Emily was trailered to Adelaide for the 1994 National Meet. They covered her windscreen carefully, but still got a chip in it. MARC members Ben Fowler and Kimberley Roberts - Proud new owners of Emily. Page 6

U pdate from the South West Run Resulting from the recent South West Run, organiser Peter Sartori has the following update: On our 10 day run through the south west, we stayed for the last night in the Collie Ridge Motel. The Manager James Clarke was very interested in our cars and at the time he took a lot of photos, any way he has had one blow up and put up on the wall of their restaurant. Peter Sartori MARC members cars photographed outside the restaurant, now feature in a large wall print within the restaurant. 8 T he Funny Bone I just got back from a pleasure trip. I took my mother-in-law to the airport. I've been in love with the same woman for 49 years. If my wife finds out, she'll kill me! Someone stole all my credit cards, but I won't be reporting it. The thief spends less than my wife did. We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops. My wife and I went to a hotel where we got a waterbed. My wife calls it the Dead Sea. My wife and I revisited the hotel where we spent our wedding night. This time I was the one who stayed in the bathroom and cried. My wife was at the beauty shop for two hours. That was only for the estimate. She got a mudpack and looked great for two days. Then the mud fell off. The Doctor gave a man six months to live. The man couldn't pay his bill, so the doctor gave him another six months. The Doctor called Mrs. Cohen saying, "Mrs. Cohen, your check came back." Mrs. Cohen replied, "So did my arthritis!" Doctor: "You'll live to be 60!" Patient: "I AM 60!" Doctor: "See! What did I tell you?" A doctor held a stethoscope up to a man's chest. The man asks, "Doc, how do I stand? The doctor says, "That's what puzzles me!" Patient: "I have a ringing in my ears. " Doctor: "Don't answer!" A drunk was in front of a judge. The judge says, "You've been brought here for drinking. The drunk says, "Okay, let's get started." A man called his mother in Florida. "Mom, how are you?" "Not too good," said the mother. "I've been very weak." The son said, "Why are you so weak?" She said, "Because I haven't eaten in 38 days." The son said, "That's terrible. Why haven't you eaten in 38 days?" The mother answered, "Because, I didn't want my mouth to be full in case you should call." Page 8

S pecial Events As a final mention, the Club web site has a new menu selection Special Events where recent and current significant events in which members are involved are listed. It can be found on this link: Special Events Darwin Nationals Swindell / Millman: Describes the journey and fund raising of our two Collie Model A members Neville and Sue Swindell in their 1929 Phaeton and Wayne and Anne Millman in their Model Ute. Both are travelling with campers. Their run was a fund raising for the Flying Doctor. Misko / Piercy: Described by Tania Piercy is the trip by the Horace and Jean Misko and Bob Piercy on their trip to Darwin. The Hartley s: Words and photos by Wes and Beverly Hartley, the full round trip. Both the Misko/Piercy and Hartley runs can be found on this LINK Kal to Kal Run: on this LINK I tem of interest - Contact from a supplier. G Pendlebury & Co Pty Ltd Gordon Pendlebury Yellow Rock NSW Just writing to let your members know that I repair worn teeth on ring gears. Over the years I have repaired hundreds for vintage cars, however I repair all makes and models from Outboard motors to Bentleys and everything in between. I have been building up the worn teeth on ring gears and recutting them back to their original profiles for over thirty years. Generally the repaired teeth are harder than they were originally. We also make up heavy duty drive plates. I have been repairing automotive components since the mid sixties. Please give me a call if further information is required. Also if any of your members own Holdens, Vauxhauls or Oldsmobiles with Hydramatic transmissions I also recondition the Damper plates as well as the input shaft that the damper mate to, I also supply parts for the Hydramatic transmissions. Holden Damper plate Nissan Rolls Royce Page 9

I tem of Interest An was received from Jean McDonald, Secretary MARC(Aust) requesting numbers of people who may want copies of the Ford Service Bulletins. Refer to the below, for details or to order contact Jean directly on the address given. The Model A Restorers Club (Aust) Inc. based in Canberra, Australia is contemplating doing a reprint of the subject service bulletins as our stock has now been exhausted. This club holds an original copy of the bulletins, and has the permission of the Ford Motor Company to reprint it. Included is an index produced by a member of this club some years ago to make them more "user friendly". For those not familiar with this publication, it does replicate much of the information included in the US Service Bulletins, however there are sections dedicated to the AAC trucks with the open drive shaft and Timken differential, as well as right hand drive specific subjects, and information on Australian dealerships. Also included are topics related to the Fordson tractor. Before the club embarks on this project it would like to get some idea of the interest from other Model A Ford clubs in Australia and New Zealand, and in this regard it would be appreciated if addressees could seek expressions of interest from their respective club members as to who might like to purchase a copy and advise approximate numbers by return . It is anticipated that the cost would be of the order of $A60 to $A70. Many thanks, Jean McDonald, Secretary MARC(Aust) 10 May 2016 Robert and Jean McDonald robjean@netspeed.com.au I tem of Interest 13th National Model A Rally, NZ Held in Napier, Hawke s Bay, New Zealand Easter Weekend 13th - 17th April 2017 Early Bird Registration form and motel options are available on our Club website and from our Secretary, Carolyn Anderson Phone: carolyn_modela.tparts@xtra.co.nz Page 10
