Having not had a holiday for a long time I headed off in July for a big one! My stepson Zane was born in the USA and his Mother (or should I say Mom) Robyn had promised him to take him back when he became 18. So off we headed around the world, first to London to catch up with my pommie family and spend a fabulous night at the Opera (Mozart Don Giovani). Then to New York City to see the sights like the famous view from the Empire State Building. After that the real adventure began. I have always loved trains so we decided to take the Amtrack train all the way from the East coast to the West (around 3,000 miles). The first part of the journey was to Milwaukee in Wisconsin via Chicago which took around 19 hours. In Milwaukee we hired a car for a few days to look around before boarding for the next leg to Sandpoint Idaho the longest part of the trip, passing through Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana names which until then I only knew from old western movies. This was scheduled to take around 30 hours but due to a small delay we got stuck behind a freight train for hundreds of miles so we arrived 10 hours late. Despite the delays we had a great time watching America roll past our window. It is a beautiful place. If you want to see a country and meet the locals I reckon the best way is on the train! After a couple of days in Sandpoint next up was Seattle in Washington State (only 9 hours this time). Washington State is rightly famous for it s mountain scenery. We borrowed a car and spent some time exploring in one of the many National parks. We even made a brief trip over the Canadian border where I was delighted to meet my first Racoon (see him below) The final part of this marathon train ride was to San Francisco and then back home to Hobart. It was a really great trip! I feel so energised and optimistic after my travels - new places, new sights, new people. 2 P A G E 2 Chats Clubs Walkie Talkies: Bush Walking Group When: Friday 5 October, 9:30am-3:30pm The aim of this group is to bring together people who have an interest in walking. Everyone will need to bring their own lunches and supplies in order to explore the many tracks around the city. This club is unfortunately not suitable for people with walkers or who have mobility issues. Where: To be Confirmed Cost: BYO lunch and $10 co-payment Movie Monday: A selection of classic movies to be shown at the Lifeline Office and a cuppa When: Monday 8 October, 1-3:30pm Chats is happy to provide this monthly activity, aimed at those of us that appreciate cinema to get together for a cuppa and enjoy the movie. This is perfect opportunity for those of you that prefer a shorter, more easygoing activity. Feel free to bring your own lunch or snacks if you want, tea & coffee only supplied. What: Breakfast at Tiffany s. This delightful 1961 comedy stars Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard. A young New York socialite becomes interested in a young man who has moved into her apartment building, but her past threatens to get in the way. Cost: Own purchases and $5 co-payment Pontville Fellowship: A Pleasant Catch-up at Pontville When: 10 October, 11am-2pm Once a month, we take a trip to Pontville to attend a traditional Anglican Church service and share lunch with the friendly and welcoming people of the St Mark s Church community. Lunch is a lovely home-cooked meal, and it s a nice chance to visit Pontville and catch up with friends. Cost: $7 and $10 co-payment Stand and Deliver: An informative opportunity to enjoy a cuppa and a different guest speakers every month. When: Tuesday 16 October, Buried or cremated. Traditional or individualised. Memorial service or Celebration of life. What kind of casket would you prefer? How to take care of those you leave behind. Our morning tea location is a true delight with our charming host Robyne in her secret café. The coffee club is a short activity designed for new participants or to encourage anyone needing extra support to build confidence attending activities or re-engage with the program after absence or illness. Cost: $7 and $5 co-payment Wheelie Good Times: Mobility Impaired Walking Group When: Wednesday 31 October, 9am-12:30pm This is a walking group for people with mobility or health challenges and is suitable for people who use walkers, canes or just need to take it slowly. You'll need to have enough mobility to access either the Chats bus or a taxi - depending on what we organise. After the walk the group can recover with a cuppa and a good gossip - doesn't THAT sound like a really good time? Where: Cascade Gardens, South Hobart Cost: Own purchases and $5 co-payment Please call ONE WORKING DAY before any activities you are booked into - even if you are providing your own transport; this way we can confirm the meeting time and location of the activity. Northern Nomads: New Norfolk, Magra, Bridgewater, Brighton, Gagebrook, Old Beach, etc. Central Cruisers: Claremont, Chigwell, Berriedale, Glenorchy, Moonah, Newtown, West Hobart, South Hobart, Mount Stuart, etc. South & East Gallivants: Lindisfarne, Geilston Bay, Bellerive, Warrane, Risdon Vale, CBD, Historical Houses Markree House was built in 1926 and the house, collections and garden all reflect the influence of the Arts & Crafts Movement and is one of Hobart's hidden treasures. The house was one of the largest single bequests ever received by an Australian gallery. Everything was left to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery for the benefit and enjoyment of the people of Tasmania. Entry Fee: $8 Narryna is a fine Georgian town house was built in by a Calcutta-based merchant licenced by the British East India Company when he set up in Hobart as a merchant, shipbuilder and whaler. It was later the residence of Hobart businessmen and women, lawyers, politicians and bankers.
