Humbug History Tour Trip Leader: Mike Drawsky, Tour Guide: Dave Burns, Date: March 12, 2016 View of the town Humbug, on the drive in. Located in the Bradshaw Mountains, 15 miles south of Crown King. First stop on Dave Burn s tour, was the remains of the town's founder, Charles Champie s home. Members attending the day s ru: Bill, Amy, Aleksa & Stefan Mihailov, Nate & Judi VanKeuren, Lee & Bev Coppage, Rob, Suzy & Adeline, Kurt Logo and Glenn McConnell. Guest in attendance: Jim Hopper, Stephanie Denman, Terry Campbell, Jim Coulter, Gary Mulholland, Larry & Donna Coe and Kathleen Hornburg. Rob, nearly bearing it all, for this year annual outhouse photo!
Humbug History Tour (Continued) History: Charles and his family arrived here in 1882 and was one of the first to find gold. He stayed on long enough to excavate a shaft and tunnel, built two stone houses, a mill site, well, and smelting furnace. One of his more profitable claims, the Llano, produced about 2,000 ounces of gold. Donna, always happy to help the photographer get the shot! Located just a few hundred feet north of Charles home was the remains of his brother s homestead.
Humbug History Tour (Continued) Dave points out the Our last stop on Dave's Humbug town tour was the remains of the Frank de Lacey Hyde home. History: A wealthy New York Stock Broker, Frank fell in love with the warmer Arizona climate and the claims that there was still plenty of GOLD to be found in the Bradshaws! The town of Humbug was pretty much a ghost town by the time Frank decided to purchase it in the early 1930's. Frank brought a couple hundred workers out to rebuild the town and a home for his family, which served mainly as their retreat. Humbug now was home to about 100 employees working for Humbug Gold Mines Inc. Mining came to a halt during World War ll. The company never made any profit but it
Humbug History Tour (Continued) did provide Frank and his family a place to escape to and unwind. The Hyde family kept ownership of the town up until Frank's wife's death in Nate & Judi enjoyed the day s tour and wonderful weather! The Hayton Family Kurt was all ready to move in! Guests Larry & Diana, from Saskatchewan Canada, spend their winters here in Arizona. This was their third run with the Mesa 4 Wheelers. The following weekend they headed back to Canada, but said they are looking forward to running with us next winter. This young Barn Oil was attracting a lot of attention.
Humbug History Tour (Continued) Adeline kept Dave on his toes, by asking plenty of questions. Lee & Bev, were finally able to attend this year s tour. Dave, Adeline & Rob Mike & Ridley barbeque up burgers and dogs for everyone.! Group photo taken near the El Pero Bonito Mine, a mile east of town and 600 feet up. Off in the distance is Lake Pleasant.
Humbug History Tour (Continued) Glenn gets excited when a bat flies by! On the way out we had three in flight. El Pero Bonito Mine After lunch, our next stop was the El Pero Bonito Mine, another major gold vain discovered by Charles Champie. It produced over 5000 ounces of gold Jim Hopper asked Dave if what he is seeing is possibly gold. Dave pulls out his magnifier to take a closer look and tells us it looks more like fool s gold. These vertical openings are blasted out when an ore vain changes direction.
Humbug History Tour (Continued) At over 6, Gary spent most of his time bent over while in the mine. Based on the height of the mine, it looks like the miners were closer to Dave s height! These wood ladders lead up to El Pero Bonito's second and first levels were the first to be mined. Dave said these levels are no longer safe to explore. The day was getting long and most had already left, but there were a few of us who still wanted to try our hand at panning Humbug Creek and Dave was happy to oblige. Jim shows he has no fear of heights or dried timber, as he walks out on this ore dumping platform. Suzy getting her first gold panning lesson.
Humbug History Tour (Continued) Remarks from some of our Humbug participants: What a great ride today. Nice and easy. Loved the history and speaking to Mr Burns at the mine. Thanks for having us. Ridley Nolan Adeline was one who wanted to stay and have Dave teach her how to pan for gold. Mike, Thank you so much for the outstanding trip to Humbug. I had a wonderful time and met some great new friends in addition to seeing new vistas and part of Arizona s history. Of course, Dave Burns was the perfect guide to bring Humbug and the early days of mining in the West to life. My only regrets were that I didn t take more pictures or bring someone with me to enjoy it too. Thank you again. Jim Coulter Another fantastic day wheeling with the fantastic Mesa4Wheelers on the Humbug run! Thank you guys for a wonderful day that will always be an awesome family memory!!! Yay Mesa4Wheelers!!! Suzy & Rob Another great day at a ghost town with Mesa 4wheelers! For Glenn, gold panning is a hobby. He was kind enough to bring a couple of pans to share with us. Rob showed the most patients, and it paid off. Having good eye sight, he was able to locate two little flakes of gold in his pan that Dave recovered in a glass tube. Judi & Nate VanKeuren Great times with GREAT people!!! Lee & Bev Ridley helped Mike out by bringing his barbeque and assisting in the cooking. Him and the boys staid for the entire day.

FUTURE TRIPS & EVENTS (Continued) OPEN INVITATION TO RUN THE RUBICON TRAIL AND DO SIERRA TREK AUGUST 2016 BACKGROUND While running Dusey-Ershim Trail last September there were several folks who mentioned wanting to run the Rubicon Trail this year. As we sat around the campfire with antifreeze coursing through our blood vessels I mentioned doing Sierra Trek too. There was generally a very positive response even after the carnage on Thompson Hill. Mike Drawsky talked with me some more and I promised to research dates, logistics, etc. and see who might be interested. DATES Sierra Trek runs from Aug th. The Jeep Jamboree is exactly the same time. Both Sierra Trek and the Jamboree are very close geographically so there is not much driving in between the two events. My suggestion is to run the Rubicon the week before (August 8-12 range) the Jamboree-Sierra Trek, take a few days off to recreate around the Lake Tahoe area then hit Sierra Trek which is up the mountains just above Truckee, CA. I would discourage doing the Rubicon after the Jamboree as the trail will probably be torn up and may be closed for cleaning and repairs. BASIC FORMAT FOR EACH ACTIVITY The Rubicon is an unstructured event, just us. We meet up, camp, drive, camp being totally self-sufficient. Three days on the trail is great with two nights camping. No rush, time to hike, explore and take in the superb high Sierra beauty. In the first day at Loon Lake and out the third day near Homewood on the NW shore of Lake Tahoe. About 17 miles of 4x4 skill building fun. Sierra Trek is a structured event. Registration is required and a fee charged to be involved in the sanctioned events. Breakfasts and dinners are included plus raffles, live music, no host bar and tons of fun. Most of the big name 4x4 off road racing supply companies are there with displays, T-shirts and goodies for sale. This is a huge event with many hundreds of folks plus some pretty wild machines not to mention the five dreaded Winch Hills and Fordyce Creek. All this at about 8,000 feet up in the forest with camping by Meadow Lake. The area is rich with early mining history, old graveyard and loads of day runs to explore. The Fordyce Creek run (5 winch hills) is the attraction but plenty of other runs are available. While porta toilets, meals and other amenities are provided we will be camping. OPTION IDEAS There may be some who want to do both events, some just the Rubicon or Sierra Trek. You know your schedule, likes and dislikes, your call. RESEARCH I suggest you take time to do your homework and look into the following. Search The Rubicon Trail. Tons of links, blogs, You Tube, etc. CAL4wheelers. Sierra Trek or Winch Hills. These searches, like the Rubicon, will bring up gobs of info. Pay close attention to the CAL4 info, they are the sponsoring group. Look at registration, safety and vehicle requirements. If you have questions, concerns or want to know more about the area please contact me. I have done both runs several times and am very familiar with the area. Maggie and I summer just north of Truckee. Reno is near for commercial flights, Truckee has a very fine general aviation airport and all services are available in that great town. All supplies, stores you name it can be had there. For those of you who know Pete Engberg and his friend Steve from the Rubicon run several years back and Dusey-Ershim last September they ll be at Sierra Trek. Also my Northern Sierra 4x4 Club will run (Sierra Trek) it too so we ll have lots local knowledge-company. My contact info. smfleming@cox.net cell Hoping this has peaked your interest. Steve Fleming
TRAL S PROGRESS ON FR42 TRAL work continues on FR 42 the Telegraph Line Rd. Today we did more brushing and planned rock-fill work in several washed out areas.
