4 8 Go local all year round There is a big change ahead for our area in 2015 when we must elect a new Member of Parliament. Meg Munn has been the Sheffield Heeley MP since 2001, but this time around she is standing down. Here she welcomes you to this special annual edition of Active8 I T has been a huge privilege to represent the area I grew up in as your Member of Parliament for the past 14 years. This time has been one of many positive changes for Sheffield 8. New health centres have been built, there has been a huge investment in our schools, and upgrades in our roads and street lighting. This year we can look forward to a 16m state-of-the-art leisure facility at the site of the current Graves Tennis Centre. One thing that hasn t changed is the community spirit. I want to pay tribute to the people, churches and charities who help those in need all year round and are fundamental to the fabric of our society. These local groups provide integral support to vulnerable people who have suffered from the recent erosion of our public services. It s great to see so many of them listed this year. 4 ACTIVE 2015 Guide T HE New Year is already feeling as though it is flying by and any resolutions you made on January 1st have probably already fallen by the wayside. But never fear, if you re looking for new things to do in 2015, this special Guide edition of the area s favourite publication has many ideas and suggestions for you. Whether you re looking to take up a new activity, join a local organisation or donate some of your time as a volunteer to help a worthy cause, you will find something to appeal to you within these pages. Importantly, you can also do your bit to help the local economy in 2015 by vowing to do as much of your shopping as possible in the local patch. Every time you walk through the doorway of a neighbourhood shop, call up a local professional to help you with jobs around your home, spend money at a local pub, coffee shop or restaurant, or take your vehicle to a Sheffield 8 garage, you are doing your bit to help the local economy. This sees businesses thrive and keeps our friends, family members and neighbours people in work. Here at Active8, we delight in promoting local businesses and we urge you to support the companies, both large and small, featured in our publication. Don t forget to tell them you read about their business in Active8! Mike Firth, Editor, Active8 Mike Firth, editor of Active8, pictured with the Highly Commended - Best Editorial award at the 2014 Magazine Publishers Awards Woodseats continues to be a vibrant shopping centre and a thriving hub of local business. Times, however, have been tough for the last few years. Our small businesses make a vital contribution to the local economy, giving us something different from the big shops and providing jobs for local people. With so many of them listed here in this Active Guide, there really is no excuse not to go local all year round. For many people, the New Year is a time for a fresh start. Why not try something new? You could join a sports team, make the most of our fantastic green spaces with a regular health walk, or improve your IT skills. You are spoilt for choice in this year s directory. Although my time as an MP is coming to an end, my passion for the area I grew up in is here to stay. I wish all those in Sheffield 8 a fantastic year. 7 Visit our showroom for great deals Open Mon-Sat 10am-5pm The designs were brilliant Space saving design was key to David and Debra Mottishaw s project at their Dronfield home and they were delighted with the result. Said David: Everyone involved was thorough and on the ball and it was never the case that you have to call them, they call you. The experience was stress-free and we re absolutely delighted with the finished job. Everything I had imagined... and more The team created a stunning, high-gloss finish kitchen for Holly Webster and her young family, at their new home. My new kitchen is everything I d imagined and more. I really love what Sheffield Kitchen Interiors have done, said Holly. The Heart of your home Family-run Sheffield Kitchen Interiors, at Meadowhead, was established five years ago by Paul Fish to create fantastic kitchens, bedrooms and home offices at affordable prices. The experienced team will look after every element of transforming a kitchen if required, including plumbing and plastering. The company prides itself on offering a friendly, personal service and first-class workmanship utilising the latest technology. Wonderful bedrooms too! Sheffield Kitchen Interiors creates stylish bedrooms as well as kitchens and the team created a romantic haven for Darren and Kay Wheelhouse, of Sheffield 5, paid for with money given to them by guests at their wedding. Darren said: We d definitely recommend Sheffield Kitchen Interiors to others. We wanted something to show for what we were given for our wedding and that s what we ve got. Susan s island paradise Susan Wragg, of High Green, chose contrasting sage and cream painted solid wood shaker doors for the dream kitchen she d always wanted. I m just so happy with everything Sheffield Kitchen Interiors did. I love how much easier things are when I m cooking. Everything went smoothly, from start to finish, and they made sure I got exactly what I wanted, she commented. Motorisation is a growing market for blinds, both in terms of a child safe solution, but also as home automation increases in popularity. Whether it s a simple battery operation, or a fully wired- in option, you can operate your blinds at the press of a button. Co-Owner Maxine says the trend for motorisation has been increasing over the last few years- especially since child safety regulations changed early last year. Battery operation, in particular, allows a customer to upgrade to motorisation without any excessive work to channel wires, or extra electrical work to connect to a power source She continues most blinds can be battery operated, and an upgrade starts from as little as (dependant on the blind you choose) on top of the normal price of a blind. Whether it s for a child s room, or a hard-to-reach window, motorisation offers a safe and practical solution to shading your room As always, Bespoke Blinds & Poles showcase multiple motorised blinds and curtain rails, can talk you through your options, and let you try them out; everyone likes a remote control! follow us on Facebook 6 Hutcliffe Wood Rd Sheffield S8 0EX

12 8 2015: My special year Brave Brian Jackson is hoping he has discovered a short cut to success with his fund-raising for a very worthy cause. Deborah Wain reports I F you re feeling a bit chilly around the knees, spare a thought for Brian Jackson. The granddad, from Greenhill, has pledged to wear shorts every day during 2015 to raise funds for the Sheffield-based Motor Neurone Disease Association. Come snow, hail, rain or gales, Brian will, waist-downwards, be dressed more for the beach than nearby Beauchief. And supporters will be closely following his efforts on social media under the banner of BareLegsBrian. While Brian s campaign is raising smiles, it has come about through the sad loss of his wife Chris from MND - a rapidly developing disease affecting the motor nerve cells which leaves sufferers unable to walk, talk and ultimately to breathe. Chris, a retired teacher, died at home in November, 2012, 16 months after she was diagnosed. The couple had been married for 43 years with two sons and five grandsons. Brian, who also worked as a teacher, said last summer he had decided to become more active in the fight against MND and came up with the shorts challenge. Money donated or pledged so far totals 600, putting him well on the way to achieving his 1,000 target. Brian said: We had a lot of support from MNDA during Chris's illness and, as well as doing the shorts challenge I m going to train to be a visitor with the charity to help other families affected. It feels strange wearing shorts when everyone else is bundled up against the cold and I ve had one or two odd looks, but I ve already surpassed my original target of raising 500. Five people die from MND every day in the UK. The causes are still not understood. You can find out more or donate to Brian s campaign by visiting Keep up to date on his challenge by following BarelegsBrian on Facebook and Twitter. Brian Jackson will have the most famous knees in Sheffield throughout 2015 If you enjoy reading, you ll love Carol Smith s plan to boost the coffers of her favourite charity. Mike Firth explains 12 C AROL Smith s ambition for 2015 is to recruit dozens of local businesses willing to embrace her charity Book Box idea. Having already raised in the region of 8,900 for the Alzheimer s Society over the past decade through regular book sales, she is now looking to reach a wider audience with her bargain books, which sell at just 1 a copy. Explained Carol, of Crawshaw Grove: I am approaching local businesses where people visit for leisure or where there is a waiting area, asking whether the owners would be happy to host a box of books on their premises. Several local businesses - including Active8 - have been happy to take Carol up on her fund-raising idea. Books are generally novels, biographies or autobiographies - and they are all in good condition. Carol, whose mum has been an Alzheimer s sufferer for 16 years, has built up a large stock of titles over the years, but she is always happy to receive donations for books. She can be contacted on or at caroljunesmith@hotmail.com And if you re a book fan, why not call in at the Active8 office at 24 Hutcliffe Wood Road to inspect the Book Box? Carol Smith stocks up on titles for one of her Book Boxes

13 contemporary traditional modern Fresh new look When Donna and Mick Merrill moved into their detached house in Totley at the end of last year, upgrading its four bedrooms was a priority. But the couple, both company directors, immediately knew which business to call in to do the bespok e work Supafit Bedrooms & Kitchens. Supafit had undertaken an impressive project at their previous home back in The speed at which Supafit could car ry out the design and installation work met the Merrills needs too. Within just a few weeks of their move-in date, work on the bedrooms was underway and the entire contract was completed in about three weeks. The master bedroom, rooms belonging to Donna and Mick s sons Ben, 20, and Jacob, 17, and the guest bedroom have all been given a fresh, luxurious look by Supafit. Each boasts co-ordinated bed bases, head boards, fitted wardrobes and other furniture. The impact is immediate and worthy of the house s stunning aspect with majestic views of Abbeydale and Ecclesall. Donna said: When we moved in, things were a bit chaotic and we had no bedroom furniture. I could have looked around but I went to Supafit as they had done such a good job for us before. It was a good deal and I liked the speed at which the work was done from the order going in. Supafit s Martin Backhouse designed some of the rooms around furniture transferred from the Merrills former home, which they wanted to keep. For the master bedroom, he incorporated Donna s request for a high-gloss black panel to run acr oss the middle of the wood-effect furniture. I wanted something different and I m pleased with the result, said Donna. Donna had particular praise for Chris, who carried out the fitting work in the main room. He was quick, cleaned up after himself and a nice, friendly lad. Of Supafit, Donna added: I d recommend them to anyone. They are a pleasure to work with. Supafit Bedrooms & Kitchens, run by Martin and his wife Jayne, has been designing, producing and fitting made-to-measure bedrooms for over 20 years with a reputation for high quality products and exacting customer service at a competitive price. The high gloss black panel requested by Donna makes a striking feature of the furniture in the master bedroom Unit 5, Heeley Business Centre, Guernsey Road, Sheffield S2 4HG Beech Works, Wreakes Lane, Dronfield S18 1PN Designed, manufactured & fitted to your own personal requirements

Garrett Have you had a post-christmas declutter and found some unwanted gold, silver or jewellery that you d almost forgotten about? Help is at hand from Woodseats D.W. Garrett, where owner David is ready to of fer expert advice and a fair price, if you decide to sell. All manner of items are brought in to the shop, in Chesterfield Road, often leading to owners walking away with an unexpected windfall. Some are objects bequeathed following a bereavement that have been laid away. David, who has more than 40 years experience in the business said: It can be years after someone has inherited an item that they call in to find out what it is and whether it s of any value. Often customers won t know where to start and this is a good first point of contact. If items are in a specialist field and I can t help, I can pass them on to specialist traders. It really is a case that the old tin or bag sitting in your wardrobe could possibly contain something special and we do get Antiques Roadshow moments here at Garrett s! David continued that although he's been in the business a long time, he still enjoys being able to pass on good news. "It s welcomed at any time but, at this time of year when money can be tight, it s especially appreciated, he added. More unusual items taken into Garrett s recently have included a Georgian marrow spoon, for scooping out bone marrow, a letter-opener with a horn handle and a 1920s pedometer. "It's amazing what finds its way to us. The oldest item brought in was a scarab from an Egyptian tomb which had been made into a piece of 1930s jewellery!" 17

They had been married for over 50 years and were a rather old fashioned couple. David owned all of the house and most of the savings were in his name. All together he had 350,000. But he left no will at all. By the time he died Mary was struggling with her health and her children came to see me with Mary to ask our advice. The rules have recently changed when someone dies without a will (intestate). If they leave a husband or wife and children, the spouse automatically inherits the first 250,000 and half of the rest outright. Mary would therefore receive 300,000 and the children 50,000 between them. However this is not really what Mary was wanting. Mary was worried about inheriting the house as in the future she may well need to go into a nursing home. I explained to them that although the intestacy rules are not flexible, it is always possible to do a Deed of Variation of those rules, provided that all the beneficiaries who would otherwise inherit agree and it is done within two years of the death. I advised Mary to change the way she inherits the house from David so that it is held in a property trust. This will give Mary all the rights to live in the house as long as she can, and even to move to another house of her choice if she wishes. But if it is sold because she needs care the house will be sold and go to her children. This will still leave Mary with the savings she has inherited giving her independence. A Deed of Variation is efficient for tax purposes it is treated as if David had written a will himself. And it can change who inherits Rosalind Watchorn whether there is a will or not. However it may not always be successful in diverting assets which are being assessed when someone needs care. For example if Mary could no longer do a will, or if she were already in or about to go into care, such a Deed could be challenged by the Local Authority. Taking advice in your lifetime to get your affairs in order is always the best way but failing that it may not be too late to sort things out afterwards Rosalind Watchorn Solicitors are at 10 Kenwood Park Road Sheffield S7 1NF. 21 St Thomas of Canterbury School Introducing our new Nursery with places available for 3-4 year old children from September St Thomas of Canterbury School is a Catholic Voluntary Academy for girls and boys of primary school age (3-11 years old). This is a really special place and a true learning community with shared values. The community is made up of our wonderful children, their families, our parishes and our committed team of staff. We are incredibly excited to be extending our age range as we are opening a nursery in September 2015 for three and four year old children. Our school was recently judged by Ofsted to be Outstanding in all areas, including our Early Years Foundation Stage, where inspectors found that children make rapid and outstanding progress and enter Year 1 with development often higher than expected of children of the same age. Ofsted also confirmed that teaching across the school is outstanding because it is innovative, imaginative and inspires pupils to learn and expectations are very high and inspiring learning experiences support pupils to progress to a higher level. As headmaster of the school and a parent myself, I recognise that choosing a school for your child is one of the most important decisions that you will ever make. I would warmly encourage you to visit our school to see the high quality education we provide the children with and to experience our very special Catholic ethos. Please call Sarah or Anita in the school office to arrange a visit to the school and to collect an application pack. Telephone: or enquiries@st-tc.co.uk. Andrew Truby Headmaster Our Mission Statement At St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School we encourage, in all members of the community, a shared sense of awe and wonder as we grow closer to God. We foster creativity and inquiring minds, learning through collaboration and interdependence to become motivated lifelong learners. 22 Prices Achieved We are achieving amazing prices for clients and we want to do the same for you. Discover Redbrik s unique perspective and request a free valuation from an award-winning independent estate agency. SHEFFIELD: CHESTERFIELD: E: sales@redbrik.co.uk

23 First there was the office. Then the distinctive red, white and black sale boards started to appear across south and south-west Sheffield. Now the name Redbrik Estate Agency is well and truly established as a favourite for sellers and purchasers alike in Woodseats, Norton, Heeley, Bradway, Meersbrook as well as Millhouses, Totley, Dore, Bradway, Ecclesall, Fulwood, Crosspool and many other parts of the Hallam and Heeley areas. Nearly a year on from the launch of its contemporary Sheffield office in the former British Hairways salon at Abbeydale Road, Millhouses (next to the post office), Redbrik has returned some impressive figures that are making a real impression with house owners. Redbrik Millhouses in Numbers 10 months of trading. Accepted Offers: 118. Total no of viewings: 1,438. Viewings per property: 11. Total number of offers: 487. Offers per property: 3.7. The Redbrik team knows how to market a property for sale and get results an average of 11 viewings per property and, remarkably, an average of nearly four offers per property. At its core - an honest, jargon-free approach underpinned by great customer service and innovative marketing. Redbrik has broken new Mark Ross ground in the leafy suburbs of Sheffield, achieving phenomenal growth in a saturated market. Leading the team are founding directors Mark Ross and Julie Bulheller who launched Redbrik in Glumangate, in the heart of Chesterfield, two years ago. The pair, both experienced in the competitive world of estate agencies, had decided it was the right time to fill a gap in the market for an independent agency which had customer s needs at its heart rather than sales targets. The opening of a second office in Millhouses was almost inevitable. Mark, aged 34, was born and bred in Millhouses and attended Julie Bulheller Dobcroft and Silverdale Schools. He knows Millhouses and South West Sheffield like the back of his hand. Personally, it was dream come true for me to open a branch in Millhouses, said Mark. He and Julie have an impressive team. New director Michael Parry heads up Redbrik s Millhouses office, whilst well-known property figure Jed Furniss is now on board as a consultant, specialising in property sales in the south west of the city and the Peak District. Michael, whose extensive knowledge Jed Furniss of Sheffield is coupled with expertise gained from his time working at a leading London agency, is the key figure at Millhouses where he is supported by David Cooper and Louise Bolton. Mark, Julie and Michael have identified that, in the competitive market place, agents need to differentiate in ways that would benefit the customer. Michael said: We offer stunning lifestyle-inspired professional images of properties to complement clearly-written and designed marketing literature. This is backed up by a top class database software system, which allows us to utilise the information we hold to accurately match applicants to homes and, above all, a highly personalised level of service. The philosophy for Redbrik has always been a simple one: offer customers a fresh approach to selling their home through great marketing and dedicated customer service. Mark commented: Innovation is fundamental. The website ( for example, provides a fully responsive platform to beautifully showcase properties alongside unique features, such as photo plans, which aid and enhance the buying experience. We wanted our agency to offer customers an honest approach. We don t value to win instructions, we give sound marketing advice on how best to sell your home and we love nothing more than achieving the best possible price, especially if that means pushing the ceiling price or breaking new ground. Founding director Julie Bulheller said: Less than two years in, we are now setting the benchmark for the future of estate agency across Sheffield and North Derbyshire. And Redbrik can back it up with an impressive set of sales statistics. Just look at the story in South West Sheffield: 99 Hollinsend Road Asking Price: 120,000. Placed on market: 27/05/2014. 24 8 Jewels of Sheffield 8 Green spaces, historic buildings and lots of great places to eat, shop and see friends - we all know Sheffield 8 is a special place to live! However, can you choose a favourite bit of it? Active8 asked a number of local people to do just that for our annual guide issue and here's what they told us: Steve Rivers, Director of Unbeatable Energy African drumming company For me, it would have to be Chancet Woods. My profession involves a lot of exciting loud music and vibrant energy. Chancet Woods offers me that special place to rest and experience quiet solitude. Chancet Woods are an example of ancient woodland where the woods existed at least as far back as the 1600s and probably even before this date. This kind of habitat is the UK equivalent of rainforest it s irreplaceable and a really important for many rare and threatened species. Sheffield is unique as a city because it has such woodlands within its city boundaries. If you re lucky, you ll see special birds like woodpeckers, a nuthatch and maybe tree creepers, plus there is a rather magnificent resident tawny owl (or perhaps owls). Deborah Wain, Writer at Active8 I adore the panoramic view of Sheffield city centre from the top of Meersbrook Park. I never tire of looking at it and think I ve taken it in Beryl Heathcote, Norton Lees poet There s no doubt about it, my favourite place in Sheffield 8 is Bishops House. I spent many hours as a child playing around there as my poem explains. I gave a copy of the poem and the photograph to Bishops House. The photograph, taken around 1940, is of Daisy Harper, my schoolfriend, and her sisters Beryl and Marjorie. They lived on Welby Place, Meersbrook, and went to Meersbrook Bank School. Daisy worked as a nursery nurse in Meersbrook Park and married a park keeper. They emigrated to Australia around Now known as Eileen Welby, she lives in Victoria and we re still in touch. 24 Sisters Beryl, Daisy and Marjorie Harper, pictured outside Bishops House, in 1941 Where are your favourite places in the Sheffield 8 area? Active8 magazine would be delighted to hear from you. Active8 s Deborah Wain admires the view from Meersbrook Park during all weathers as I used to regularly walk my sister s dog there. When friends have visited from overseas, I ve always made time to share it. Because you access the elevated part via steep residential streets that tourists wouldn t normally find their way around, they think they ve been let in on a secret and 15th century Bishops House only adds to the wow factor. I m not sure if the view features on any Sheffield postcards but it ought to. Sometimes we fail to appreciate what s on our doorstep. If you live in S8 and have never visited, you really are missing out! The gem of Norton Lees Scary was the black stone head, standing by himself, With different shapes of pottery spread across the shelf. This was part of Bishops House in several decades past, Let's hope that some day, somewhere, we'll turn up proof at last. There are some worn old photographs, not sharp enough to see, I wish a clear one would turn up to prove it s not just me. Not just me remembering, those happy far off days, Joyful times near Bishops House in many different ways. Fishing in the nearby stream for shrimpies in a jar, Lads were making touch-burners to show how good they are. Yellow clay and water, they mix it near the stream, Then baking in the sun to burn and make a thin smoke screen. Back then all days seemed sunny, not a cloud in sight. Exploring West House Gardens once, we had a blooming fright. We saw a witch-like creature, my friend gasped "Oh dear no," So when it turned and looked our way, we thought it best to go. Many years have passed since then and here still stands our treasure, As generations come and go, may Bishops House give pleasure. Step inside and look around you're in a different time, Ghostly stories do abound, weird happenings, no crime! A photo from Australia displayed inside the hall, Beryl, Daisy, Marjorie, I now can name them all. All three they are sisters and Daisy my best friend, We stayed together right through school, yes to the very end. In answer to the question of "Who knows what date this was?" The day, well it was Sunday at Whitsuntide because, All were in their newest clothes, that was the custom then, The year was 1941 and Daisy nearly ten. We like to call the Bishops House The Gem of Norton Lees, It nestles just inside the park, midst avenues of trees, And now it is a museum, for all, so come and see, It won't cost you a penny, step into the past - it s free!

25 8 Linda Morewood, Club Secretary at Norton House Country Club My favourite corner of Sheffield 8 is Norton House Country Club. Many people don t realise that the big house across from St James Church has been a private members social club since 1945, making this year its 70th anniversary. Within the area bounded by the ring road, Meadowhead, Graves Park and the water tower, there is little else within walking distance, the only alternative options being pubs lying along or outside these perimeters. I particularly enjoy the special events such as the black tie dinner dances, our salmon n strawberry evening, etc, as well as our annual spring and autumn fayres, in addition to the regular goings-on through the year. To me, the club is not just a place to go to; its friendly sociable atmosphere makes it a pleasure to be a part of. Neil Anderson, Author and PR consultant I think my favourite part must be the eating opportunities along Woodseats. Restaurants, takeaways, coffee shops - the amount and variety has mushroomed in recent years. My favourite eating out destination must be the Kashmir which I frequent with my partner; Swanky Franks is perfect for the kids and Kito s is great for partner and kids. There's always consistency, quality service and a great time on offer. I must admit I still miss the Blue Room, but the Kashmiri Aroma has filled the gap and I rarely shy away from a good Indian. Swanky Frank s always puts a smile on the face of the kids and it's great for a family party. If it's a takeaway it's the Kolkata Indian or Poseidon chippy. Being totally honest, when we invited people to nominate their favourite corners of the Active8 patch, we did ban them from mentioning Graves Park. The trouble is, the park is probably most people s No 1 local attraction and we would have received so many similar answers! But here to keep everyone happy is a stunning image which shows that Graves Park really is an attraction for all seasons. This fabulous photograph was taken by Rose Bentley, of Norton Lees 25

Personally, my two favourite places in the Active8 area are Graves Park, because it s the go-to place when it s sunny, and the Beauchief Hotel, because it s a great place to relax and have a drink and a bite to eat with your family and/or friends. When I was younger, I d always get taken to Millhouses Park on hot days for a nice day out. Graves wasn t a park I d go to weekly; it was more one I would visit occasionally, like when there was a fair on, or some sort of event that was attendable for all ages. I used to love going to Millhouses when I was younger, but in the last few years the park has seriously improved, with new water attractions and the skate park is getting more and more popular! Millhouses even used to have a lido and a public paddling pool where many kids parents and grandparents will have had fun and have fond memories of! Power to the parks! N Sheffield 8 there are many places of public interest, such as Graves Park and Millhouses Park. The area also Both parks have cafes so they are definitely a place for the family to retire to for a nice lunch or snack when on a day out. I think Millhouses Park could be easily improved by adding something no other park has. It would need incredible funding, but maybe bringing in a drive-in movie screen would attract so many more people. I m sure it would be a popular idea and something so many people have never experienced! These days, I don t go down to the parks when they have summer activities on, so I can t really comment on the standard or amount of activities put on. However, I trust they are exceptional and a really good chance for young people to have a break from things and decide they want to meet new people and learn new sports and social skills. Regardless of my experiences with the parks, I think S8 is full of events and fun things to do for kids and adults throughout the summer and winter. 28 8 The hot spot for ten years No matter the time of year, there is always a heatwave at the friendly Flames of Sheffield showroom F LAMES of Sheffield have helped more than 3,200 customers with their fire, fireplace, stove and central heating needs since they first opened their doors in Now the weather has turned colder, we have seen the usual increase in the number of customers visiting the showroom, commented director Lee Day. Although the Autumn was a very busy time for us in terms of fires, fireplaces, stoves and central heating, the New Year is a great time to look at having any home improvements completed, especially as we have many great offers available in our Hot Winter Sale. There are great household savings to be made by installing an A rated energy efficient central heating boiler, with the average saving being of between per year. A solid fuel stove is also a great way to cut down on gas usage in many homes and, as long as the stove is DEFRA-approved and the correct fuel like seasoned/kiln dried timber or smokeless coal is used, then this again can be a great alternative to heat large areas of a home. Many of the solid fuel stoves being used in Sheffield and the surrounding areas have almost certainly not been installed by a qualified HETAS engineer, explained Senior Sales Advisor Sue Martin. This can lead to many problems and issues in terms of home insurance being invalidated, being incorrectly sealed and fumes leaking into the room(s) or building regulations visiting and insisting a stove is removed due to non-compliance. At Flames of Sheffield we offer a complete project managed service from start to finish for a customer and are happy to take responsibility for installing and certificating a solid fuel stove or fire/fireplace. Flames of Sheffield are able offer a different proposition to the majority of central heating installers. They operate from their Hillsborough Barracks bricks and mortar showroom, are open seven days a week, are not just a mobile number in a book or on the side of a van, plus they have their consumer credit licence and therefore offer a competitive finance facility. Flames are also an Accredited Installer for the entire Worcester-Bosch range of boilers and therefore offer up to an eight-year parts and labour guarantee and a ten-year guarantee on the Heat Exchanger to their customers. They install Combi, Conventional, System and replacement Back Boilers which they also back with a one-year guarantee on the quality of how it is installed to give their customers extra piece of mind. We at Flames of Sheffield, truly are a local, independent specialist fire, fireplace, stove and central heating specialist and run specially selected promotional offers during the year on a wide range of fires, fireplaces and stoves, added Senior Sales Advisor Helen Gowling. If a customer requires a high efficiency fire, a large amount of heat output or an electric fire with a unique flame picture, we are always able to meet their needs, plus we are able to offer long guarantees on many of these fires. Having firmly established themselves over the years as a local destination retailer for anyone looking for a special fire, fireplace, solid fuel stove or central heating boiler/system, they consistently offer customers a range of high quality products, value for money competitive pricing and a huge choice of bespoke ranges, whilst always maintaining their very highly rated standard of customer service. 29 8 Tenth year of Festival It s a whole decade since the idea of Woodseats Festival was born in the pages of Active8... and organisers are planning a bumper event for 2015 J ULY might seem a long way off, but plans are already well underway for this year s Woodseats Festival. And because the event will be celebrating its tenth anniversary, organisers are planning something extra special. There could be activities in addition to the main weekend attractions, plus a repeat of some of the most popular events over the last decade. All the details will be revealed in due course by the committee. The festival started out after Active8 called a meeting of interested parties at Woodseats Working Men s Club. Recalls editor Mike Firth: In our February 2006 magazine, we called for an event to showcase the wealth of talent in the area and we suggested Woodseats should run its own Festival. We called a meeting and were thrilled when around 50 people turned up to support the idea. As the organisation of the first Woodseats Festival didn t get underway until the Spring, the event was staged over three days in September - and it was blessed with glorious sunshine. There were events in church halls, school yards, pubs, restaurants, Graves Park, Woodseats Library and even a music show down the road at Abbeydale Picture House. Added Mike, who was the initial chair of the Festival Committee: It was a real celebration of what the Active8 area had to offer; we had birds of prey, art and craft displays, firemen, clairvoyants, a local history walk, belly dancers, classic cars, boxing, cycle training, martial arts, tapestries at Beauchief Abbey, the parade... even Daleks! It is a thrill to see the Festival celebrating its tenth year in Many people have worked very hard indeed to keep it going and I hope it enjoys a bumper celebration. Last year, more traders than ever got involved by decorating shop windows, hanging bunting and opening on Sunday for the parade from Chancet Wood group planned R ESIDENTS are being asked to get involved in plans to set up a friends group for the Chancet Wood playground in a bid to bring about improvements. Nicky Rivers, a mum-of-two, is keen to hear from anyone who wants to join her in the initiative which is being supported by the council s parks and countryside service. Nicky said: Some improvements were made a few years ago but there is potential for more natural features and new equipment. Clairvoyance Readings/Evenings bus card Party bookings catered for Contact Liza Tel: How the first Festival was announced in Active8 in April, 2006 Abbey Lane Primary to Woodseats Primary. The first Animals on the Lawn gathering, when local children could meet creatures from Heeley City Farm, was especially popular. Chair Janet Ibbotson said: The Festival has grown both in terms of those taking part and people supporting it and it demonstrates the strong sense of community in the area. We know that a lot of children look forward to the Festival - it s one of the events of the year for them. Janet, who became involved with the Festival three years ago when she retired from her job as medical records manager at Sheffield Children s Hospital, added that the weather had stayed dry each year which had helped bring the crowds out. The programme is brought together by a group of six people who meet at least once a month the Abbey pub and more volunteers are always needed. At the end of 2014, the Festival staged its first Christmas Craft and Vintage Fair at Woodseats Methodist Church, which was a huge success and is due to be repeated. The 2015 Festival will take place over the weekend of 12th to 14th July, but may be extended. Businesses are being asked to get involved by running a competition or becoming a sponsor. Anyone interested in getting involved should info@woodseatsfestival.org.uk or ring treasurer Angela Greenwood on Although the playground is tucked away and some people don t know it s there, it s used by local children. I ve spoken to some parents already who are interested in getting involved in making the facilities a bit better. Once a Friends of Chancet Wood Playground group has been established, the aim is to apply for funding for improvements. Initial additions would possibly be climbing equipment and some goalposts. Anyone interested should contact Nicky on or her at nrivers100@gmail.com 29

The company was set up in 2009 by Bunmi Scott after she suffered a long stretch of illness which she eventually discovered was due to food allergies. A mum-of-two from a family of medics, she s recently returned to Sheffield where she hails from, to run her enterprise from here. Bunmi said hundreds of people undergo tests through Foods You Can each month. Many have changed their diets with dramatic improvements to their health Food can heal but it can also make you feel horrible. I understand the frustrations. Our focus is on helping people to feel better, she commented. On the testing side, we can help pinpoint what food is causing problems so it can be eliminated. For example, a client might have stopped eating bread completely when it s just yeast that they should avoid. The business offers simple skin-prick blood tests, either in-person or through at-home kits, which can assess reactions to up to 150 different food stuffs. These cost from 55. 31 Therapy for all at Active Physiotherapy AKE 2015 a year to remember by improving your health M- that s the message from the specialist team at Activ Physiotherapy. Keeping up with New Year s resolutions can put a strain on your body and may lead to unexpected injuries and pain. Therapists Andrew Okwera, Georgina Hollinrake, Clare Heward and the team at Activ Physiotherapy have a wealth of experience and knowledge on how to manage, manipulate and eliminate such problems. They specialise in several areas of physiotherapy including sports injuries, women s health, musculoskeletal pain and home advice on improving your health. Andrew said: We commonly see people who have taken up new hobbies as a spur to improve health such as long gym sessions and long distance running. However, in my experience regular exercise without the proper preparation can lead to injuries that otherwise wouldn t occur. We have a system of preventative rehabilitation, or prehab as it s commonly known, that can help prepare a person for exercise and also aid their recovery, thus reducing the risk of an injury. Andrew added: Most people may think this type of therapy is only available to professional sports people, however here at Activ we ensure that it is widely available for all. 32 8 Folk living at Meadowhead are angry over a proposal to allow younger people to live on their 60-plus age restriction estate. Deborah Wain reports HE majority of residents on a local estate have signed a petition calling for the council to scrap its plans to remove the over-60 age restriction on their council flats. People living in properties on the Painted Fabrics estate, at Meadowhead, were first aware of the move when they received letters from Sheffield City Council. More than 60 householders turned up to air their concerns at a drop in session organised by the authority. Meanwhile, Heeley MP Meg Munn has met Coun Harry Harpham, Cabinet Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods, over the issue. The proposals are due to be discussed with the Local Area Housing Forum this month as part of the council s consultation process. A decision will then be made. Lynda Freeman, who helped organise the petition, said that residents in all but a handful of the 90 properties on the estate had signed. She said people feared the area would be spoiled if younger tenants moved in. 32 ISHOPS House, at Norton Lees, will host a talk by Robin Fielder entitled 'The World of Harry Brearley: Growing Up in Working Class Victorian Sheffield' on 20th February, at 7.30pm. Better known as the inventor of stainless steel, Harry Brearley s autobiography provides some of the best descriptions we have of what life was like in Victorian times for the workers of Sheffield. Entry is free, but arrive early to be sure of getting a place. Title joy for James LOCAL schoolboy has raced his way to further success in cycle speedway. James Bunting (left), aged 14, of Norton, and a pupil at Meadowhead School, won the under-13s title at the British 2014 championships in Coventry. His win gave him his first British white jersey. James also finished fourth in the under-16s event, beating some formidable riders. The schoolboy has already notched up a string of other wins in the sport, including the under-12s title. In addition to cycle speedway, James takes part in road and velodrome racing. Painted Fabrics protest T Brearley event B 1,000 raised T HEY tripped the light fantastic and danced the night away, raising 1,000 for St Luke s Hospice. An evening of music and movement at Woodseats Workingmen s Club, organised by city dance group Easy Dance members Heather Stanton and Ivy Strong, gave a major cash boost to Sheffield s only hospice. This was a fantastic result and one that will mean so much for our patients and their families, said St Luke s community fundraising assistant Grace Brierley. A Many of the people here are in their 80s and 90s and have lived here since their homes were built and feel quite strongly about this. Why change a beautiful estate? The proposals only relate to blocks on the site which contain two bedroom flats. Coun Harpham, said: The demand for council housing has changed over time and we need to make sure that the availability of homes reflects this. It s really important to me that we help meet the rising demands for affordable housing in Sheffield. The biggest increase is from families and younger people and the welfare benefit changes, unemployment, rising private rents and house prices have all had an impact on this. Said Meg Munn: I have met Coun Harpham and senior housing officers to discuss the importance of maintaining the sense of community quiet of the Painted Fabrics Estate. The council is introducing a new policy of local housing officers in every area to ensure all tenants respect their properties and the environment. This should ensure any developing problems are quickly tackled. The change in age designation will mean fewer properties remain empty for long periods. I am reassured that this approach will ensure that the existing residents can continue to enjoy this lovely estate in peace and quiet. The estate is located on the site of the former Painted Fabrics Ltd, which provided work for servicemen who lost limbs and suffered other injuries during the First World War. It s good to talk A LONG-established amateur radio club which has its base in Sheffield 8 has put out a call for new members. Sheffield Amateur Radio Club has been up and running since 1920 and meets each Monday night at the Sheffield Transport Sports Club, at Meadowhead. Members also take their demonstration trailer, presented to them by the Radio Society of Great Britain after a competition with other clubs, on the road to local events. The technology used today includes analogue and digital systems and members communicate with other enthusiasts all round the world. They even chat to astronauts aboard the International Space Station! Committee member John Hinton said the club has a strong social side and offers a range of interest to hobbyists including competitions and radio set-building. He said: For anyone interested in obtaining their amateur radio licence, our club will take you through all you need to know to get started. Our training is free at all levels of the licence and we have a fully equipped radio shack and training room at the clubhouse. The club currently has a membership of up to 40 men and women but committee members would love to see more people get involved. John added: You make friends around the world. Warm wishes were exchanged over Christmas with people in Australia and other countries far away. Some members have even visited each other after making contact through the radio. In addition, amateur radio has a serious side and has been used to support emergency services during major incidents. For more information about the club or to join, visit its website or ring John on

34 8 Artist s impression of how the new sports complex will look The future of sport 2015 will see an exciting new sporting complex begin to take shape here in Sheffield 8. Deborah Wain looks at what s planed for the Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre site B UILDING work is set to begin within weeks on a new 16million state-of-the-art leisure centre planned for the Norton site of the current Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre. The development will include a six-lane 25m replacement for the existing swimming pool, a separate learner pool, a major new fitness suite and studios, two additional indoor tennis courts and the city s first dedicated gymnastics and trampolining centre. The venue will also be the city headquarters for the new National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine a 2012 Olympic Legacy project funded by the Department of Health with extensive provision for health consultation, specialist treatment services and research facilities. Funding for the scheme, along with a new 7million centre at High Green, will come from bodies including Sheffield City Council, the NCSEM, the Lawn Tennis Association, and British Gymnastics. Coun Isobel Bowler, Sheffield City Council s Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said there were plans for further 34 Chris Goddard development of outdoor sport and leisure facilities at both sites and these will be confirmed in the coming months. She commented: The Graves Centre will not only dramatically improve the quality of leisure and sport infrastructure for local residents, but will also draw people from across the city and beyond to use the specialist gymnastics, trampolining, tennis and innovative health facilities. This is the biggest investment in sport and leisure in Sheffield in a generation and we are grateful to our funding partners who are supporting the building costs. The Graves Centre has been operated by Sheffield City Trust since Places for People Leisure, which operates more than 100 leisure centres across the country, will run both developments on behalf of the council after winning a ten-year contract. The company will operate Graves from April during the redevelopment phase and then manage the new facilities from the opening in early Staff at Graves will transfer to the new venue with additional job opportunities into 2016 and beyond. Tim Hewett, Business Development Director for Places for People Leisure said: We are very proud to be the council s chosen leisure partner to operate these exciting new facilities for the next ten years, which will undoubtedly encourage greater participation from all sections of the community to become more active and healthy. Hats off to knitter Chris W OODSEATS Chris Goddard has put her passions for knitting and sharing a yarn or two with friends to good use. Over the last few years, Chris has helped raise thousands of pounds for charities by creating all manner of knitted and crocheted items. Not a day goes by without Chris, a former bank secretary, setting to work with her needles and wool. She s a member of five knitting circles, including the Knit and Natter group at Martha s café, in Greenhill. Her latest project is knitting hats based on the Minions characters from the film Despicable Me. Buyers have been ordering them for people of all ages, from newborns to adults, and in a variety of colours. The total number of hats Chris has completed is now approaching 200. The head-warmers have ended up as far afield as Ireland and Cyprus! Chris was taught to knit, aged five, by her mum, Arline Timm, of Meersbrook, who was also a prolific and accomplished knitter. Chris started her charity efforts six years ago after Arline died. She said: We have people of ages in the groups I m involved in and it s a very social thing. You re learning all the time, too. Even when Chris isn t running or attending a group, she can be found, needles clicking, in the Woodseats Palace, working on more projects. Anyone who would like to join the Greenhill group should call in at Martha s, in Westwick Crescent, on Mondays between 1.30pm and 3.30pm, when it meets. Donations of wool would also be appreciated. Messages can be left at Martha s, telephone

36 8 If no-one ever includes Woodseats on their maps of Sheffield, does it really matter how the place came by its unusual name? It most certainly does to Active8 columnist Dafyd Manton I AM not a betting man, if only because I don't believe that the horse/dog knows how hard I have to work for my crust, so is therefore unlikely to put on an extra spurt just to please me and allow me to eat venison instead of Spam. As for betting on football matches, and given the shenanigans of the past World Cup (cheating, match fixing, bribery, players attempting to eat each other, Brazil going down 7-0,) it would take a person of remarkable fortitude (i.e. daftness) to walk into the betting shop and put a few quid on anyone. These days, if somebody told me that a Mixed Infants XI had beaten certain national teams, I wouldn't be that shocked. Sorry, where were we? Oh yes, betting, I remember. I'm quite prepared to wager a magnum of the finest Fruit and Nut that almost every family with roots in Woodseats will have a much-recounted tale of Auntie Flo who let various trams go past because they had Woodseats on the front, and she wanted something with padded seats. If it wasn't Auntie Flo it was Auntie Dot, I forget which. So, the obvious question, why is it called Woodseats? Why not Park Benches? Is it anything to do with furniture, tree-based or not, or is it all mythology? Well, I have the answer. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin. Once upon a time, when the world was very young, and before anybody had such brilliant ideas as Unpopular Centres for Music, trams, sports stadia that cost an arm and a leg, blocks of flats allied thereto and a million other ideas that left everybody gasping with the sheer insanity of the world, there was a little wood, just to the south of Sheffield, on a road known locally as the A LXI to Cestrefeld. This lovely little wood was in a county known as Darbieshyre, and was almost inevitably popular with young couples, highwaymen, outlaws who robbed the rich to give to the poor, goblins, elves, leprechauns or their English equivalent, tree-huggers (nothing is new) and arboriculturists of all shapes and sizes. There were no houses, because if you wish to remain incognito prior to leaping on somebody and relieving them of their coin-purse, being identified as That Bloke From Number 8, The Wooded Bit, Nr. Sheffylde is unwise. Tree huggers tend not to want people to know, either. To illustrate, extensive and inexhaustive research has shown that one person in every six hugs trees at least three times a week, but I bet (to coin a phrase) that you can't name them. I rest my case. So should we jump to the conclusion that the wood, whilst not exactly a housing estate, contained a vast quantity of seats? Hardly. If you build a seat, eventually the Sheriff's Men are going twig, and you'll be sat there one evening, ruminatively a-smoking of your clay pipe and chatting idly about the day's transactions (Rich Men 0, Poor Men 4) when The Authorities will descend on you and set about you with large lumps of wood, which, if you look carefully, can be found in abundance of the floor of said wood. 36 There is a case for the elves, goblins et al to have seats, but this would be difficult to spot, since of necessity they would be slightly smaller than anything you or I might require. I understand that elves rarely grow above 1ft 7in ( cm, if they'd had centimetres in those days before Woodseats became a major bus route, which they hadn't.) Seats would rarely need to be more than about 8in high, and thus are not only difficult to spot but are also a trip-hazard for the Sheriff's Men and thus forbidden by By-Law 134/21/8.c of 1426 (revised 1717). What happened, dear reader, and assuming that you are still with me and haven't, shrieking, hidden your face in your pinny and sat rocking back and forth amongst the breakfast things, is much, much simpler. To demonstrate: Let us hie our merry way to Rotherham. To Woodsetts, which was first recorded in a quitclaim (no, nor do I) dated Does Woodseats exist? 1220, and spelled Wudsetes. Any clearer? No? Oh. Well, the name Woodseats, Woodsetts, Wudsetes, or, as it happens, Wodesettes, refers to a fold in a wood. Think about it. As you drive down Meadowhead, and I promise you that you will have plenty of time to look around as you queue at the traffic lights at Abbey Lane (named after an Abbey, not the pub but the religious building put up by a bunch of monks who wouldn't have been seen dead in the boozer) you will notice that where Meadowhead becomes Woodseats, the land flattens out, or, in the parlance of the average medieval monk, folds. For that reason, and that reason alone, we get Woodseats. But, and this is a pretty major but, you can look at maps for as long as you like yet you will never find the name Woodseats. Norton Woodseats, perhaps, although it is way over in the badlands towards Hemsworth. No Woodseats. Bolehill, Meadowhead, Norton Lees if you really stretch a point ( N and W, since you ask), but nada y nada y nada Woodseats. Let us take a short break. Now that you've had a few minutes to get over the shock, maybe had another brew and a slice of toast with marmalade, let us consider the ramifications of the aforegoing. Woodseats does not exist. That in itself is a tragedy. But, if, for example you are pulled up by either the Sheriff's Men or the Old Bill, once you've given 'em your moniker they are bound to ask you where you are from. Great. Well, officer, I'm from Woodseats! Short hiatus whilst copper gets back in to blue-flashing chariot and checks computer. No such place. Therefore no such person. Ergo Sum you are a vagrant. Mind yer fingers, son. Slam!, as of cell door shutting. But, all is not lost. We at Active8 take our responsibilities seriously. From this month, this magazine is to be made available at every nick in the county. Aren't we kind to you?
