NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM NEWS All roads lead to Bowling Green when 300 plus Corvettes rolled out from the Salt Lake Airport Hilton on Monday morning August 31, Among those were 23 Vettes from our Corvette Club of Utah. After more than two years of planning, our portion of the National Corvette Caravan 09 left Salt Lake City with enthusiasts from 7 western states to make stops in Grand Junction and Aurora, CO, Junction City, KS, Mt. Vernon, IL and on to the National Corvette Museum and the GM Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, KY. Five days of activities were planned for the 15th Anniversary Celebration and Grand Reopening for the National Corvette Museum. Attendance numbers are now in. There were in excess of 4,500 Corvettes from all over the U.S., Canada, the UK, and even the Netherlands and Australia. There were 5,290 people registered but in excess of 24,000 people were in attendance during the event. There were 1,875 new names enrolled as members to the NCM. Entertainment was not lacking while at the Celebration. Attendees were treated to a ribbon cutting of the recently completed 47,000 sq. ft. addition, enlarging the NCM to a total of 115,000 sq. ft. of space dedicated to All Things Corvette. The new addition includes Corvette Boulevard with its old fashioned main street look, a library and archives. A new Corvette Store, the Corvette Café diner and a new Conference Center which can seat 400 for dinners and accommodate 30 Corvettes for auctions and display. On tap during the five day Celebration event were technical seminars with Corvette engineers, and designers, an exhibit of rare Corvettes, road trips, autocross, drag racing, and the appearance of the Stingray Corvette concept car which also had a part in the recent Transformers 2 movie. On Friday morning Sept. 4, a meeting for NCM club Ambassadors was held in the museum s new Chevrolet Theater. The meeting was conducted by museum Executive Director Wendell Strode with Stephanie Morrill, Membership/Guest Services Manager and Adam Boca, NCM Insurance Agent also in attendance. There the ambassador Reps from the many attending Corvette clubs were given information on the status of the NCM and future plans that are in the works. A major plan now in the fund raising stage is for a nationally ranked 3 mile road coarse raceway to be built on 70 plus acres on the opposite side of I-65 across from the NCM. Earlier this year Mr. Alan Wilson, designer and manager of our own Miller Motorsports Park, spent a week with staff and planners at the NCM. The project is in good hands. 7
Funding is now the major goal requiring $1,060,000 as first priority for the acquisition of the land. This Motorplex Park will also host a ¼ mile drag strip and an autocross and skid pad area. For more see the Motorplex link on the NCM web site. On Saturday afternoon September 5th a grand concert was held in the museum Amphitheater for the greatest Beatles imitation group around. The 1964 The Tribute group performed all the favorite Beatles oldies it was like stepping back 45 years. These guys, according to Rolling Stone magazine present the Best Beatles tribute in the World. The crowd thought so too. During this 15th Anniversary Celebration the museum raffled off three new 2010 Corvettes plus $15, in cash along with additional cash drawings for pre-registered participants. Wendell Strode was quoted as saying, The tremendous success of this event says a lot about the love people have for America s Sports Car, and for fellow car enthusiasts. AUGUST 2009 BIRTHDAY BREAKFAST AND CRUISE The CCU Birthday Breakfast was held on August 22 nd at the Layton Commons Park. It was a beautiful morning for breakfast and the first chance to try out the club grill for cooking something other than hamburgers. Breakfast was good. After breakfast, a lot of us wandered the park to view the ducks and geese. The names of members with birthdays in August were read. We then departed on a mystery cruise which took us up Ogden Canyon and over Monte Cristo to Evanston, Wyoming. It was then up through Mirror Lake to Kamas for lunch. It was a great afternoon to be out driving the Corvette. NATIONAL CORVETTE CARAVAN 2009 Wow does not even describe the experience. On August 30 th, the club welcomed the Northern California, Northwest, and Idaho Caravans at the Miller Motor Sports Park. Participants and club members were treated to cart races, a parade lap, and dinner. Yes, we successfully filled the entire track with Corvettes. On August 31 st, the Caravans merged and departed the Salt Lake Airport Hilton for Colorado. No problems, even during rush hour. I was the last vehicle and the caravan was 4 miles long. At Grand Junction, the Grand Junction Corvette Club arranged expedited refueling across the street from the mall and then reserved parking at the mall. At Aurora, the Colorado Corvette Club provided dinner and breakfast at the Aurora Sports Park. The exit road out of the Sports Park just happened to be a ¼ mile and I don t need to tell you what happened each time a Corvette departed. The next two days, the club separated from the main caravan and traveled as the Corvette Club of Utah with overnight stops in Kansas and Illinois. The club maintained the tradition of getting separated in St Louis, but all managed to eventually get to the motel. The last night before going into the museum, Mid-America Motor Works hosted a pre-caravan celebration at their facility with dinner, a band, and tours of their facilities. 9
On Thursday, the Northern California, Northwest, Idaho, Utah, and Colorado Caravan merged back together at over 400 strong and with a police escort departed Illinois for the last leg to Kentucky. It was pretty neat rolling past the museum with the other participants watching. On Friday, everyone went to the Assembly Plant for a tour. It was a self guided tour that left you go through at your own pace. Most of us took 2 hours to make it through and that was with prodding from the tour guides to keep moving. We got to see it made from two frame pieces to the finished product, all colors, all options, and all models. Some people even got to start the car as it rolled out of the final inspection area. We were warned in advance that it would like it was extremely easy, but the reality is the people building the car know what they are doing. The assembly plant was easily the best part of the entire Caravan 2009 experience. I know I m ready to order a new Grand Sport after watching the Corvettes being assembled. Saturday was basically the final day of the 15 th Anniversary Celebration. Most people toured the country side of Kentucky, finished shopping at the Corvette Store in the Museum, or went through the museum and looked at the amazing collection of Corvettes they have. 10

Events started on Friday night with the traditional poker run. Saturday morning was the parade through Brigham City followed by the Car Show in Watkins Park. SEPT 2009 MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES The September Membership Meeting was held on Sept 16 th at Larry H. Miller Chevrolet. The officers presented information on up-coming events. Bob Tillotson presented information on the upcoming CCU Christmas Party and will have a sign-up and will be collecting checks at future membership meetings. He also announced that the WSCC will be doing a repeat of their Corvette s in Vegas Celebration sometime in the spring. He will be organizing a trip to the event. Lee Turner made a motion to allocate funds 45 th Anniversary Corvette Club of Utah Reunion Party and the CCU Christmas Party. He failed to get prior club officer approval of the proposed obligation as required by the bylaws and the motion was declared out of order by Paul Cox, the Club President. The Club President or any other club officer, does not have the authority to obligate club funds or allow a vote to obligate funds without the prior approval of a majority of the 13
club officers. The article outlining the requirement for officer approval has been returned under the Corvette Club of Utah News in this addition of the Gazette. Several members were upset with the motion being declared out of order and walked out of the meeting. Dave Ohlson presented the proposed changes to the bylaws. These proposed changes were developed by a bylaws committee appointed at the first of the year. They were reviewed, modified, and approved by a majority of the officers in the August 2009 Officer s Meeting. Changes will be discussed again at the October Membership Meeting and then voted on at the November Membership Meeting. Other suggested changes were proposed during the review and it was asked that they be submitted and reviewed after the election of the 2010 Club Officers. A full copy of the meeting minutes is available from the club secretary upon request. SEPT 2009 BIRTHDAY DINNER AND CRUISE The Sept 2009 Birthday Dinner and Cruise was held on Sept 20 th. A cruise departed Salt Lake City and went over the Alpine Loop to Sundance Ski Resort. The weather was perfect and the leaves were just starting to change their colors. Following the stop at Sundance, the cruise continued down Provo Canyon to Rib City in American Fork. The food was good as usual. The names of members with birthdays in September were read. Anyone can attend the Birthday Breakfasts or Dinners. It s just another chance to come out and socialize with fellow Corvette owners. WINGS AND WHEELS AIR AND CAR SHOW On Saturday, Sept 26 th, the city of Wendover held their 3rd annual Wings and Wheels Air and Car Show at the Historic Wendover Airfield in Wendover, UT. The Corvette Club of Utah participated in masse, filling the hanger and an outside display under the wing of an aircraft with Corvettes. Congratulations to Luke and Liliane Hoefnagel, Don Rosencrantz, Teddy Wardle, and Damon Young who received car show wards for their cars. Awards were presented by CCU Club Member and the Mayor of Wendover, Utah, Mike Crawford. Lee Turner was able to present a check from CCU to ALS during the Air and Car Show representing the funds he collected from individuals who supported his efforts through fund raisers. Major contributors was Liliane Hoefnagel and Connie Anderson who made and auction blankets. During the car show, there were a variety of aircraft and equipment static displays plus the history of the Wendover Airport and the training of the Enola Gay aircrew in preparation of dropping nuclear weapons on Japan. Following the car show was the air show with a variety of prop and jet aircraft, to include the F-16 Viper West demonstration team. 14
BRYCE CANYON OVERNIGHTER On Oct 3 rd, seventeen Corvettes headed out to Bryce Canyon for the last overnight cruise of the year. Traffic was light and the weather held out. The farther south we went, the sunnier and warmer it got. We took the scenic bypass down to Bryce, over the Devil s backbone and then down the Escalante Staircase. The leaves were still changing so we were treated to the fall colors as we went through the mountains near Boulder. After we checked in at the new Best Western, we headed into the park for sunset. We didn t stay till the sun went all the way down, but we got to see the changing colors and shadows. On the way out there were deer everywhere. Some of us ate at the Steak House at Ruby s and rest of us went to the new Bar G Show at Ebenezer s Bar & Grill. This is a new Cowboy Music dinner and show that just started this year. In the morning, five diehard cars headed into the park for sunrise. The clouds parted, and we were treated to a beautiful, but cold, sunrise. OCT 2009 MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES The October Membership Meeting and Officer Nominations were held on Oct 21 st at Larry H. Miller Chevrolet. Paul Cox started out the meeting by asking the members to not ask our sponsor for donations.
