1 Chats News A P R I L 2 0M 1 8 A Y Volunteers do not necessarily have the time: they just have the heart - Elizabeth Andrews - Hello to everyone in Chats Volunteering employs more people than many large industries such as Hospitality, Mining or Fishing. Because volunteers donate their labour in this way, every one of us in Tasmania saves over $3,000 per annum. If so many Tasmanians were not giving almost a month of their time each year (on average) to various not for profit organisations, then we would all have to pay extra taxes to get the services volunteers provide. At Lifeline Tasmania alone we benefit from the work of over 300 Volunteers across the State, they may be talking to someone in crisis, serving customers in a Lifeline shop, visiting a lonely person in a nursing home, driving the Chats bus, hosting an activity or serving on the Lifeline Tasmania board - they all have one thing in common, they want to help us work toward our vision of - a Tasmania free from suicide where everyone meets challenges with strength and optimism. In the upcoming months you might notice that Chats has a significant number of new volunteers. We hope that all participants make them feel welcome and the team in the offices very much looks forward to working with them. National Volunteer Week is May 2018 so if you are a volunteer thank you so much, without you Lifeline Tasmania could not exist. ~ Andrew Volunteer Information We have two volunteer events happening in May. 7 P A G E 7 Under 65 Group - MONTH Activities If you would like to attend these activities but are not part of the Under 65 Group, we can waitlist you. The U65 participants have priority but we will call people on the waitlist at the last minute to fill the seats if there are any spare. U65 Hastings Caves Thursday 17 May (Full Day) Formed millions of years ago, these great dolomite caves were discovered in 1917 by timber workers. A Parks and Wildlife guide will take you on a 45-minute guided cave tour. You will discover spectacular subterranean formations including flow stone, stalactites, columns, shawls, straws, stalagmites and the unusual helicities. The cave is spacious and well-lit and there are no narrow passages. There are 500 stairs in total inside the cave, all equipped with handrails. Brunch will be had at DS Coffee House in Huonville from 10:30am until 12:00pm. Eat, drink and be merry because once we start travelling to the caves, there will be no further food stops. Bring snacks and a drink if you need to. Cave tour starts at 2:15pm.
