Page 2 Garden State HOG From the Director.. Russ Hall Nothing from our Director this month From the Assistant Director.. Dennis Lawler The riding season had started. Our first ride was on April 12 th led by Joe G to Kinchley s Tavern. There was also a ride on April 19 th to West Point for a pre-season spring football event. Unfortunately, some riders didn t have reflective vests and were turned away at the gate. There was no ride the next day on Easter Sunday. There are rides scheduled for this weekend though. Joe G will be leading his 2 nd Annual Tony Soprano Run to Holsten s on Saturday, April 26 th. And on Sunday, April 27 th Tom D. will be leading a ride to the Forklift Café in Dingman s Ferry PA. We should all be aware that other vehicles are not always aware of motorcycles on the road and so we have to drive defensively. May is Motorcycle Awareness Month and we should do our part to keep others aware that we are all sharing the road. May 3 rd has two events. There will be a ride planning meeting at 9:30 at the Garden State Dealership; and, the Garden State Dealership is hosting a Spring Open House on this date as well. We hope to see good club attendance at this event. The Pompton Lakes Elks MC has made a donation of $250 to our charity child, Christian. We would like to thank our friends at Pompton Lakes Elks MC for their generosity. Dennis

Volume XXVI1, Issue 5 Page 3 Head Road Captain.. Gerry Molitor May 2014 Ride Planning Mtg. May 3 (9:30 AM) News flash - Winter is finally losing its grip on NJ and the Northeast! Please, no more cold or chilly, rainy days. Enjoyed a weekend in the 70 s, and every- thing has popped to life. Only 6 months till Polar Bear! Note that the May Ride Planning Meeting (5/3) will 9:30 AM because of the Open House taking place on that day. Parking Nazi will make an appear- ance! Very solid attendance at our planning meetings, with some new faces stepping up to make suggestions. Our current schedule is available via electronic file just request one. We are including the destination addresses, so you can load your GPS devices should you choose to return on your own. We plan one month ahead, except for vacation or special rides (State HOG Rallies). This lets the Chapter respond to interesting events on short notice. Local HOG Rallies are in July (NY State Orange County) and September (NJ Seaside Heights). The New Jersey Rally is a bit later than usual, but the crowds will be gone from the Shore. Lunch rides leaving from the Dealership every 11AM, and the scheduled Sunday rides all depart the dealership also at least so far. New Member Ride for May 3 everyone welcome, but especially the new members. Keith will return to the Dealership with the group to enjoy the Open House (2 nd mention);-) Ride safe and stay aware of the gravel & sand along the roadside! g-man Meeting Notice: E-Board: 05/12/14 Chapter: 05/21/14 LOH: TBA Maggie Moore s 7 Midwood Road & 202 South Lincoln Park, NJ

Garden State HOG Page 4 New Member Contact.. Keith Ward Hi everyone! The month of April is now gone and bike season is now in full swing It was a little slow in getting warm during April but it eventually did. We went for a ride on the19th of April to West Point for a football scrimmage and 5 of us were turned away at the gate at 11:30 because we didn't have reflective vests! The 5 of us went to Billy Joes Rib works instead. The food was excellent and on the way back we ran into the guys who were let into West Point on 7 Lakes Drive in Harriman! We resumed the ride together all tuning off at different times to our destinations. May will be a great month chock full of interesting rides and events. so please check out our calendar in this news letter! See you at the next ride; Keith West Point Ride

Garden State HOG Page 9 Members Write... RIDING WITH ANDREW The author acknowledges this rant is based on some fact, a bit of fiction and good old American B.S. Remember growing up when you did something bad and your parents referred to you by your formal first name. I have titled this rant after retired director and resident ski bum Andrew Byra AB invites everyone to his annual Vermont motorcycle ride to the Vermont ski house that he is a member of. It costs all of $10.00/night for reasons you will understand shortly. The ride is leaving Kosco HD the first week of June 2010 around 9:00am. We are blessed with a beautiful day and tee shirt riding weather. Sitting under the canopy at the dealership I encounter this guy who s every other word is an F Bomb so I name him F Bomb. Other than the usual person who is always late calling and asking the group to wait we get off to a good start. Nice ride up through the mountains of Vermont with a nice lunch stop. F Bomb turns out to be free entertainment but he is calming down. We roll into Rutland, VT a few miles from Killington and stop at the Grand Union for food, beer and booze. If you had tour pack space you made new friends. We crank them up and arrive at the ski house in less than an hour. Now the fun starts, AB is assigning dormitory type sleeping quarters in the attic. The roof beams are inches from your head in the horizontal position. No beds, prehistoric mattresses on the floor. AB points to an available space and the rookie (me) takes it. How stupid can one be, the space is opposite the bathroom where later that night they produce enough methane gas to heat the ski house for the winter. Terrible terrible night, little sleep, complete respiratory system is irritated from the noxious fumes. I cannot take it any more so I get up and head for EPA approved air space. It s raining outside and the forecast is for heavy rain all day Saturday and Sunday is looking ugly as well. That s it I pack up and head for the gas station. The gas station TV is showing rain everywhere so I start the ride home. The bottom fell out of the temperature so you need all the rain gear you have plus warm clothing underneath. I cannot be on the road for more than an hour and my feet are soaked. I stop and put on my neoprene socks which are great when you have wet leather boots. It doesn t solve the problem but it helps with the cold. The weather is miserable so I stop again at another thruway rest stop to warm up and take a break. The rest stop is full of Americader s that are not dressed for the cold. They are begging for trash bags from McDonalds to make red neck rain gear. I now head to the parking lot to resume the journey and there are two guys that look like they have moon boots. I have to check these boots out because my feet are not feeling the enjoyment of this ride. These guys are the over 70 crowd and proceed to tell me that you carry duct tape and totally tape up your dry leather boots and you can ride in the rain all day. These are the type of guys that have survival gear in the tour pack and saddle bags. They were riding Gold Wings that looked like they survived the Viet Nam war. Say what you will but they were warmer than I was. I head back on the thruway and the rain is blowing left to right. I am trying to stay in the right lane going 40mph and hope that I don t get run over. I am thinking to myself; what is AB doing about now? By now he figured out that I departed for parts unknown and my guess was that he was being offered Voodka from Adam. Word to the wise, Adam is fun to travel with but don t attempt to drink with him. He is a traveling distillery. The weather lets up somewhat approaching the toll booths around Harriman, N.Y. and the rain later stops but it is still one cold nasty day. The good news is that I make it home around 2:30pm, the bad news, the day started before 7:00am. The wife comes out to greet me and asks, what happened to your bike? The bike is filthy and has dirt streaks from the wind and rain. I candy coat the experience but she promptly tells me I am bloviating. (Look it up) Riding with Andrew sucks, what a bad experience but it is not over yet.

Page 10 Garden State HOG During the week I make contact with Andrew who proceeds to tell me that Saturday was a wash out but the Sunday ride home had little rain and if you dressed warm you were ok. Now I am wondering if he is being straight with me which I later confirmed that he was. I did earn my rookie stripe but you have all been warned. Riding with Andrew is hell. FYI- I did not have a big enough pair to go back in 2011 and June of 2013 I went to Americade and yes Andrew did go back to Vermont and it was pretty much a wash out. I am convinced that you have to have web feet to ride with Andrew and never wash your bike before riding with Andrew; rain is part of the experience. T. Deming What say you Andrew? Note: Look for my Americade trip report in the June 2014 newsletter. Ride to Forklift Cafe Great ride, and all back roads. Know where I was most of the ride, but learned some new roads as well. Very enjoyable day, though it could have been warmer. Tom is definitely the KING of back roads.
