Today, it presents a permanent exhibition devoted to its greatest benefactor, Beatrix Potter. Image and Reality reaches beyond the popular image to her extraordinary life and achievements. Kurt Schwitters, the German modernist, lived and worked in Ambleside. One of the most influential artists of the 20th Century, our collection of his work is of international importance. In our library visitors enjoy browsing the magnificent collection of antiquarian books, manuscripts and other displays. The Armitt is truly one of the rarest treasures of the Lakes. Grizedale and Whinlatter Forests are cared for by the Forestry Commission for people, wildlife and timber. Whinlatter, England s only true Mountain Forest Whinlatter is home to stunning views, fantastic walks, rare wildlife and adventure play. Explore the many miles of walking trails for unrivalled views across Bassenthwaite Lake, Derwentwater and Keswick. Discover Words in the Woods: A stunning trail through mature woodland and newly planted native woodland. Waymarked posts are engraved with thoughtful, poetic and sometimes humorous quotes about trees. 6 Holehird Gardens Hutton-in-the-Forest Patterdale Road, Windermere, LA23 1NP Tel: Penrith, CA11 9TH Tel: Map 19 Map 21 The Lakeland Horticultural Society s Gardens at Holehird are probably unique in being developed and completely maintained by volunteers as well as being funded entirely by donations and, in the summer months, from the sale of plants propagated from the garden. The 12 acre hillside garden includes specimen trees and shrubs, extensive rock and heather gardens, alpine houses, a walled garden and herbaceous borders. The superb Lakeland setting also contains a small woodland walk and water features. The Society holds four National Collections of Astilbe, Daboecia, Meconopsis and Polystichum Ferns as well as having a renowned collection of Hydrangea. Open all year from dawn to dusk. Contact: groups@ holehirdgardens.org.uk Holker Hall & Gardens Lord and Lady Inglewood s ancient house in the medieval Forest of Inglewood was originally built as a stronghold against the Scots. Their family has lived at Hutton for over 400 years and the house has evolved through centuries of change into an architectural puzzle with each generation leaving its mark both inside and outside. The extensive gardens with topiary and terraces, a wild flower meadow and lake, lead round to the Walled Garden which is now the main flower garden. Built in the 17th Century and in the process of being restored to its former glory, Kirklinton Hall sits on a 12 acre site that features a beautiful part-walled garden. There is an orchard, nuttery, quince grove, bog garden, duck pond and palace, pigs, a yurt, gypsy caravan and campsite. A scented rose maze and rose terraces surround the great hall; the herb garden is for traditional herbal cures. Walk through the woods to the Faerie Glen following the beck and cascades of water. Open daily - blackwell.org.uk Lowther Castle An ever-changing collection of over 30,000 exhibits tracing the development of road transport in the 20th century cycles, motorbikes, cars and automobilia. Plus the Campbell Bluebird Exhibition which pays tribute to Sir Malcolm Campbell and son Donald who between them captured 21 world land and water speed records. Highlights include full size detailed replicas of the 1935 Bluebird car, the 1939 Bluebird boat (K4), and the famous 1967 jet hydroplane Bluebird K7. The museum incorporates the Leven Valley Heritage Centre which details how life used to be at work in the local Blue Mill, gunpowder factories, iron works and woodland industries. The gardens - which hark back to the 17th century - comprise designs ancient and new, wonderful woodland and stunning views. One of the UK s largest adventure playgrounds - the lost castle sits high in the tree canopy. A historical exhibition tells The Story of Lowther. The café and shop are delicious. The world famous topiary garden, laid out from 1694, is the oldest in the world, and the cut yew, together with herbaceous borders, massive beech hedges, a pond surrounded by pleached limes, nuttery and vegetable garden provide year round interest.
