1 THE LION MAX SIMMS MEMORIAL CAMP A Special Place for Special People ANNUAL REPORT Proudly owned and operated by the Lions, Lioness & Leos Newfoundland Labrador Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp Foundation

2 Annual Report of the Foundation Chair Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp Foundation To all Lion, Lioness & Leo s of Districts N3 and N4 of Newfoundland and Labrador and all our friends and supporters. The Following report and financial statements give an overview of the Foundation s activities over the past year and provides a snapshot of the financial position of the Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp. This statement was prepared by the independent firm of Grant Thornton LLP. Special thanks to Corinna and her staff for the continued outstanding work they continue to do in the running of the camp. It is a true team effort and very evident in all my visits to the camp and from the numerous letters of support I have received this past year. The support this year from our fellow Lions Family has been absolutely tremendous. When asked for each club s support in our new endeavor of raising funds for a new playground all our Lions family stepped up to the plate. We would also like to thank our other sponsors as well Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation, VOCM Cares Foundation, ACOA, and Atlantic Diversified Transport Systems (ADTS) for their delivery of donated playground equipment from the Grand Bank Lions Club. Groundwork for the playground has begun and we are hopeful to have a new playground ready for our special needs camps in the summer of We also received support from all other fundraisers as follows: Memorial Benches, Flower Boxes and Flowers, Lion Len Small Memorial Trailway, Story Boards, Train set, Gazebo. I especially also want to thank you and the general public for their support in the quilts. We had an idea we would like a homemade quilt for every bed and we exceeded this expectation by far. This past year we had our website re-designed and is now fully functional. We had a debit terminal installed to assist campers with point of sale purchases and camp fees. The memory story boards have been installed and our VOCM lookout was completed. The dated fire alarm system panel was upgraded from a generous $35,000 donation received from the Bell Aliant Pioneers. This also included new horns and strobes, and heat detectors for each room and the attic space. Still to complete and fundraise for is the replacement of all smoke detectors throughout the building, for which I am confident will be a priority for the upcoming board of directors. Thank you for the wonderful opportunity of being your chair of the board for and I personally would like to thank my team - the board of directors, staff at the camp and all the Lions family, for all their hard work, strong dedication and commitment. There is no I in team it takes all of us together to make a difference. Again, my personal thanks to not only the Lions family but to all who have chosen to support the operation of the camp. Let s continue in our mission of WE SERVE and continue to make our camp one of our priorities each and every year. Each year brings with it New Mountains to Climb so our camp has to be foremost in our minds at all times. Respectfully Submitted, DG Lion Valerie Clarke Chair LMSMC Foundation

4 THE LION MAX SIMMS MEMORIAL CAMP INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR FACILITY A Special Place for Special People. Ownership Board of Directors The Camp is owned and operated by the Lions, Lionesses and Leos of Newfoundland Labrador, Districts N3 and N4. Ten members of the Lions family, 5 from each district, who meet quarterly each year to develop policy and to conduct the main business of the Camp. MISSION STATEMENT The Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp is to be known, as the place where all challenged individuals will receive an enriching and rewarding camping experience. A Brief History In 1981 the Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp opened its doors, and for the first time, accessible camping became a reality in Newfoundland Labrador. This was the culmination of several years of effort by many dedicated individuals and groups. Our Camp became a place where anyone could go regardless of their abilities. The majority of groups in the early years were small, but they soon grew in number to the point that bed capacity of the Camp would be inadequate to meet the needs of such a diverse clientele. As the years passed, the demands and needs of the user groups has changed. The Camp has to strive to change as well as to meet these new challenges. There have been many changes over the past 30 years. The Name Today we have a modern camping facility, which has been the recipient of the Facility of Excellence Award from the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association. There is still ongoing change to continue to meet the new challenges that lie ahead. These challenges cannot be met without the support of all the development partners that have contributed in the past especially the Lions Family of Newfoundland and Labrador. Who is Lion Max Simms? At a meeting held during the Spring of 1978, the Articles of Association and Memorandum of Association were approved. In fact, things were progressing so well the Committee saw it convenient to officially name the Camp they were given the mandate to build. It was to be The Max Simms Memorial Camp for the Handicapped. However, after some discussion over the last couple of years, the Committee saw fit to change the wording somewhat. It now reads THE LION MAX SIMMS MEMORIAL CAMP. Well, who is Lion Max Simms? Lion Max Simms was the first District Governor (D.G.) of 41- S in and again in He was a very active member of his home club, the Corner Brook Lions Club. Lion Max was the Council Chairman and was the last International Councillor appointed by Lions International. He met and chatted with the founder of Lionism, Melvin Jones, and Lion Max often made the comment that his association with Lionism was greatly enriched as a result of his meeting with our founder. He also served as Director of the Canadian Association of Lions Clubs and in 1972 he was made an Honorary Life Member of his own Club in Corner Brook.

5 Location Grounds: Across the Exploits River from Bishop s Falls at the junction of the Exploits and Great Rattling Brook. The camp is located approximately six kilometers along the Bay D Espoir Highway, Route 360, from the Trans Canada Highway, with an additional five kilometers on the camp access road. Approximately twenty-five acres of grassy meadow with fir, spruce and old pine trees. The site is leased from the Government of Newfoundland Labrador and formerly used by the Abitibi-Price Company; as a woods depot and landing for the annual log drives on the Exploits River. Building The complex was appraised in 2011 at $3,800,000. It is comprised of 18,000 sq. ft. main building plus 2 large garages and detached cottage. Facilities Sleeping areas: bath and shower areas; laundry; kitchen; dining room; sitting and TV rooms; meeting areas; games room; recreation centre; outdoor swimming pool; pontoon boat; Board room; medical room; carpenter shop; playground and hiking trails. Camp-A-Rama A weekend is set aside in late July each year for Lions, Lioness, Leos, and their families to enjoy fun and fellowship at the Camp. Frequently, this weekend has been poorly supported by the Lions Family in Newfoundland Labrador, but should be preserved as an opportunity to visit the camp and become better acquainted with the staff and board members. Please continue to encourage each other in supporting this worthwhile activity. Kitchen Capacity Our fully equipped commercial kitchen serves approximately 20,000 meals each year. In , the kitchen had a complete overhaul of equipment with the help from a grant applied for through Lions Club International Foundation. This grant was a 50/50 split for the LMSMC Foundation and Lions Club International. The cost of the project was approximately $100, We currently have 38 rooms (single, double and 3 beds per room) with a total maximum capacity of 98 individuals.
