4 EXPERIENCE The Rockefeller Legacy John D. Rockefeller s commitment to philanthropic giving created a lasting legacy. Rockefeller gave away more than $540 million in his lifetime, including funding toward medical research, addressing poverty in the South, and educational efforts for African Americans. His son, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. continued this tradition, including conservation efforts and preservation of historic sites. Union Church of Pocantico Hills Stained-glass windows by European masters, commissioned by the Rockefeller family, adorn this unassuming country church. Henri Matisse s last work, the Rose Window, and nine windows by Marc Chagall create a dramatic combination of light and color, art, and spirituality. Step inside and be inspired. 5 Kykuit the Rockefeller Estate Sleepy Hollow, NY - Kykuit was home to four generations of the Rockefeller family, beginning with the philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil and, in his day, the richest man in America. Discover Colonial America at Philipsburg Manor Sleepy Hollow, NY - Wander along a woodland path and enter the year 1750, when Philipsburg Manor was a thriving milling and trading complex that was home to 23 enslaved individuals of African descent. Step into the working gristmill, tour the manor house, visit the activity center and explore the daily life and labor of the Manor s diverse inhabitants. Watch sheep shearing, see Scottish border collies herd the flocks, pick your favorite 18 th -century outfit during Project: Colonial Runway, and try your hand at a 20-foot diameter weaving project. Cap the day off by twostepping to live bluegrass music. May 19 Saturday 10am - 5pm Celebrate Pinkster The oldest African-American holiday Step into the rhythms and get swept up in this springtime event featuring continuous performances of African drumming, dancing, and storytelling. Visitors of all ages are invited to join the parade, dance across the plank, elect the Pinkster King or Queen, and make their own Adinkra stamp designs. Sep 1-3 Labor Day Weekend 10am - 5pm CORNucopia! Where else can you indulge in sweet corn ice cream, challenge yourself in a corn maze, and play corn-y games? At the lower Hudson Valley s only corn festival! Explore the Romantic Period at Washington Irving's Sunnyside Irvington, NY - America s "Founding Father of Literature" created a picturesque estate nestled along the Hudson riverbank. Come hear about Washington Irving s storied past and how he came to be America s first internationally famous author. 9 LEARN Historic Hudson Valley is proud to introduce the Women s History Institute, an initiative designed to illuminate the significant contributions made by women in our region. The Institute will foster a deeper understanding of the women who shaped the culture and chronicle of the area, including the diverse women who lived and worked on our sites, and offer a contemporary audience the resources necessary to take inspiration from their history. July 14 Sunday 10am - 5pm Vote Like a Girl Suffrage and Citizenship in the 21 st Century at Washington Irving's Sunnyside Pay tribute to fearless women past and present at this summer celebration of suffrage and citizenship. Little revolutionaries will have the chance to make their own "radical cross stitch" crafts, learn suffrage ballads, and share poems about social justice during a visit from Susan Hood, award-winning author of Shaking Things Up: Fourteen Young Women Who Changed the World.
